I am thinking of taking on the task of combining a few HAK packs into a single usable game mod. Including The Races of Faerun, Kaedrin's PrC, Light Emitter in Spell Effects and Spell Fixes and Improvements HAKs. Maybe I am getting in way over my head??? Anyone have any tips on the best ways to go about this and things that may hang me up? Also, where can I get a better understanding of the tlk and 2da files?

Don't combine the haks... leave them separate as released by the authors. Just combine the 2da and (if needed) tlk files into one new hak.

Yes, sorry, that was what I was trying to say I was going to do.

I'm hoping this will soon become a thing of the past.
Basically, though, what you need to do, is copy/paste lines from one version of each hak into a merged version, keeping the line numbers the same (you can use notepad for this). The principle is much the same for the TLK, but you need a TLK editor for this.

I'd look up what painofdungeoneternal has done already. I know he has combined quite a few of the more popular haks out there.

I don't know if combined hak pack are a good thing for author. But there are some NWN2 wonder that I only found inside of a compiled package. I wasn't able to find the original ones.
I also have myself tendency to alter the original work for it to suit better what I want to do. Compiled package are great, but what is really imported are combined functional 2DA.

Yea, the .2da concurrence is really the key here. I think the actual assets should remain in separate downloads. This allows folks to have a .2da updated *(and that's minor all the way around) even if they aren't using the assets (which take up more storage than a whole mess of .2da's ever could) now, and leaves it to module designers and PW operator/builders to determine what must be downloaded to play their modules.
All in all, that seems to me the most efficient and sane method for NWN2's setup.

Are there any other game mods that anyone would recommend besides the ones I mentioned?

I'd only offer that you should make sure that whatever you're 'compiling' all use the same .2da files. That way you can offer the "Must Have" compilations in categories for ease of dissemination and overall uniformity. It's easier to verify and keep updated one to three 2da's that all serve the same overall category of use, then it would be to have to manage and track a hoard of them, covering several broad categories of CC.

Before you do any of that talk to pain / brianmeyer. He has already done most of what you are looking for.

Yes, please do speak to pain. I'm currently working with him to make Sea of Dragons and Dungeon Eternal 2 as hak-compatible as possible. Currently our two PW's share about 150MB in identical haks. Once players have downloaded files from either PW they will not have to do the same upon logging into the other PW.
In the future I expect about half the downloads will be interchangable between our two PW's.
