I was thinking today, how of all my teammates, Jacob gets the least action. Well, that's cause he's Jack, only crappier.

Why not Ggive Jacob Assaulty rifles? He would be awesome, and  he'd get the action he deserves.

Jacob is cool.

Jacob was practically a sentinel with assault rifles in his spin-off game. Why they decided to give Miranda sentinel abilities and give Jacob a bunch of crappy skills is beyond me.

It really seems like Bioware was trying to get as many people to hate the poor guy as possible.

He definitely would've served better with having an Assault Rifle instead of a pistol and a defensive stripping ability. Really, He should've had overload instead of Miranda. That would made it a lot more balanced because Miranda is almost overly ridiculously good squadmate.

I think they made Jacob 'underpowered' because he's the first squad mate you can have with you in the early part of the game, and they didn't want him to outshine Shepard in the early part of the game. I also think that's why Miranda has squad-improving abilities. If someone like Garrus or Samara was your first companion, Shepard could almost sit back and let them do the fighting. I know when I take Reave as a bonus power, I can breeze through the early parts of the game almost without firing a shot.

That said, I think Jacob gets the short end of the stick. You'd be a fool to bring him along after recruiting Zaeed or Kasumi, or even Mordin. Only Jack comes close to Jacob's lack of effectiveness in combat, from what I've seen.

I hope that BioWare gives Jacob an overhaul for ME3, assuming, of course, that ME2 squadmates are recruitable in ME3. Give him some swagger, and some depth, and especially some common sense.

Although I do also not particularly love Jacob, he gave me a few surprises. He can pretty well use his pull+shotgun. If you strip defenses, let Jacob pull, he will pretty much oneshot the poor guys he pulled. His incendiary ammo does also make him a useful companion early on, especially in the early encounters with the Blood Pack.

He's not that bad, he is just - as pointed out above - tailor made for the early missions of the game.

He has an assault rifle. ALl you gota do is mod the file :P.

Makes his incendiary ammo (inferno in mine) very effective. Although that damn bug of spamming his barrier all the time leaves alot of room for work.

I would agree, if it was not for Miranda, you also get her at the start and she is one of the best, if not the best squadmate in the game because of her powers and class skill. I think they just wanted people to hate him.

I always wondered why an ex-marine can't use an assualt rifle.

I wondered why they made both Jacob and Miranda biotics, yet only really sell Miranda as a biotic.

The only mention of his biotic ability is right at the start.

They should have made Miranda the biotic, and then made Jacob have tech/ammo/combat powers, would fit better with his background.

Jacob would be better if you could equip him with a personality.

Incendiary Ammo is helpful, as is Pull, but it's true that Jacob is a substandard squad mate. Is he as bad as, say, Morinth? No, but he's close.

Isn't Jacob Vanguard?

He said Jacob was practically a Sentinel in his spin-off game.
In it he had biotic and tech attacks. It gave the impression of a very efficient operative.

ME2 never uses the term vanguard in describing him, it's just the clearest connote; in the case of Jack, the game uses  the terms Vanguard and Adept in describing her.
