Is this a hardware or driver issue?

Short Story: Playing NWN2 this month, last night got to areas where you pick up Casavir and the graphics flickered, and now cause the screen to striped and flashing, with a cherry freeze on top. Have to reboot windows without shutting down, graphics of the reboot screen and Windows Loading screen are artifacted and Windows Load screen freezes. Won't work until I boot in Safe Mode, then reboot regularly.

Long Story: I've been having graphic issues since the beginning of getting this PC. The graphics card does overheat with Sims 3 (or did before I got some fans, did some tweaking).

Thing is, I had none of these issues until I ran NWN2 for the first time. I had played Oblivion fine, then played NWN2 for a while and the graphics went wonky, then artifacted in Oblivion until I underclocked (my card is at default, used to still overheat when underclocked). Last night my card didn't even hit 60 before the issues started. The computer has been off all night, and yet as SOON as I load the game it goes wonky (where previously I'd been playing hours with no problems).

I run nVidia9800, 4 gigs RAM, quadcore pentium chipset, 500 gig HD. Run Fallout 3 no problems. Oblivion, the mouse was acting up...thought my mouse was dying, but it seems to have stopped going dark for no reason (laser point).

Question: Could the drivers be borked somewhere, or is this truly some sort of hardware issue? Maybe the card is slowly going nuts from hitting 115 degrees  8 months ago? Like I said, no issues with Fallout 3 on decently high settings...that's the most graphically purty game I own for PC currently.

My friend build this computer, it's been pretty good for the year I've had it...but I muss confess this is my first homebuilt machine and I'm starting to think it's gonna be my last as well.

I would definately be concerned with the temp going that high. NWN 2 usese more GPU resources than most other games despite being a nearly 4-year-old game.

With any NVIDIA card, I would be concerned with temps going ober 80C, the max temp on all NVIDIA cards is 105C, and some NVIDIA cards may start breaking down when the temp gets over 80C.

Check your cooling fans for dirt and dust as well as clogging of any vents. I currently run a 9800 GTX+ on my system, and the temps stay in the mid to upper 60's with only brief peaks up to the 70 mark when playing NWN 2 or Dragon Age.

You may wish to download the latest drivers, but I would be concerned that the card may be damaged after hitting up to 115C.

Thank you, Selene. I'll look into the dirt just because I should anyway, but I fired up NWN2 earlier with a GPU sensor log and the highest it hit was 69, which is average. Before the game froze I managed to shut it down, but the graphics still went wonky. BUT the good thing is I got an error message.

and a "serious error":

Damage, willing to concede that. Right now I'm playing the waiting game, seeing if it dies on me before I go buy another one. Could physical damage to the device cause the drivers to fail as above? I had to totally shut Windows down from Safe Mode and hard reboot before it would display properly.

Forgot to note I am running XP. Anyway, I'll give the new drivers a shot, though I read at the previous forum people were leery of it. Heck, couldn't do any worse.

Thanks again for the reply. :)

You can also get a program called MSI Afterburner and set up a custom fan profile, works a lot better that the "auto" setting.

Thanks, CrustyCat. Unfortunately, my fans are already at max, not auto...I watched the computer operate on auto fan speed and laaaaughed and laaaaughed. ;-) Though the program I'm using for that came with the card. Does MSI Afterburner allow you to adjust all the fans in your system? (I've got 7...you'd think, you know...yeesh.)

No, it's just a tool for video cards. I mainly use it for monitoring and fan control, but it can also be used for OC"ing. I was only refering to the auto setting for video cards. Here's a link to some external fan controllers http://www.tigerdire...c.asp?CatId=501 I've heard some good things about some.

Thanks! I look into those. :-)

Update: I installed the new nVidia drivers and still have the same graphic issues with NWN2. So I loaded up Fallout 3. I went to water, caused an explosion, anything I thought was graphically intense. And it was just fine.

Alas, I fear I'll never find out whether or not the King of Shadows wears boxers or briefs. ;-)

It does sound more like the video card is damaged, I don't know if Fallout 3 is more demanding than NWN 2 on a GPU, there are very few newer games that are, and driving a hi-res monitor 1680*1050 and above can over-tax a video card quite easily.

When my 7600 GT died on me, the issue was similar; the game simply overheated the card, and I was still using a 17" standard monitor at the time. Once the damage was done, the card would still support most uses on the computer, I could even play NWN 1 on it, but could not play NWN 2 without the graphics going wonky I don't recall ever getting to see an error report, but the video card woulnt recover fully until I would restart the computer at times where I managed to exit out just before the crash.

Blah. I guess I knew it would happen, but I'd hoped I could get some decent life out of it before it totally died. ;-) Maybe I'll have to hold off playing NWN2 until a complete and utter hard death occurs.

Guess it gives me a good excuse to get something higher end. Thanks for sharing your experience. Sadly sounds like the problem.
