Sorry to post another thread about this, but until the forum search feature is working it's really hard to find existing threads on a topic. Has anyone else seen this? I've seen it work (on my desktop PC, where the character creator is working properly), and not (re-playing the scene on my laptop, where the character creator isn't working but I was able to copy over my characters folder). In the latter case Alister actually appears and is already in my party at the end of the conversation when I wake in the hut with Morrigan. I didn't see him in the former playthrough until going outside. When I leave the area, Morrigan is still not in my party.

it sounds like you have some sort of corruption on your laptop's install... try Microsoft update, then uninstall the game and reinstall

Huh? Why?

because it's not working? Microsoft update has a lot of "optional" updates that are necessary for gamers, installing those may help and if your installation is bugged (which it sounds like since you were talking about the character creation crashing the game elsewhere) the only way to fix the install is to reinstall

JG: with all due respect, "reinstall because it's not working" isn't what I would describe as helpful input. That much I can figure out for myself. I posted to find out if this is a known problem that anyone else might be having, and I'll wait until I have some feedback on that before doing something as draconian as full uninstall and reinstall.
For the record, my system is set up to update regularly. Nothing is pending on the mandatory list. The only thing on the optional list is a video driver update, which might help with the character creator problem. However, the last time I used MS Update to install a video driver it hosed my display, so I'm being a bit more cautious about that now. However, there's no obvious reason I can think of why a video driver would have any effect on a companions joining the party. That sounds more to me like a scripting bug.

I hear ya mate, but JironGhrad is really trying to help you-- He's been a huge solution provider to hundreds of people with varying technical issues on this forum.
On to your issue, do you have the toolset installed?
In the meantime, can you go back to an older save, and play up to Morrigan and see if the scripting is still having an issue?

right... but the stuff that's necessary for gamers isn't considered "mandatory" by microsoft... you stated that your game doesn't work correctly as installed and you had to copy a saved game over and you're having problems with cutscenes... that's usually graphics or audio. If graphics/audio don't fix the problem, then you probably have a corrupt installation. The only way to fix a corrupt installation is to "reinstall"... just because you don't like the answer doesn't make it less of a valid answer. As to your question about it being a known problem, I've taken the last 2 days off from playing to try to help out here and I've read every thread (and darn near all the posts) and seen nothing like what you've described

ChandlerL: Not at the moment. I was one of the Toolset Beta testers, so I had some version of it installed for most of the year. I uninstalled the pre-build release last week, though, and haven't gotten around to installing the release version of the toolset yet. I suppose I could install it and examine the scripts -- that's not a bad idea. Thanks!
Regarding your other suggestion: I did go back to an older save, and play up to Morrigan on the laptop. That's when I encountered the problem. On my first playthrough on my desktop, it worked fine, and I have a later save with Morrigan in the party that plays fine. I wanted to re-play that scene, though, because I had given good equipment to the Tower Guard and Soldier that I didn't realize I would lose because my inventory was full after the ogre battle.

I think the toolset was mentioned becasue it screws up a persons install and you have to manually delete certain files. uninstall reinstall doesn't remove them.

You could also try clearing your Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override folder and your Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\modules\\Single Player\\override folder. Currently if you export certain core resources or anything from Single Player, it can cause problems in the main campaign,

JironGhrad: Having characters join a party is done through scripting. From what I can tell the graphics, audio and cutscenes are displaying and working flawlessly. However, if this isn't a known problem then perhaps I will consider an uninstall and reinstall. I generally don't like doing something that drastic without a good reason, though.

nono, You don't need to get that far into it. I asked because in your Documents\\Bioware\\Dragonage folder you may have remnants from the toolset install that is screwing up your single player experience. If that's true, here's the fix:
1) Load toolset, goto tool > export > Empty Export Directories
2)
FIND:
Windows XP: My Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules
Windows Vista: Documents\\\\Bioware\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules
Delete anything called single player
3)
FIND
Windows XP: My Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules\\\\single player\\\\override
Windows Vista: Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules\\\\single player\\\\override
Delete anything in this folder
4)
FIND:
Windows XP: My Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\packages\\\\core\\\\override
Windows Vista: Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\packages\\\\core\\\\override
Delete anything in this folder
1) Load toolset, goto tool > export > Empty Export Directories
2)
FIND:
Windows XP: My Documents\\\\BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules
Windows Vista: Documents\\\\Bioware\\\\Dragon Age\\\\modules

Chandler: I'll check that, thanks. I did indeed do exports from the toolset on the laptop last month before uninstalling. I didn't, howeer, from my desktop machine. So that sounds like it would fit my situation.

Yep just celan out those two directories, as uninstalling doesn't seem to clear them.
Glad I read this before installing toolset, I might just wait to do so... at least till I finish game once or twice...

Completely correct Phal. Uninstalling the toolset won't clear out those folders because that's where the toolset stores user created mods.

I just cleared out the toolset folders listed above and retried the scene. It's working fine now, so that does indeed look like it was the source of the problem. Thanks, guys!
And JG: That's an example of why I don't like "shooting from the hip" with drastic decisions like "reinstall everything." It's important to investigate and think a problem through first. If I had done as you suggest, I would have created a great deal of work and inconvenience for myself, and in the end it wouldn't have solved the problem. Or if it had, then it would have done so by permanently deleting beta test material that I needed to save and preserve by copying it out of those folders first.
