All the great RPGs that I know of are already mentioned.
Some of my favorites was the Witcher, NWN ser; Morrowind and ME1.

Speaking of RPGs, what do you guys think of Risen? I tried it a little bit, didn't quite like it (don't know why exactly), and then I stopped because I had other unfinished games on my comp... Does it get better as the game progress?

P.S. I just remembered hearing some really good stuff about Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines... Maybe that's worth a shot...

It's been a long time since I played Bloodlines but for what it's worth I remember enjoying it. If you like the concepts give it a shot imo.

Knights of the Old Republic, it's basically the combat system Dragon Age should've had on the Xbox instead of it's current crap one.

Planescape: Torment. Though it might be a bit of a pain to get to run properly on a new PC. REALLY worth it though.

Risen is a very good rpg for people who are more interested in
combat and stats than narrative, which might exasperate a fair number of
DAO fans. To be sure, the game has a decent (if also spartan) fantasy story, but one must focus on the
mechanics of gameplay in order to get through it. Yes, it gets better as you go but IF and
ONLY IF you enjoy hardcore adventuring/exploring. Your nameless protagonist has to fight hard to survive and thrive after he's washed up on a beach wearing nothing but rags. Once he's leveled up enough, though, he can really dominate his enemies, and the story progresses more quickly. The sort of DAO fan who also loves games like Gothic or Demons' Souls might like Risen, but it's probably not for players who need an emotional narrative to drive them through the mechanical details. It's a game that is much more about HOW than WHY. And the "Save" command is your friend...

The Witcher would probably appeal  to a broader audience on the strength of its narrative and characters.

Witcher's pretty awful for motion-sickness. I tried to get into the game, but I could only take about 15 minutes before the hyper-sensitive camera and Geralt's loping up-and-down running made me queasy. I had similar problems with Gothic 3 and Guild Wars. Oblivion was fine, though.

If you don't mind hack & slash type combat, Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege 2 can be fun.

Oblivion was cool, so was Morrowind.

Id say the old Icewind Dale. Its more linear (a lot more really :-) ) thatn Baldurs Gate, but the story is great and the scenarios absolutely beautiful (I find the winter sets being my favourite in fantasy games).

I also second The Witcher, most definetely (you can customize the perspective if you get motion sikcness).

Strange, I only experienced motion sickness in the FPS style games (not always), with The Witcher and Guild Wars I could be for hours and no problem.

The Witcher can have the "Over The Shoulder" camera, but you can also set it to that other, DA:O or NWN style camera view (whatever the name is)...

Edit:

A more obscure RPG that has elements similar to Dragon Age is Drakensang.

Planescape: Torment suffers from a case of "the longest reply is always the best one", especially as you keep raising your Int, Wis and Cha, but it remains a fantastic game nevertheless.

Drakensang is more akin to the old AD&D games, IMHO. It's a game that can be quite unforgiving, and it doesn't help that the English translation isn't amazing. The translation of some of the The Dark Eye terms seems to complicate things unnecessarily (such as Adventure/Experience Points), and it doesn't help that the game refers to them differently - An example being the skill trainers referring to Experience Points as Levelling Points.

It's a good game, though. Would take it over DA:O in a heartbeat.

Amazon, Steam, Direct2Drive - Digital copies are annoyingly expensive, so you're best trying to track down a retail release.

Drakensang isn't expansive, so if you can, get the expansion as well, heard many great things about it. Unfortunatly it's not available in my country...

There isn't an expansion for Drakensang. There's one for The River of Time, but that's not even out in English yet.

Ofcourse, that's the one i meanPosted Image..
Didn't know it wasn't out in english yet, still, heard alot about it.
Also another game the OP might like is Divinity 2: Ego Draconis, it was a bit buggy, but patches solved that.
Its a game from belgium, in english, which includes rpg AND fps style combat.
Not really a spoiler, since it's obvious the moment you read the backside of the box:
you get a dragon about 1/4th in the game, which you'll control 3rd person fps style. A bit like LAIR on ps3 did, but much better.

And again, I have to quench that recommendation (Divinity 2) on the grounds that an enhanced release is due in October, alongside the expansion pack in a convenient released called "The Dragon Knight Saga".

I don't know where you got the idea it has FPS combat in it, though. It's closer to a hack 'n' slash RPG with pseudo-vehicular combat scenes.

You seem to ehh, a bit more informed about the subject:D
Never knew an enhanced release is to be released in october, looking forward to see what they'll improve (hoping for something major as the witcher developers did).

About the fps combat during dragon fights, I find it a bit of both.
Normal combat is indeed better described as an hack 'n' slash then as an rpg like final fantasy (since it's nothing like that game), since I didn't specify that.

EDIT: has the OP ever played sw: kotor 1&2? And how about Bioshock 1&2, Boderlands, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Trilogy (last 6 more fps then rpg), Fable: the Lost Chapters, Overlord, Fallout 1, 2, 2.5 and 3 and the Witcher?

I would honestly recommend Starwars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, they are 2 of my favourite games EVER.

KOTOR 1 is an absolute must. Not only is it the best Star Wars game ever made it's one of the best games ever made. Period. KOTOR 2 is a great game as well and only suffers because of Lucas Arts not allowing the development team completely finish the game (sidequests and such). Still, it's a fine game that improved on a few minor details.

NWN's was groundbreaking with the user created modules and nigh limitless customization. It's also very cheap and should run well on most PC's at this point.
