After being gazed the "dying" icon appears, a white squiggle. Use dispel magic (or shoot the affected character with arrows of dispelling) to avoid the transformation. I think Grael in Durlags Tower mentions something about it.

I solo this with a mage everytime I play through Baldur's Gate.

I like to travel under the effects of Haste and Invisibility, so that I am able to bypass unnecessary fights, as they are annoying. If you walk into the room invisible, you do not trigger the conversation that summons Aec'Letec. This gives you the opportunity to walk out of the visual range of the cultist NPC that normally talks to you when you enter the room.
Interesting note - the cult guards will not attack you even though they can see you, only the one that triggers the conversation will, and she is much easier to kill than the cult guards.
I throw Fire Balls and Lightning Bolts to kill the cult guards being careful to remain outside the visual range of the NPC. Once they are all dead, initiate the conversation, and Aec'Letec will appear with no cult guards to intimidate you.
In fact, the only reason the cult guards are there in the first place is because even if you kill Aec'Letec without killing the cult guards first, he respawns out of the body of any cult guard still standing.
I can use a potion of Mirror Eyes to save time preparing for Death Gaze, but I'm speculating you could also use 2nd level Protection from Petrification to protect yourself from Death Gaze, since Protection from Petrification gives you Gaze Reflection, but I have never tried it, so I do not know.
I have Blur, Mirror Image, Protection from Evil, and Vocalize cast on myself going in to absorb as many hits as I can, and keep myself able to cast Mirror Image as he does silence you. You don't need a potion of Mirror Eyes as long as you succeed the save versus Death Gaze, which is why I use Blur and Protection from Evil - the bonus to saving throws.
Finally, Cloudkill kills both the NPC and Aec'Letec instantly when his Magic Resistance fails him. Basiclly it's wandering around inside the Cloudkill until it does its work, biding time and absorbing hits with any form of protection you want. Sometimes I cast 4th level Greater Malison to speed up the process, but it's not necessary.
Happy 16000 experience points, though I am always maxed on experience points far before this point.

I take on this SOB every time I play through BG1. Basically it comes down to knowing you need potions of mirrored eyes and/or protection from petrification spells, scrolls, whatever. The key element of this battle is the demon not to be able to petrify/hold you. With this aspect being taken cared of, the demon suddenly is not THAT threatening anymore and the dreadful confrontation is pretty much straightforward. I usually keep him busy with some summons(skellies are very efficient) while I take care of the cultists. They go down very fast, few things in this game can withstand the fury of hasted archers and the cultists(including the NPC) are not among these things. Afterwards I simply engage the demon with above mentioned archers and throwing in a spell or too, nothing fancy. However, I haven't tried to tackle him solo though.

For me wands of summoning were essential. The main priority is keeping something, ANYTHING, between that evil demon and your party.

Sorceror.

Take off and nuke the site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.

As variously mentioned above, use some variation on the immolation strategy - lots and lots of fireballs.

Try moving your party into position invisibly - 3rd level mage spell Invisibility 10' Radius.

Click here to check out how I recently did it. Includes some nice screenshots as well

I think the Ace Letec has magical resistance, so you'll need to lower his resistance first; with the spell lower resistance (a 5th level mage spell, I think?)

This may be forum necro, but this boss can be extremely annoying for me.
If only Lower reistance was even available in BG1 to begin with...

I seem to have read that Mirrored eyes potions work... which i never tried before... all i did was use free action on Branwyn, and then dispel her after a few rounds, which still wasn't difficult because of the rate at which he gazes (ring of free action kind of helps a bit).

Edit: When i last played he would literally ONLY use death gaze against branwyn, and since that requires a save, it's worth glugging a potion which gives save bonuses if there are no mirrored eyes potions.

The even more annoying part comes later when he uses unlimited vampiric touches to literally heal himself (which is incredibly cheap).
