The question with all these ultra-expensive items (not only staves but armor, rings, and so on) is: Are they cost-effective? One finds such an item costing 100+ sovereigns, and another not too inferior to it for 6 sovereigns. Or free, if you get it from a quest. Why the whopping jump in price?

Why isn't there a progression, with intermediate quality items costing 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 etc sovereigns?

I'll freeze you, and then I'll use Storm of the Century. If that fails, I'll knock you on your butt with a fire spell, make you fall asleep and have nightmares, and control your mind with blood magic.

Storm of the Century is the best damn AOE attack in the game, took flemeth out on hard by myself with that move.   And I see your nightmare and fire spells and I'll back you up with paralysis and grease fire.

Spellfury for looks, but yeah Staff of the lost is better in my opinion. I use it as my secondary weapon with vigilance and Voice of Velvet for primary offense.

Looks are subjective. Personally I thought spellfury looked a bit too long and looked a bit too psychadelic, while I really liked the twisted-serpent style of the Staff of the Lost, not to mention it's colour.

Staff of the Lost is way better than Spellfury.... there's seriously no contest there. Personally though, I find myself using Call of the Inferno the most because it has the best possible staff damage that you can get. The staff damage from any other staff just isn't comparable. With a really high Spellpower and Staff Focus you get staff damage in the hundreds easily. Try respecing your guy to put all your points in magic; equip Oven Mitts; cast Spell Wisp, cast Spell Might, deactivate Spell Wisp, then cast Spell Wisp again. Remember Call of the Inferno does fire damage so casting a Vulnerability Hex on your target really makes the damage insane.

You make a very good point. Maybe this will be addressed in DA2?

Spellfury has 10 base spellpower and adds +20, with +4 to all elements (+4 to magic giving 4 more spell power) that means the total SP on that staff is 34.

Staff of the Lost on the other hand has 10 base spell power adds an additional +15 spell power but also adds another +10 magic giving a total SP of 35. If you factor the +75 stamina (I think its a typo and gives Mana since mages dont get stamina) thats greater then the +20 mana +4 more willpower would give and the +50% spirit damage boost the damage output on the Staff of the Lost screams past Spellfury.

Before we begin the detailed comparison, lets make a correction here.  Staff of the Lost's projectile is NOT spirit damaged based, so  the +50% spirit damage property  has exactly zero effect on  the damage that the staff actually does.  It will however, make your Crushing Prison and your Curse of Mortality do more damage, but that's a different discussion entirely.

Lets  do the breakdown now....

Spellfury
-Total Spellpower:  34
- Rapid Aim  (reduces firing time by almost half a second)
-+1 mana regeneration
-+4 to all your attributes... which means:
+20 to mana
+20 to health
+4 to defense
+6 Physical resistance/+6 mental resistance

Staff of the Lost
-Total spell power: 35
-+75 mana
-+15% spirit resistance
-+50% spirit damage
-+5 mental resistance (from the +10 magic bonus)

^what to make of  all that?

Well first, since the difference in spell power is only 1,  this is a very tough call.   One which depends on whether you  prefer  mana regeneration and +20 Mana bonus,    Or whether you prefer a   flat +75  mana bonus.   At least in Awakening where some of the best  mage sustains actually drain mana continuously, I'll take regeneration.

Second, the resistances offered by both weapons is Meh.... not even worth talking about.

That brings  us to  the two staves' other properties.    Staff of the Lost's  +50% spirit damage is  nice.  Very nice, since  It frees your ring and gauntlet slots up  so that you can use them for a different elemental damage  bonus items.  But is +50% spirit damage better than  +20 health and +4 defense  and  Rapid Aim?  In my opinion... no, not really.  Not for a staff.    Or at least it's not enough  to declare that Staff of the Lost  "Screams past Spell Fury"

I have just ramped up the difficulty to nightmare and chose to play mage in order to breath new life into the game prior to DA2.  This is very, very good info mate.
