Hey all, just looking for a bit of clarification. I recently bought the Baldur's Gate 4-in-1 box set and have been having a blast so far. Aside from the occasional enemy crit, it hasn't been too bad difficulty-wise.

But anyway, I was recently looking at experience tables and noticed that Baldur's Gate has a cap at level 7 (9 with the expansion). I just recently made it to Chapter 3 and my Mage is still only about half-way to level 2. Considering the game has 7 chapters total, I was wondering if someone could tell me if I'm doing anything wrong. I can deal with slow progression, but I'm afraid that eventually I won't be able to cope with later enemies. Thanks, in advance.

You can easily surpass the TotSC XP cap in BG1. A lot of that XP comes towards the end of the game.

But you may wish to explore some wilderness and gain a level or two before you continue through the story.

My thanks. Just to clarify, so you would say that I probably will reach level 9 in TotSC? I ask because in my experience with past Bioware games, I for some reason rarely reach the level cap my first play through.

Also, with Sword Coast, would you say it's necessary in order to play Baldur's Gate II? I know it increases the number of areas to explore in Baldur's Gate, but what I've read so far about it makes me think it can be played concurrently (or even skipped entirely) before continuing to the sequel.

There's enough experience in BG1+TotSC for a party of 6 to reach 250k-300k XP per party member. Reaching the cap shouldn't be a problem.

BG1 ends when you defeat the main villain. If you have TotSC installed you need to finish the TotSC areas before that. TotSC is pure side-quest. If you don't want to play it, you only lose out on whatever enjoyment, XP and loot you would derive from it. There are no connections with the main story.

Thank you very much for the speedy replies, much appreciated. Gonna go do a few side quests.
