While I favor the GPR over the Mattock because I prefer its rate of fire in most situations, I can see how other Soldier play styles would love this weapon.
The same applies to the Phalanx, which is a great weapon at any range if you can aim. It saved me a few times on my latest playthrough when I was low on Viper ammo. It's not that hard to time long shots with it, it's got solid armor penetration and puts the hurt on Scions.
Then there's the GPS, my hands-down favorite of the new weapons. It actually made me want to use the shotgun and there were periods when I went around entire missions using it and only it.
I think this pack provided a hell of a lot of value.

Depends on your playstyle. The Mattock is refreshing in that it doesn't force you to choose between accuracy and power. It's not full auto, but a quick trigger finger can pull off a fair old RoF.

The Mattock is my new favorite weapon. I love powerful weapons, and I love accurate weapons, and this one gives you both. Usually they balance those traits against each other, and I've always favored accuracy. In this case they found a way to balance it with other things; it has no full auto and low ammo capacity. I personally don't miss the full auto at all. Besides, with a quick trigger finger you can actually fire off quite a few rounds very quickly and with basically zero recoil. Draw a bead and *tap tap* -- 2 shots right in the head. God this thing rocks. You gotta make every shot count, and it is terrible for when you need to spray a bunch of zombies, of course, but in all other respects it is everything I want from an Assault Rifle.
I also love the new shotgun. Shotguns were only very useful for Vanguards before, IMO. Their range was so bad that even as a Soldier I never used it. The Geth shotgun, though, has got good punch even at mid range, and if you take the time to charge it, it is even more powerful than the Claymore.
The Phalanx is a fun pistol to use because of the laser sight and extremely high accuracy, and it is cool to be able to take off specific limbs, but for me it isn't that useful. It isn't THAT much more powerful than the Carnifex, but the RoF is very poor, so if you're facing more than a couple targets it can be too slow. It would help if you're used to using the laser sight, though.

the phalanx looks and sounds soooo cool and the mattock is very fun to use. I found the geth plasma shotgun to be kind of a throwback to ME1 shotguns, it has a longer range and a fairly slow fire rate but it is still very effective, i recommend it for all classes but vanguards.
uhmmmm I only run Vanguards and I find it amazing, better than the Claymore
I can charge a shot, then biotically charge an enemy and blast them doing more damage than I would with the claymore and still have 3 shots left if the job is not done. I can still 1 shot kill nearly any enemy but generals with a non charged shot...the ones right below general are dead with a quick charge-shotgun blast-melee combo. It is devastating against shields and barriers and much more accurate than any other shotgun
in other words you can do everything you could with the claymore and more, you just need to know how to charge it effectively

I'm playing as a Sentinel right now so when I getting to the weapon training part, I might actually go for the shotgun since the Charging aspect seems to suit the Sentinel's Tech Armor playstyle.
Good point, this sounds like this'll make the Sentinel truly a Tank in every sense of the word, with it's armor and lethal but slow firing attacks
I'm on a sentinel playthrough now, and I picked up the shotgun specialization for the heck of it, and two days later, I get this, and let me say, I LOVE the Geth Shotgun. Boost your shields to full, pop out from behind cover, charge it, and you can take out a LOKI mech in ONE FRIGGIN SHOT!
I love BioWare so much for an amazing shotgun. I like the M5 as well, and I think I'm going to play as a soldier next.

The Mattock has this similar limitation against shields while also being very effective against armor. It's semi-automatic firing mode means you have to click your mouse each time you want to fire a shot but you can still get a descent rate of fire out of it. It's low ammo supply means you stand a much better chance of running out often.
A good combination of weapons is this: Phalanx, Mattock, and Locust.
Use the Locust primarily for shields and organics, then switch to the Mattock or Phalanx for armor depending on the distance. At longer ranges the Phalanx is quite useful, one shot armor penetration followed by carefully aimed headshots. At closer, more desperate ranges, the Mattock can eat through armor easily, and if you really are desperate (read: Geth Prime mowing you down) the Mattock is surprisingly good against their remaining health.

it may be useful. Most who have the PC version can tweak their existing
weapons to change the rate and accuracy of fire. I have a friend who figured out a glitch on the 360 version where he can max out his squad points and make all of their talents maxed to the highest levels.
I am excited though for the upcoming "Lair of the Shadow Broker" DLC. I hope it plays long.

Can't that corrupt the save file to the point where you can't import it over to ME3?

what you mean "modded" version... is that being sarcastic, or true??? if so, is that console or PC?

Probably not.. BUT just in case is simple. you just mod the game and revert everything to their original pre modded values. ME3 will read ME2 save as if nothing was ever changed.

How effective is the new shotgun in the hands of squadmates? I use Jack and Tali alot. Can they fire charged shots or just regular?
Well, shotgun looks quite effecitive in my opinion(has a solid damage stat ) and it has long range of shooting (i always equip Tali with this shotgun now) .But squadmates can't use charged shots.

LOL I just realized that the GPS' charged shot is actually more damaging to armor than a shot of the claymore
to armor a Claymore shot will do a damage of 400.8 x 1.25 = 501
The GPS in turn has no modifier against armor but its charged shot will still deal 556.4 to it
yes, this shotgun is downright my fav. The only reason I do not make a new build in which I switch my choice in the collector ship is that I do not know if there will be weapon transfer in an imported ME3 run
