For people who followed my previous piece of entirely reliable insider information, you'll recall I had a slight run-in with the elite police force of Bioware Montreal; the AliGaiders.

Even I have to admit: that was a close one. They even got me into the black van, too, it was terrifying. I mean seriously, whose idea was it to put up air fresheners that make the air smell like fresh haggis? Granted, as a bit of a cooking enthusiast myself, I can appreciate it to some degree. Still, whatever is wrong with a nice, old fashioned pine tree scent?

But that's enough of that, so after I escaped from the AliGaider strike-squad, you might think I would lie low for a while.

But you'd be wrong.

I was putting all that ninja practice to use –I had private lessons with the famous British Ninja--, infiltrating the depths of Bioware to bring you the next new, entirely reliable piece of Dragon Age 2 information.

Note; I'm not entirely sure how sipping a cup Earl Grey and girding my loins with Union Jack underpants beneath my ninja outfit helped me achieve this, but that is beside the point.

Most believe that the phrase “Fight like a spartan” was meant to be read as something in more of a symbolic light. The truth is that its true meaning is a lot more literal than most people were expecting.

Once more, people who followed my previous bit of entirely reliable insider information will recall that I said that beards and such would not be the full extent of the manliness meter. There is another appearance system that ties into that, except this one is more universal then the beard system.

When Bioware said “Fight like a spartan”, they meant it. You will be fighting. Like a spartan.

And that means leather thongs, ludicrously defined skin, giant shields and some mean swords. Amongst other things. But, as with the Manliness Meter, it is not so simple as you might think.

The truth is, reason for changing the art style of Dragon Age is not because what we had wasn't interesting to look at –that was part of the reason-- the real reason was to accommodate this revolutionary new idea of: Spartan Style!

Everyone knows that reverse psychology works extraordinarily well in a fantasy environment. So when thinking of armor, the idea of “the less is covered, the more is protected” can be brought to its full potential.

When a player begins their game of Dragon Age 2, not only will they be introduced to the Manliness Meter or the Period System to either their male or female Hawke, respectively, they will have to work to master Spartan Style.

Now, mastering Spartan Style requires more than stripping down to your skivvies and charging into battle. The sight of a pasty pale person pushing past perilous predicaments is not one enemies will take kindly too. Your near-nudity will enrage them, causing dramatically greater amounts of damage to your character when your Spartan Style is unrefined.

For the sake of not spoiling the story, I'll just say that Hawke receives some tutelage in the skill of Spartan Style not far into the game. Once that is accomplished, then the player may begin building their own personal version of Spartan Style.

The base is basic physique. No one I know really wants to be looking at those insane, over-'roided behemoths on the covers of a lot of muscle magazines. There is definitely musculature involved, but it remains respectful of the player's intelligence.

The three most crucial muscle groups that Spartan Style hinges on are the biceps, the thighs and calves, and possibly most importantly: the abs.

The biceps and arm muscles channel the sheer cosmic force of Spartan Style, striking grievous blows against the enemy as you level up and train them. Mages will be most proficient in this regard. Higher levels will decrease the need for a staff to focus your mana-based attacks and allow for faster spellcasting.

The leg muscles are the manifestation of the exact energy given by Spartan Style that allows your character to dance about the battlefield with the grace of a true fighter. Rogues will be able to make the most of this. These are more complex in that the Rogue will either be able to customize it so that it either grants them either greater dexterity or a greater critical/backstab damage.

And lastly we have the abs; these are the specialty of the Warrior. These increase the player's core energy of Spartan Style. A high level Warrior who has properly invested in the ab attribute of Spartan Style is a fortress of sheer battle prowess, a true fighter to be feared on the battlefield, who can smash through even the toughest and most resilient enemy's defenses. Leonidas would be proud.

One more thing to take note of is that specifically for a male Hawke, there's the Spartan Style attribute of the glutes. I kid you not. A finely shaped and muscular set of Christmas hams is part of what can help make you the Hawke of legend, the Champion Of Kirkwall.

On the flip side of the coin, female Hawkes will have, with no other way to put this; boobs of steel. Refining Female Hawke's shapely, but chaste, bosom into something that the bards shall remember for centuries to come shall be the answer to the gluts of the male Hawke. Plus, higher leveled players will unlock a move that will temporarily stun enemies on the battlefield. (Note; darkspawn and golem enemies are immune to this)

Now, in effort of ease of reading, I'll be breaking this into a couple posts. Next is the details of the attire and appearance aspects to Spartan Style.

Remember what I said about fantasy settings, reverse psychology and “the less is covered, the more is protected”? Well, keep that in mind for this next part.

Most of your will have guessed by now that a master of Spartan Style won't be weighing themselves with trivial things such as armor, they won't be choking themselves in the stuffy embrace of robes and nor will they be paying attention to that forgotten thing know as common sense.

Spartan Style does not care about such things. They are irrelevant.

A master of Spartan Style just as their strength lies within their bodies, it also lies in their leather and/or metal skivvies. These complete the carefully-balanced yin-yang of Spartan Style. They are the crotch-shielding extension of the players own Spartan Style power.

Lower level players will find their Spartan Style neophytes in garb resembling either a Xena outfit or what Dwayne Johnson wore throughout the Scorpion King. For the melee fighter classes, that is, I was unable to get information on the mage low-level Spartan Style attire. Higher levels will open up the options of the classic 300 Spartan outfit --a leather codpiece and flowing cape-- or something closely resembling Princess Leia's metal bikini.

These will fit perfectly with the proportions of the players current Spartan Style. I suppose at its base, it functions just like the armor availability stats from Origins. Players will be able to purchase these outfits from merchants and they will have progressing tiers, ranging from standard leather, to tempered leather combined with metal plates, to the highest tiers of unique items. For example, you have the Codpiece Of The Golden Sun, or the Banana Hammock Of The Avvar Lords. Or you could have something like Empress Celene's White Steel Brassier, or the Dragonebone Bikini Of The Hallowed, rumored to have been worn into battle by the prophet Andraste herself. There's even Aeonar's G-Strings, but that will be a promotional DLC item.

Other pieces of attire will include things such as bandoliers that will increase Defense stats, but lower Dexterity. To feather fans that will increase Dexterity, while giving a penalty to Attack.

And while I wasn't able to get much on the mages, I can say that what there will be will be along http://son-of-da-gam...bdi]these lines

Now that I have that subject covered, I'd like to bring attention to something else I uncovered.

The longer the players use the Spartan Style outfits, their Hawke will get a progressive tan, allowing for the full utilization of the following.

Players will also be able to oil the tanned skin of their Hawke to a fine sheen. Bioware texture artists even brought in Randy Orton in full Grand Wizard Of The Baby-Oil-Boys Club regalia -which consisted of an entire pantry's worth of Pam. This body butter treatment will allow the player to empower themselves with and channel Spartan Style in a more refined manner.

In a manner similar to the Barber Shops that apply to the Manliness Meter, there are different oils and body butters available for purchase. For instance, Orlesian Chivalier body butter will increase the definition of the physique granted by Spartan Style, increase attack potency. But I was able to glean little more than that.

Tattoos and other body markings will also have a presence, working like enchanting armor, except there is the adding and removal of different tribal runes and markings over different parts of the body. For instance, a peace sign on the gluteus maximus will decrease Hostility. Whereas a Dalish Fire God tattoo across the back grants a Fire attack bonus, while increasing vulnerability to cold-based attacks. This can be circumvented by Avvar tattoos, granting resistance to natural damage.

This was all I have been able to glean from my infiltration of the Bioware offices. Thanks to my ninja skills, I was in and out before anyone noticed me. I wanted to stay for the advanced screening of the short film of Duncan's old garage band covering AC/DC that will be included in the bonus features on the Dragon Age 2 Collector's Edition, but alas, I was unable. Woo started sniffing about with the Banhammer he only recently got back from Caradin, so he was more than eager to use it.

Ahh, I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to be the one to bring all of your good people such entirely reliable insider information. Almost as satisfying as knowing I've successfully evaded Bioware's elite AliGaiders, instead of being dragged back to Bioware Montreal to be taken down into the dark, dank recesses to be implanted with a bunch of misinformation and false memories to throw off the media and fans alike.
Nope, that did not happen to me. No siree.

… right?

Further juicy information. I have a question though...

As your beard's level increases, it gets bigger right? And as your spartan level increases, you wear less armour. Eventually though, wouldn't the beard get so big it'd partially cover your nakedness?

It's not nakedness when Spartan Style is involved. And as you'll recall, allowing your beard to just go crazy already applies penalties. Proper management of a beard, such as grooming or braiding when it gets to proper length, keeps in under control and does not interfere with the power of Spartan Style.

And here I was thinking that fighting like a Spartan meant Spartan-style fighting moves in the game. Turns out it is all about your manliness (or "womanliness" for that matter) and flashing body parts.

Ah, that makes sense. And yes, it is freakishly long, longer than I intended.

Still, I don't mind if it isn't read by the majority, it was fun enough just to write it. Posted Image
