I purchased NWN2 a while ago, but liked NWN1 so much that I only recently installed NWN2.  I now notice that all NWN2 save files by force gets installed in the My Documents folder on the boot partition.  Other mods, music, haks etc also must be in the My Documents folder.

This installation location is useless with my system configuration (WinXP), which is with a small boot partition with only system files and system utilities - games, pictures and various other documents elsewhere.  This system can easily be imaged, saved on DVD and restored in about 2 minutes, and is in my opinion (and many others) far superior to the standard MS type setup with everything piled in the c: drive.

Bioware / Obsidian should could easily have provided an option for an alternate location in the installation program - shame on the programmers for forcing something on you that easily could have been avoided.  And what was wrong with using the program directory like NWN1.

To do a mean and lean image of my boot partition my only option now is to backup the MyDocuments\\...\\NWN2 stuff on another partition or HD, delete the MyDocument stuff, image the drive and then restore the NWN2 saves.  Unnecessary and a major pain.

Yeah... I am an oldtimer, who likes D&D and having choices when I install something.  Obviously my question on this forum is if anybody knows of a relatively simple way of changing the default save and mod/hak/music to other than the My Documents folder.

Thanx a lot

Your frustration is understandable. I tend to dislike saving things within Windows-specific directories (i.e. my documents are *not* saved within Users\\Docs & Settings\\My Docs) since you never know when you'll need to change something about your OS. I agree that there should be an option to set which location this uses.

However, moving any and all custom content outside of the installation directory was, IMO, a very smart decision. I firmly believe that having to override content within the installation directory is just inviting people to have problems.

I think they were forced to do this for compatibility reasons. I don't remember what it was anymore.

Regardless, you can relocate your "My Documents" folder to any partition you want. It doesn't have to reside on your boot partition, although it does by default. I moved mine a long time ago. :)

Simply right click on "My Documents" and change the target partition.

You can also poke at the ini files in your install folder, and set all the folders whereever you want.

Even better you also can use the -Home parameter with a short cut to put the folder wherever as well. This way you can have multiple sets of content just based on a particular shortcut being used.

If your user folder is so full, you really should relocate it though. That is where all your files should go in XP. But you have choices, far more choices actually now than before.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that locating saves in My Documents was a requirement for Windows Live. If the game makers want that logo on their produce, they have to put the saves there.

They didn't need to provide for an option because, as Cipher pointed out, Microsoft provided the option of moving your My Documents folder anywhere you want it to be. It's a very easy thing to do, just right click, select the option and tell Windows where you want it moved to.

And what was wrong with using the program directory like NWN1.

Using My Documents is far better than having to dig through your game folder looking for your saves. I have a number of my games putting thieir saves there, so everything is in one handy location rather than scattered around my hard drive.
