Note that in ME 1 when you would choose Liara for a mission and she had to put on a helmet she wore a normal human size helmet.
Actually her helmets were streatched out in the back to make room for the tenticals.

mass effect aliens are one major shortcoming imo. the hanar are an abomination to all that is scientific in nature, and the elcor could not have possibly developed intelligence without being able to use tools (the whole walking on all fours kinda gets in the way of holding stuff). the asari are just stupid, aliens who look exactly like humans but with blue skin and tentacles? COME ON.

The thing that really bothers me is the Hanar. Sure, the Protheans gave them language and whatnot, but what they did NOT give them, and what they lack even now, is the ability to manipulate tools. For this reason, the Hanar would NEVER have become a technological civilization. They would have been stuck in the hunter/gatherer phase forever. Now hold on you say, the protheans could have given them advanced tools to skip them past that stage. Not so, if they had, then the Hanar would have been wiped out by the reapers right along with the protheans. The ability to create and use tools is the number one prerequisite for technological progression, even more important than intelligence. It doesn't matter how smart you are, if you can't hold a tool there's only so far you can go.
PS: I realize the hanar can use simple tools by wrapping their tentacles around them, but unless they have some heretofore unmentioned anatomical parts within those tentacles, they simply don't have the ability to manipulate the fine tools needed for advanced technology.
PSS: Or maybe the Hanar just make everything gigantic, you never know.

Not every alien feature has to have a purpose or function. I always saw it as a purely artistic feature, how can you look at an asari in profile and not see some elegance there?
I'm more interested in why they look so human(eg. five fingers, five toes) when the majority of other race has weird claw-like hands. Seems more than coincidence that humans, asari and dell all have the same number of digits.

really cause last time I checked science hasn't found any aliens to compare too and how life evolves into sentient being we only have one refrence and we don't really know how we did it either. Also Dolphins can't use tools, but they have language, intellgence that borders on pre cognition, and a strong sense of community and social structure. In most cases Dolphins and Orca out class Primates in every fashion.
think about it. if you can't use tools, how in the world are you going to build a spaceship? forget that. if you can't use tools, how can you write books and communicate knowledge? just because we haven't found any other life out there doesn't mean the rules of evolution change on a different planet. you need a very specific set of conditions for an advanced civilization. i know the elcor knuckle walk, and that is the point. they knuckle walk because if they don't, they will fall down and die. its not exactly easy using any tool if a fall can kill you.
