So I've been bouncing back and forth between a few different playthroughs and I'm currently on my dwarf noble rogue archer in the tower of Ishal.  Even on Easy, my damage is abysmal and the group is getting stomped in most fights.  I'm aware that they won't be at full strength so early on, but how long does it take until I can actually enjoy playing this class lol.  Any input would be appreciated :)

It's difficult to say when archers get good. Scattershot is helpful, but even with 130+ Attack their hit rate seems to be abysmal.

If you can, try to push towards Far Song and see if that helps.

Your group will have to carry your archer either way, as the archery tree is 90% support. I hear in Awakenings they are pretty powerful, but I have just started my first Awakenings play through so I can't comment on that.

Until ~Lvl 8 or so they can't hit the broadside of a barn so, yeah, they pretty much completely suck at low levels. Some things to do...

*Take Duelling (+10 Att) @ 7 and run it constantly
*Go to Honnleath after Lothering for Harvest Festival (+6 Att)

Your choice after Honnleath...

Mage Tower: +4 Str, +4 Dex (+4 Att)
Redcliffe: Farsong (+10 att)
RtO: Repeater Gloves - allows 'Aim' w/o penalty

* Get Master Archer - Bigger bonus to Aim, grants attack bonus to several talents

Later:
Armsman's Tensioner (+6 att) from Varathorn
Felon's from Wade (+3 att among many other things)

Still jumping on the same limb....

Try raising STR to 20+ as soon as possible. This not only helps dmg, but also allows use of decent armor in the game quite early (eg; Lil Song DLC). DEX and Cunning will still have ample points in which to use related Talents & abiities, I believe

If you are on the PC, give the Respec mod a try on a Saved game and test for yourself. There is a raven close to Duncan just before you are sent to the Tower.

Are you sure it's possible to use Dueling when carrying a bow?I don't think it's possible on Xbox, at least. The icon was greyed out for me as long as I carried a bow which was a bummer of course since I practically wasted a specialization.

This is sound advice.

When I did an archer, I plugged dex heavy early on.  This increases the hit stat and also damage for short bows (you are using short bows right--only switch to long bows when you get the good ones).  Not plugging cunning affects usefulness but that is the way it goes for rogue/archers.  I added Leliana at Lothering as the cunning rogue in my party to offset the fact that my main character was mostly dex at first.

I have had two parties with two archers in the party and it is surprisingly (to me at least) powerful by mid game.  I set only arrow of slaying and scattershot into tactics, no other skills were used but I filled out the skill tree for the passive bonuses.

My first character was an Archer, hopefully I can lend a hand.

Get Rapid Shot as fast as possible. Fill out the Scattershot tree as soon as possible. Ignore the Arrow of Slaying Tree. Filling up the Archery mastery tree is optional.

Get equipment that boosts critical chance. Always have suppressing fire and rapid shot on. Suppressing shot reduces armor I believe.

Your archer, though not doing much damage, should now be debuffing the living crap out of anything it is hitting with occasional/often critical hits, thus making everybody else in your party do craploads of damage on whatever you are fighting.

With this build, you WONT need Arrow of slaying as you do the same damage in less time and with every hit depending on what your archer is wearing.

NOTE: I had a Dex archer, Arrow of Slaying might be a better choice if you are a CUN archer.

Hope that helps.

You don't want to use Rapid Shot for most of the game, as the best bows have Rapid Aim already on them, and it does not stack.

I would advise you to ignore Rapid Shot because it can’t get criticals… which is your main source of decent damage.

I started a Warrior Archer in Origins awhile back. I wound up eventually deleting the character after returning the game after a several-month hiatus, but while I was playing her, she was fine.

While I only finished Lothering with her, I don't remember having any problems with her. Actually, it might have been one of the easiest times, with a team based primarily on long-range: Leliana, Morrigan, and had Dog running around. Just upped her Dex, for the most part. By level 7 I was on my way to Scattershot in due time, but stuff was dying before it even got to my character, the "tank."

Do you still get increased attack and damage using a long bow with dex or is it only with short bows?

Longbows gain attack & dmg from DEX; also gain dmg bonus from STR or Cunning if Lethality is used, and Cunning is higher than STR.
