I get this error twice when trying to launch ME, then it freezes on the loading screen. I see the dsound.dll is in the system32 folder and the freezes happen when I try to run from the launcher or binaries folder. The configuration program runs ok, it's the game that will not launch. I've tried a couple of reinstalls with no luck. It is the same with AVG turned on or off (tried disabling spybot, adaware, AVG after reading another thread), running as administrator but it pretty much always freezes after the error messages. I can alt-tab and close the game from the taskbar so it's not freezing my system up.
It is the downloaded version from EA and running on Vista x64, Q9450, 4gb ram, DX10, 9800gtx driver version 258.96, Xonar DX soundcard.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you reinstalled the drivers of your sound card?

Try running a system disk check, If it won't work after reinstalling drivers. And then reinstall them again.

Thank you both. I did the check and re-reinstalled the driver. I believe that that worked because now my game just freezes upon launch without the dsound error. It's a back to square one kind of thing but that's one less issue to sort out. Cheers.
