Save gems and runes.
Tip on penny-pinching: Save before you buy specialization manuals. Reload the game after you buy them. You will still have the specialization unlocked.

For weapons, armour, and wearable items it should be obvious what you don't want. For misc & gifts it's a little tricker, so if in doubt keep them. I'd advise holding onto all crafting components. I believe that with enough skill you can make stuff and sell it for more than the cost of the ingredients, but this isn't true at low levels (e.g.lesser pots)

you can go back to areas with someone with max lock picking to open the chests that you couldn't open before and gett the loot you couldn't carry before.
Also i killed a drake and got 20g.
There is a belt to increase the cash you get from loot.

Do all of the shops pay the same for loot? I'm wondering if I should save up loads of trash and then off-load at the (possibly) better paying shops...

There are two good quests in Orzammar for near 50 gold:
The first can be taken from Regok.
The second is from pride demon in Deep Roads.

I agree with one of the other posters ... you're probably not looting enough. Or you've got a similar problem in that you're keeping junk buffs and you don't have the space to loot enough. I sell all buffs except rock salve, haste salve, 2-3 poisons, health goodies, and lyrium potions. Everything else is junk.
Also, don't store too much in Warden's Keep. Vendor it!
Resist the urge to buy too much from vendors. For the price of a flask, you can make tons of potions and health salves by yourself. You'll find tons of raw materials.

I haven't even entered the Alienage in Denerim yet, and I've gone up as far as 360+ gold. (It's down to 160+ now, after some big purchases, but I think I've spent more than 100 - 150 before I hit the 360 mark)
Just be thorough. Do the side quests (as many of them as you can, I guess. Some pay REALLY well). Revisiting some NPCs may also yield stuff (e.g., the Ortan dwarf in Orzammar). I also recently revisited a location that had 3 or so chests that I couldn't pick earlier (I use Leliana as my primary lockpicker), and that got me around 5 or 6 gold.

Gold is intentionally scarce, Bioware wants you to run the side quests, many side quests ONLY OFFER GOLD as a reward.
Although it seems pretty harsh how much the vendor marks up items to 110gold and then will only buy the same item for 6 gold.
The best armor and weapons I've found were free(quest/story). The best rings/belts were expensive, really expensive, vendor items
If things get really tight, sell off unique gear if you don't really use it much. Like Juggy armor

Five things to do to make money fast:
1) Precious Metals quest (maxxed out return) = 58 gold + Crow dagger. There is no fighting, and with coercion 4 you get the maximum return.
2) Asunder quest = 25 gold. If you let the spirit free rather than kill him. He doesn't drop anything, so why bother fighting?
3) Streamline skills and talents so you can fight mostly without potions or poutices, ASAP.
4) Lockpick 4. Free stuff, what more needs to be said.
5) Pickpocket 4. Pick the pocket of every NPC in the game, as you can get lots of poultices, potions, trap and poision ingredients that way.
There are some minor exploits also, but those probably should be listed under cheats.

I had similar problems on my first playthru, but once I figured out herbalism - my second playthru I had more money than I found stuff I wanted to buy. In fact, I had 1200 elfroots in my inventory because I couldnt think of anything else to buy.
- Buy the haggle belt from the dwarf in your camp as soon as possible. Wear it whenever you're dealing with a merchant.
- NEVER buy potions or poultices. Learn herbalism ASAP and buy components for your potions. The elf forest has unlimited elfroot, the mage's tower has unlimited lyrium, and the dwarf in your camp has unlimited vials, distilators, and "c"'s. You need two "c"s for every "d" for the greaters. Buy recipes ASAP.
- Play with a mage to limit your poultice-based healing. Learn Heal ASAP.
- Train a thief - you need 30 cunning and level 4 devices to open every lock in the game. Loot like it's going out of style. Remember - you're not stealing, Zevran is. You're a Grey Warden and Im sure you'd NEVER do that! LOL
- Buy backpacks, gifts, and books and nothing else. Use the gear you loot. Wait until the endgame to go on a shopping spree.
- Learn Coercion if you want your character to barter for better quest rewards. Cunning influences Persuasion - 30 cunning will beat every Persuasion check in the game.
