Here recently, my Steam copy of Mass Effect 1 has started lagging to the point where I simply cannot play it. This problem didn't occur before I installed Mass Effect 2 (which has no lag whatsoever, for the record). I've found several other forum posts that indicate the problem as a "PDVDServ.exe" in the processes tab of the task manager. Unfortunately, that is not my problem, as I don't have a program like that and have already searched for it and found nothing. I've retuned my settings several different times now, and nothing seems to work.
Lag makes the game unplayable.

Only a multi-user game can actually have computer "lag". It can run slowly, of course, and so can a single- player game. The word has different meanings for modern computer playing, and has been used to describe the time between keyboard input and onscreen reaction when the command must be transmitted over a network. Another tern in use is "latency".
Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)
Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista
Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD
Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1800 GTO (X1300, X1300 Pro, X1550, HD 2400, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4350, HD 4550, and HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)
Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes
Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers
A failure to make allowance for the requirements above is a likely source for slowness.

English_Paladin, my advice is to verify the integrity of the game cache. If you're unsure how to, then load Steam, go to Library, find Mass Effect, right click > Properties, Local Files, and then it's the "Verify Integrity" button. If it lags after, make sure your drivers are up to date. I would ask you to remove ME2, but if it's a Steam copy then it's quite a large download.

Ah, it seems to've fixed itself after a couple of hours of gameplay. Rather odd, but it's fixed nonetheless. And, heh - thanks for helping. If something like this occurs again and if it doesn't fix itself, I'll be sure to come back here.
