In my opinion, the Darkspawn had their own style in their previous games. This new design looks like something you could find in other fantasy stories and games. If anything, they should work on demons and the fade, because that got so much potential that they didn't quite utilize. The fade in the first game was too repetitive, and I think they could've used more colours. The fade was much better in awakening.
I thought the darkspawn design failed pretty miserably in the old games. The actual species looked very similar - they all had human as a base. Qunari were tall and purple, but looked like tall humans. Elves were short, but looked like short humans with a little bit of a weird cheekbone structure. And dwarves were short, stocky humans.
They all look like they were made from the same base.
The darkspawn, though, are just confusing. The ogre is nothing like the qunari. It made no sense. Now they've gone the opposite way - the quanri and ogre look very alike. The chalkspawn, though, look much more like humans than they did before.
I think the artists switched the theme of the darkspawn, but if they look alike, IMO that's a far more coherent step foward than before.
