The way I understood it, Old Gods were just relatively powerful entities in the fade, that were trapped on our (as in Thedes) plane of existence when the Tevinter mages did whatever it was they did to screw with the balance of the fade. They aren't nessasarily magical, just creatures from a different brane of reality. I don't think they are limited to only being dragons, it's just the most convenient (and hardest to kill) physical form for laying down some righteous fury on those meddlesome humans.

Now that I think about it, isn't that the whole reason you need GW's to kill them in the first place? As I recall if a GW doesn't land the killing blow, they just manifest in the nearest darkspawn. So yeah, not limited to dragons at all.

I just wonder why so many people believe the Chantry's vision of events. Isn't it interesting how the Maker, jealous over how humanity fails to give him the attention he seeks, creates the taint and sends the darkspawn after the Old Gods, to turn them into a twisted perversion of what they were before? Why blame the Tevinter magisters on this, when they did nothing wrong?
