Hi. I need help with this guy. I know there's tons of stuff out there on how to beat him already but Bioware message board seems to be down (it takes forever to load or just refuses to load) and literally everything I've read about how to beat him fails.

My party is a level 8 fighter, Minsc, Branwen, Dynaheir, Coran and Imoen. I understand you must take out all the priests first, but while I'm doing that and trying to keep from being chopped up by him his death gaze is killing everyone. By the time I kill all the priests there's no one left to fight. I've tried potion of mirror gaze but it doesn't last long enough. Everything else he throws at me I can cope with. I use potions of free action, and if Dynaheir gets silenced I reload. It's just that death gaze that's doing it.

I've read you just use Otilukes Resiliant Shere on him to keep him contained until you take out all the priests... doesn't work (even preceeded by Greater Malision). I've read to stun him with Chromatic Orb... doesn't work. I've tried the Cloud Kill maneuver... he dies instantly but spawns from all the priests so when I come back down stairs the cloud has gone and there's six of them waiting for me.

The only time I came close to getting him was when I tried the cloud kill maneuver and ran upstairs and he followed me, but even with him just on his own and I threw everything I had at him he still got me before I could finish him. The death gaze again. Subsequent attempts he failed to follow me.

So if anyone can help that would be great. I've just spent literally four hours trying. I'm prepared to give it one or two more attempts then I'm quitting. I just don't find this fun.

Thanks very much.

Kill the cultists faster. Potions of Explosions, Necklaces of Missiles etc are good for wiping them out.

There should also be enough Potions of Mirrored Eyes in the game for everyone to be able to drink two or three of them.

I think the Ace Letec has magical resistance, so you'll need to lower his resistance first; with the spell lower resistance (a 5th level mage spell, I think?) I usually have Imoen hide in shadows, then take out one or two priests by the door (I think), then have her run away (put boots of speed on her). I always use Otilukes' Resilient Sphere on the Ace Letec. As for the guys in the cellar, try interrupting their spellcasting first.

As for the Death Gaze, immediately use Dispel Magic on them, (if mirrored eyes potion run out). As for the cultists, summomed creatures can be used to keep the demon occupied a bit. You can also throw a few web spells, followed by a few fireballs spells at them. And try to kill Tracea first, use magic missiles, and arrows to take her spells out. Have Imoen hide in shadows, and stab her for much damage.

Edit: I play vanilla version and I was wondering whether tutu makes the enemies to follow you to another level like in bg2. If so my hint is not really working.

I struggled with this greatly until I started running my injured partymembers upstairs to heal. Before I realised this I got slaughtered more or less million times (I used to have more than 3 strands of hair on my head before that day..). This may be obvious but it certainly took a long time for me to realise - and as the cultists are not regenerating or anything gives you time to strategic attacks at them. Basically had the mr demon only to worry about. Some to attract the demon's attention and archers and mages attacking the cultists (fireball works well as well as wand of fire and arrows of detonation - few of them and you get three down at once) and when your health is getting low run upstairs to heal. A bit sad plan of action but it worked for me.

Thanks. I did the retreat upstairs to heal strategy as well as the other suggestions, using Dispel Magic ect. I had to retreat twice, and once I had to rest. When I came down (I'd finished off everyone else by then) I was dismayed to see he was at full health again. I was just about to quit but I thought I may as well give it one last go and he went down easy. I have no idea why.

Oh well. Thanks everyone.

I like to go down the basement with a stealthed character that is a good archer (preferrably a Ranger or Fighter/Thief. Imoen can do it, but she needs to bring plenty of arrows!), move to one of the back corners and take out all the cultists before Tracea Carol sees a character and summons the demon. That way, I only need to kill Tracea, then the demon.

I found the easiest way to beat him is to reload until he gets himself with his mass hold spell. :)

I killed him once, that was enough for me

The fight is pure sadism from the developer's part, at such low level. Only time I beat him I got lucky with a 'hold monster' spell after 20 reloads.

I found summoned skeletons are the best thing to soak up his death gazes. Dispel magic is needed for a back-up, though (you just have to deal with the fact it strips your buffs). Once the cultists are dead you can turn you attention to Aec'Latec. That said, I did leave and return after killing the cultists when I did it. I haven't tried again since.

Or you can just drink a Potion of Mirrored Eyes for full protection for 1 turn :P
There are 10 such potions available in stores alone.

I don't know if this is a glitch or what, but when I'd killed all cultists after having Aec'Letec distracted with summons, one cloudkill (I think it was cloudkill) insta-killed him. I felt a bit dirty ...

No, the above strategy is not a glitch. Sometimes you just get have all the luck - and things like this happens.

Cloudkill pretty much always instantly kills Aec. It's a common cheesy strategy :) I used to do it a lot in my early days.

I actually reloaded and did it all again because I thought the game cheesed for me. Turns out I'm an idiot.

Another possible glitch question: Are the rest of the priests (other than the one that talks to you) supposed to do something? When I played through that bit, they just stood there and did nothing. Didn't run away, didn't cast spells, didn't fight back. It seemed a bit wrong for the fight to be really hard if AecLetec doesn't paralyse himself but completely trivial if he does.

They are only there to provide 'rebirth fodder' for the demon.

There is a component of the SCS mod that makes them fight back. Only in melee, though (they will not move across the floor), which doesn´t impact my 'stealth sniper' method one bit...

The method used by jiansonz is the one that I usually use, but it can be a cleric who has used sanctuary, a mage who has used invisibility, a fighter who has used a potion of invisibility, a ranger or thief who has used stealth. When the priests are dead, then is the time to use a mage with cloudkill. Very cheesy, very easy.

However before using cloudkill, it is necessary to speak with the leader of the cult. Otherwise you kill them all and it is impossible to finish the quest and get the reward.

A very minor bug in the game, but annoying.

I used a bunch of arrows of detonation and wand of fireballs to kill the cultists in back and damage the demon, while fighters killed front line of cultists. Then lots of summons and just gang up on the demon and watch health.

BUT - Kivan (Elf Ranger) got caught by Demon Gaze and I can't recover him any way

Hello.

An amature`s advice: though this "guy" is somewhat magic-resistant (if you dont count cloud-insta-kill), i`ve managed to disable him with 4 web spells + Minsc with "free action".

Everybody in the party should have the ability to throw a fireball, via necklaces of missiles, potions of explosions, or err...casting fireball. 6 of those will wipe out most if not all of the cultists, then tank up one of your fighters, and go thump the demon. Prep 3-4 dispel magics to protect against the death gaze (use but do not rely on mirror eyes, you get dispelled a lot).

What is that magic that first acts like a normal Hold spell, but after a long period suddenly chunks the Held char and replaces them with a ghast? That happened twice in my last fight with Aec'Letec (to the same char).

Those are two different effects. One's the aura of paralysis and the other's the Death Gaze.
