... For want of a better phrase. So what exactly are they? Are asari meant to be evolved from squid or octopi or something? Can they open up? That'd be pretty scary, I have to say. Generally the other racial features of the ME races have been explained, like the krogan hump and headplate, the turian thick skin and the elcor stockiness and quadropedal nature. The asari's weird head tentacles have always seemed odd to me. I mean, it kind of puts a damper on romancing Liara if kissing her and holding the back of her head would feel like licking an octopus while tickling its tentacles...

The hump is basically like a camel's hump; it stores fat and water so it can last for a long time without eating. Big humps are things to be proud of because it means the krogan is a successful hunter and warrior. The headplate is just an evolved bit of natural armour. Their eyes are positioned like a herbivores eyes rather than a predators eyes, this is because their world is so dangerous it's more important to have a wide field of vision than it is to have the front-mounted eyes that a predator would normally have.

Don't get me wrong, I think the asari are very sexy in general. It's just that I fear the back of their heads may feel rather a lot like this...

They are flexible.

They can use them as a cap to block the suns rays. They can shape their..."hair cut". Clean their ears, nose. Rub their eyes.

Much better than their hands :P.

i always wondered what those are. they probably serve some function but as far as i know nothing has been revealed about them.

i always pictured them as antenna's for their biotic and mental powers

It doesn't look squishy. It seems kind of hard, judging by the fact that it doesn't jiggle when they move their heads. But I could be wrong. Maybe Bioware just hasn't implemented physics in their tentacles, yet :P.

I'd love to see the head tentacles animated XD Imagine kissing an Asari and then feeling something caress the side of your face (hint: it's not a hand).

DO NOT WANT

Anyway, this part of this very bizarre picture reminds me of what an asari head may really be like...

Not every alien feature has to have a purpose or function. I always saw it as a purely artistic feature, how can you look at an asari in profile and not see some elegance there?

I'm more interested in why they look so human(eg. five fingers, five toes) when the majority of other race has weird claw-like hands. Seems more than coincidence that humans, asari and dell all have the same number of digits.

The "dent" that seems to exist in the middle of the tentacles is just creepy.

Lol, that was so funny. Haha, better think twice before touching one of those. Brings a whole new meaning to "Look! No hands!"

I always think of them as just a fleshy flaps or cartilages . Not movable as in asari not being able to move them on their own. they remind me of the Twi'leks from Star Wars.

They're folds of skin. Not movable like an appendage. Think of it as hair, just as one clump rather than tiny follicles.

My guess is that they are rigid but flexable. Note that in ME 1 when you would choose Liara for a mission and she had to put on a helmet she wore a normal human size helmet. She would not be able to do this if they were rock hard because they protrude out from he back of their head. She would need here own style of helmet to accomidate the ends of her tentacles. Simular to how the Turians have long hard bone and cartilidge spikes protruding out and over the back of their heads. Thus you see all Turian helmets have a long cone like shape to the back of their helmets. This is not true with the Asari.

They are also better described in the Mass Effect book Revelation. As Lt. Anderson sits at the bar in Cora's Den watching an Asari stripper dance he goes into depth as to the fact as to how human they look and into details about their "tentacles."
