Fixed my problem by setting core affinity to 0 (1 core only).  Stutters once a blue moon now and for only 1-2 seconds instead of 3-5.  Very noticeable difference.  See this post social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/223173

The problem I'm having is I've got most the downlaodable content and Awakening installed but when I try to patch 1.04 it gives me the 'cant find Dargaon Age Orgins and closes patcher.  I'm leary about uninstalling and re-installing because I don't want to lose the download stuff.  Anyone have this issue?

The dowlnoadable patch is only for DA:O retail version. In case of digital download version, patch is supplied or automatically applied by the online store where you bought the software (like Steam).

I don't know about patch 1.04, but today I tried to fire up the game again since a couple of months ago. I have played the game till the end a few times, I've got the first two DLCs installed successfully (Warden's Keep & Stone Prisoner) with no bugs or any problems at all. So I've decided to play the game again for old times sake and guess what. The game doesn't even WANT to start. I mean I can't get even to the opening cinematic or anything.
I haven't made any changes to my system configuration (incl. hardware, drivers, etc.). The "version information" says: DAOrigins.exe v1.02, DAOriginsLauncher.exe v1.01 and DAOriginsConfig.exe v1.03. Apparently I have not installed patch v1.04 or whatever, but anyway my biggest question is WTF? Why am I unable to run it?
The game loads EXTREMELY slow and the only thing I see "ingame"  is the dragon-age-kinda-mouse-pointer on a black screen.
That's it. That as far as I can get.
So, WTF?

Did you install another game or game demo that is using PhysX? If this is the case, uninstall your current PhysX software (using Windows Add/Remove Program) and reinstall the version of PhysX supplied with DA:O

Yeah, actually. I did install Mafia 2 Demo yesterday and btw I'm on ATi. I'll give your idea a go ;)

In fact, I had exactly the same issue with Dragon Age after installing Mafia2 demo. Here is how I solved it:
- uninstall NVidia PhysX from Windows Add/Remove Program panel
- download and install Drive Sweeper
- launch this program and select "Analyse and clean" in the Home section on the left of the interface
- in the right hand list, check only NVIDIA - PhysX
- Click Analyse button at the bottom. Once the top list has been updated click Clean and confirm you want to clean the entries present in the list.
- Once the clean process is complete, close all application and reboot your computer
- reinstall PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware.msi from Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\mafia ii - public demo\\3rd folder.

Well I did kinda similar thing just a while ago and it did not work. I've uninstalled Nvidia PhysX, I've run both TuneUp Utilites and CCleaner to clean the registry. I've even checked the registry myself for any nvidia/physx entries, then I installed the PhysX from my DA:O CD aaaand ... nothing. Still the same. The funny thing now is, the game (I mean the black screen) starts after about 10min of clicking the DA:O icon EVEN if I "end task" it. :)

Anyway I'll try your suggestion. Hopefully this will solve the mystery.

Drive Sweeper is a cleanup utility for very specific software/driver (like ATI or nVidia graphic drivers) that not only remove registry entries but also delete any file left over after an uninstall of one of the driver/software it can manage.

Right...well you can call me a bot, but I can't seem to install driver sweeper on my PC. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 and the DS.exe keeps telling me "the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running". Yeah right, the hell is not! DS 2.1.0 IS compatible with all Win OS as far as I can see.

Never used it, TBH, but have you tried troubleshooting compatibility? (Right click the program, choose "Troubleshoot Compatibility.")

Edit: sorry for the double with lizzbee
Have you tried to launch the installer in compatibility mode?

I've tried everything, but it turned out it was my Opera browser. Somehow it downloaded 132kb while the program is 5mb. Now I did everything you say but instead of installing the "Mafia PhysX" again I installed the Physx from my DA:O CD.

It doesn't work so I'm still unable to play it.

I'll try the same procedure but with the Mafia PhysX this time although I see no point doing that 'couse it was like that in the first place.

Maybe if I update my ATi drivers to the latest? Which has to be ... 10.7? (I'm using 9.11 now)

I always have problems that no one else ever has. I installed patch 1.04 on my system. I have a quadcore at 2.4 with 8800 GTS 512 in SLI mode. Here is what I have noticed. First, I can no longer run Character Creator and, in fact, had to delete from my system. Any attempt to run it past the intro schematics and my system crashes all the way out of Windows and DOS. Second, in game my character during the rescue of the queen and while wearing the disguise goes totally naked when going through a door that prior to this patch would have him change to dragon armor. So I have to stop action and redress him. It does not happen to the other characters with him. Third, in the alienage when you enter the room with the elf with the bow there, prior to patch 1.04, were approximately 4 or 5 swords men with her, not counting the bowmen behind the table in the other room. Now that number has doubled on swordsmen and the ability to kill each one takes at least twice as long. Usually resulting in the death of my entire party. BTW I am playing this one on easy! Fourth, I have a tactics slot set to take a health potion when health drops below 50%; however, many times the others in my party fail to take them at the appropriate time and, of course, die. Lastly is the ‘dance’. I try to use the tactical importance of doorways or similar constructs when confronted by a number of enemies. They wind up all six or seven crowded into the same doorway trying to all get through at the same time. Than would not be a problem and actually what I intended except this is when my character has decided he also wants to go through the doorway at exactly the same time. He cannot and this is where the ‘dance’ comes in. Unless I take a hand in it my character will dance the entire time and not participate at all in the battle.

I swear. Maybe Bioware should just not try to fix it anymore because every time they try they only make it worse!

I get the "dance" too. Doorways and narrow hallways are my nemesis, especially since I'm usually playing a DW rogue, with Zev and Alistair with me.

Numbnumb27, the same thing goes for Mass Effect as well. After the first patch the game was completely unplayable. Bioware are making hell of a games, but sucks in patching them.

JackM, sorry mate, unfortunately your solutions is not going to be my solution... The game just doesn't want to run. I might try downgrading or upgrading the video drivers and when everything is messed up ('couse eventually it will be) I'll just format C:\\

Anyway thanks for the help.

Cheers.

One way I found to know whether to upgrade video drivers is to check you save files and if you get pretty colored squares or such rather than the sceen you wanted to save then you should upgrade.

To Calin Panderascu:

Well on everything high and 4xAA, Resolution 1440x900, framebuffer OFF i get in Ostagar about 25-29fps. Started human noble and in castle (cant remember name) i get like 115fps and when fighting starts i get 60-50fps and in big duel at end i get 28-30fps. Havent played past Lotharing coz i get EVEN there like 35fps constant which i think is weird. Reducing settings doesn't really help enough.

If you just wanted to know about performance overall its ok card. In resident evil 5 benchmark i put everything max, even AAx8 and minimum fps 45 which i think were pretty good.

On a lighter note, I have noticed a bug that is just hilarious! Occasionally my character will not straighten up after a fight. He then walks around in this fighting crouch....except, at that point, he looks like a two year old with a full diaper! LOL. Saving at that moment and then reloading cures the 'loaded diaper' syndrome.

You can also quickly solve this issue (without any save and reload needed) by activating a talent or a spell that force the character to draw his weapon(s). As there is currenlly no combat, the character will soon put back his weapon(s) and regain a normal posture.

I have no performance problems unless the following is true, Ambient Occlusion is enabled (massive performance hit) and/or Anti-Aliasing/Transparent Anti-Aliasing.

Currently using a Gainward 250GTS 1GB "Deep Green" video card with my system.

I've been encountering numerous glitches (check my second forum post via my profile) and I have just had two crashes tonight. Both occurred during the Circle of Magi arc with my character Grom. I'm between 35-40 hours into the game, having started with the Redcliffe arc and now onto my second arc, and have just started to experience this. The dxdiag.txt in my second forum post is still current and my drivers are all up to date. This seems to me a software-side issue (e.g. within the game software) and we should just hope BioWare puts out something to fix it.

To Franpa:

Whats Ambient Occlusion and is there way to disable that? Maybe that might help me with my low fps in many places?
