Kinda late in the game to be asking for help, I know.

But anyway, I defeated the first Melissan, the one that calls up Irenicus and Bodhi (except that Melissan doesn't fight in this one.)

Then, I diverted the essence. She calls up the Five, except for Balthazar who switched sides and is with me. And then, I keep losing. No matter what I do. I figured out to go for Illesara first, (as she deals massive damage with that crazy bow and causes spell failure, etc,) and I can defeat her, Abizagal, and Sendai, no problem. Yaga-Shura, on the other hand, is a problem. No matter what I throw at him, it only deals one damage. So, I never get around to killing him, and just keep him busy with summons and maze him once Melissan comes out again.

OK, so far so good. After reloading what seems like 20 times, I finally get her down to "Near Death" and she starts her, "No! You are too powerful! Need to collect more of Bhaal's essence!" spiel. I go, "yay!" and keep hitting her. However, she then failed to transport herself into the center to collect his essence, but instead headed off to the another corner of the plane, and all of a sudden was uninjured again!!!

At this point, Yaga-Shura emerged from his maze, and I failed to get Melissan's health back down as Yaga-Shura and Melissan finish off my party one after the other, all of whom were pretty wearied out at this point anyway and were soon out of spells and greater whirlwinds, etc.

Oh, BTW, my party is PC (Cleric/Mage), Minsc, Valygar, Viconia, Jaheira, and Nalia.

So, any suggestions? Was that a fluke with Melissan healing herself instead of returning to the center?

Ascension is a pretty tough fight, and I assume your difficulty is set to normal because you didn't complain about infinite demons and then the game crashing :P Seriously, this game scales heavily with difficulty level, and I have never managed core rules with a full party myself.

Basically you have to kill yaga sura before Mellisan becomes vulnerable. As noted he only takes one point of damage per hit, so now is the time to break out the elemental damage items. The best two are the flail of ages (3 damage per hit, 5 if upgraded by cespenar) and the halberd you got in the underdark. Minsc, Valygar & Jaheira should use greater whirlwinds, or get improved haste from Nalia / PC. Magic missile, melfs meteors, and energy blades are good too.

Ah, so to eliminate Melissan, I first need to kill Yaga-Shura? Hmm, that explains it, I guess.

I have the Flail of Ages +5, not sure about the halberd though, I might not have kept it given that none of my characters use halberds. What is it called again?

And yeah, I'm playing on Normal, after the battle with Irenicus and Bodhi gave me trouble, I turned down the difficulty from Core. (That thing with Imoen seemed a little unfair... What if she were somebody's sole mage?)

Thanks for the help, I'll try again, this time mazing Yaga-Shura to begin with, eliminating hte other Bhaalspawn, then Yaga-Shura, then Melissan... I hope...

You can probably kill Yaga-Shura in other ways than through elemental damage. Harm probably works, or shapechanging into Mind Flayer and eating his brains or something like that. (Incidentally, Yaga-Shura's near-invulnerability is a bug. His super-duperness is supposed to wear off with time, but doesn't.)

The halberd's called Dragon's Breath +4.

First off, and I realized I made a mistake describing my party -- I have Imoen, not Nalia (not that it makes a huge difference.)

OK, so I tried again, and eliminated everyone except Yaga-Shura and Melissan (again). Got Yaga-Shura down to "Near Death," though, before all of my characters died. My PC put up a brave fight as the last man standing (I tried teleporting to a far corner of the battlefield and then ressurecting Minsc. It almost, almost worked, except that I didn't manage to get Heal off before they reached me, and I don't want to waste a 7th-lvl spell slot on something that can be reached with two lesser spells.) But in the end, evil prevailed once again.

How do you change into a mind flayer? I'm pretty sure you can't with Polymorph Self... Because eliminating Yaga-Shura like that would be awesome. The only non-traditional way I tried beating Yaga-Shura was Finger of Death, and I remember that didn't work...

And how come none of the bug-fixing mods fix the Yaga-Shura bug, if it is one? Other players appreciate the added difficulty?

Thanks for all the help! I'll beat this game yet!

You use the level 9 spell Shapechange.

The Ascension-SCSII AI scripting of SCSII fixes it, and maybe the reworked Ascension component of Big Picture fixes it. Other than that it's likely because Ascension's a mod and most mods do not fix bugs in other mods.

OK, thanks. I ended up using Harm... which worked perfectly, but felt kind of anti-climatic. Here was this monster at whom I'd thrown what seemed like everything I had and had thought nigh invincible... and then I go and kill him in two hits. It was still SOOO epic though!

After a few more reloads, I finally beat the game, chose my destiny, sat back, enjoyed the endings and the end credits, then reloaded, killed everyone with the CTRL-Y cheat and chose the other destiny... it seems to me the game favors the PC taking the option to become an immortal god.

Thanks for all the help beating what was, for me, without a doubt the toughest fight in the game.

I guess now I should go buy BGI and beat that...
