This isnt exactly about the game per se, but Id like to see if anyone else is in the same boat.

I am going to be in a situation starting around september where I wont be able to hook my xbox into the tv any longer (which means no more mass effect, sadfaise). I know you can hook up the xbox to monitors, and was wondering if anyone had some recommendations in terms of size and resolution that would be good for the mass effect experience?

Well from how far away will you be sitting? I'd say a Samsung P2450 24" widescreen would do you nicely. It has an HDMI port (no speakers, though, so you need headphones or a separate audio rig) so you can get 1080p from the 360.

Any new monitors with an HDMI port will do nicely. 24" and 23" widescreen LED are the norm nowadays. You will also need speakers that can support the audio ports from the console.

But in all seriousness, mass effect on xbox has terrible controls. The PC version is superior to the xbox in everyway.

You can get one for around 100$ in the 19" range.

The more you spend...the better the picture..usually.

99.998% of the monitors on sale today(new) will have the correct ports.

Spend an hour or two in a computer shop and look at the diffrent ones...find one that your eyes like.

Dont be afraid to spend an extra 50 or so if one looks really good to you.

You can go from an 18.5 all the way up to the 37" beasts in most good shops..Price will vary based on quality/size

What exactly are the types of ports I should be looking for?

HDMI, if you have a newer model 360. Otherwise, DVI, VGA and possibly component.

Try to find out if a particular monitor has 1:1 pixel mapping before you buy, as not having it can mess with the picture alignment.

And if you're sitting at your desk, I wouldn't go higher than a 24 incher - chances are you'll just go bugeyed.
