Okay, we've all seen the vision from the Prothean beacon a dozen times.  I've seen it maybe, hm, forty times, since it's unskippable each time you see it.  But what is it really showing?  Dialogue in the game says that it's a distress beacon warning other Prothans about the Reapers, but aside from the brief shot at the end, it doesn't seem to show any Reapers.  It mostly shows a bunch of weird organic horrors.  Most of it looks like brief shots from surgical scenes where cyborgs are being made or something.  There's two shots which look like Protheans being bombarded from orbit, maybe, but other than that ...

I never understood the close-up on the sharp-toothed animal. I know the suns/planets at the end indicate a cycle, and there visions of dead Protheans, but a lot of the stuff doesn't make much sense. I don't think we're really supposed to understand it much by design.

The greatest problem I had when trying to comprehend the vision, was to determine what each scene actually was before I was thrust into the next one.



Something that might help, and I haven't tried, is opening the video files with Bink Video player. It's been a while since I used it, but there might be a slow playback option on it.



Back to the vision... something I don't get, is the Collector showing up in the vision on ME2. I doubt Vigil and the surviving Prothean scientists could have acquired that kind of information. What do you think?

May be... because as I remember there is a vision in ME2 where you can clearly see the collectors.

I made the topic.  It's in the Mass Effect 1 spoiler forum and I put a Mass Effect 1 spoiler in it, the way it's supposed to be.  He threw a Mass Effect 2 spoiler in the Mass Effect 1 spoiler forum.  That's against the rules and, regardless, extremely inconsiderate, rude, and damaging.

I could murder people who post spoilers in inappropriate places; once seen, they cannot be unseen.  It can completely ruin a very interesting and unique plot experience.  Spoilers are for life.  You can never get that back.  Die in a fire.

I assume it's meant to be confusing; that's the whole point of it. It's not some Prothean sitting in a comfortable chair, smoking a pipe and calmly explaining the finer points of the Mass Effect backstory, it's a nightmarish vision forced into Shepard's uncomprehending mind.

To quote the game "Without the Cipher, the images in the beacon's vision don't make sense to non-Protheans who lack the necessary attitudes, mindset, and cultural experience to correctly interpret them. Describing the Cipher is impossible; it would be like trying to explain colour to a creature without eyes."

That said, it's still meant to imply certain things to the player, so I'd say the machine things seem to represent the Reapers, the space bits presumably depict Ilos - it's been a while, but isn't that how they figure out to go to Ilos? - or if not that, a very significant planet in ME3, and I just took the bestial jaw to show danger; just a general thing to put in to make it scary or weird. Kind of like the video in The Ring. So personally I feel it's mainly trying to be weird and freaky above all, with just general references thrown in rather than every single thing being a very specific reference to a single thing.

On topic: Since Protheans were capable of transfering information derectly to the mind we have to assume that there were additional data in those messages in non visual format (so we can't see them and only Shepard can feel them).

How the Hell does the game being out for a year make your spoilers not spoilers? The game could be out for a century and it would still be a spoiler. And how the Hell was I supposed to know the vision in the first game had anything to do with the Collectors from the second game, since I've never had the opportunity to play the second game? No, I wasn't "fishing for spoilers;" everything I said had to do with Mass Effect 1, to the best of the knowledge available to me without having played the second game. A group of people who'd never played Mass Effect 2, or a group of people considerate enough not to spoil Mass Effect 2 for the people who'd never played it, could have had a perfectly good discussion on the topic with no unwarranted Mass Effect 2 spoilers. That's what this forum is supposed to be for.

As for "personal attacks," mine were quite warranted. Spoiling a game for someone is a lot worse than a few hot words, which makes his offense far worse than mine.   Moreover, I did no wrong to deserve the offense he gave, while he did wrong to deserve the one he received.

I shouldn't waste my time throwing jewelry to pigs, but here goes: a story can only be discovered once. After that, you're just trying to relive the original experience, but failing to go through the same magic. A mystery, once solved, is no longer a mystery. Much of the joy of a story's first hearing is the unknown, and the revelation of the unknown.

A spoiler is robbing the spoilee of that unique revelation within the immersed context. (It's the emotional-intellectual equivalent of someone else having sex with your virgin bride in front of you on your wedding night.) You can never get that moment back; it permanently affects the way your perceive the story and the events of it, and not for the positive. It takes the mystery away without allowing the story to do it for you.

Again, I fully realize that I'm wasting my time. If you don't truly value stories, nothing I can say will enable to you to understand the eternal loss caused by having the experience stolen from you by a spoiler. And if you are a sociopath, then even if you do value stories, there is little reason for you to refrain from robbing others of their wonder by permanently damaging their experience of the fiction.

Spoiling... it's bad m-key.

It really sucks that a plot point was spoiled. I'd have reacted the same way as you did Echo.

But if I had made this topic, I'd have put a "I haven't played Mass Effect 2 yet"-disclaimer at the end of the original post. So the one who actually commited the spoiling would have likelier responded with "it might be explained in ME2".

Thanks for the advice, BinaryHelix101. I'll do that in the future; even though I shouldn't have to, it's a good idea to avoid reliance on other people being considerate and following the forum rule.
