Which weapon is capable of delivering the most damage per backstab for a single-class thief?
I am referring to weapon proficiencies, such as short sword, long sword, etc, not individual weapons
Best backstab weapon?

I guess the standard answer would be dual wielding long swords, since there are so many good ones in the game. But a slightly different viewpoint would be to spend your initial prof. points on quarterstaff and 2 handed weapon ability, since you can buy a +4 QS early in SoA, and find a snazzy +6 QS in ToB. My only hesitation in recommending a QS for an Assassin is that I don't know if you can poison coat a QS the way you could a blade weapon, and that poison bonus might help keep you alive early in SoA.
I'm assuming that you'll be using Tutu if you're starting in BG1.

Quarterstaffs are the best backstabbing weapons because of two particular quarterstaffs (Staff of Striking and Staff of the Ram). The other quarterstaffs are unspectacular.
Katanas come next due to the higher max damage, but katanas are rare and have a problem with enchantment levels and worthwhile extras (there is only one katana with worthwhile extras and that katana doesn't have high enough enchantment level to last throughout the game).
Then it's long swords (last throughout the game unlike katanas), scimitars (same as with long swords), short swords (lasts but have lower max damage) and daggers (yet lower max damage)/clubs (nothing terribly exciting here) in roughly that order.
Single Weapon Style is better for backstabbing with one-handed weapons because it increases your critical hit chance.

As Irrbloss said, the best option IS to have single weapon style, two pips of which will give you a better crit hit chance and -2 to your AC. If you have the Rogue Rebalancing mod installed, there is a short sword you may wish to use. If you are playing vanilla or sans RR, I would recommend katanas for SoA and long swords/scimitars in ToB, especially if you're evil.
Also, don't forget to add a point to short bows so your thief can have some ranged attacks when he's not in a backstab situation.

The second point only lowers your AC. You get the extra critical hits with the first point.SometimesSpring wrote...

Yeah I know, what I meant to say was two pips grants you both benefits. Shoulda been clearer.
