So let's get jiggy with the basics as well as I can 'splain 'em to yas. Let's start with a few basic definitions so your brain doesn't hurt too much right off.
- MP = Multiplayer. Multiplayer is required to play on a PW, but that doesn't mean that all MP is all PW. Bear with me.
- PW = Persistent World. A Persistent World is a Multiplayer environment that is run by folks who operate said PW. PWs come in all flavors, styles and sub-genres.
- ADL = Autodownloader. This is a new introduced feature with the latest patch 1.23.1763 (be sure to update one step beyond to 1.23.1765) The ADL makes it easier for players to get the files they're going to need to join on a particular game world server without making the potential player 'run' all over the net finding the files and then downloading them only after they are told they can't login and play, because they don't already have those files. (Trust me, the ADL -- it's a big cool change from how things were before -- even with the Community creating AuDoLo to address this gap prior to the ADL.)
- AuDoLo = Community made Auto Down Loader. I can't say how much they are alike -- I don't play online, remember? -- though my suspicion is that the ADL used AuDoLo as a sort of template from which to start.
- CD-Key Authorzation = what you need to do (which means entering your CD-Key) so that the game server recognizes you have a valid CD-Key and aren't using an illegally obtained digital copy of the game. *(we hate the folks who make it harder for our gaming to continue by stealing software -- this stuff is already one of the best online bargains IN THE WORLD!)
- HCR = Hard Core Rules. This means that the server enforces as close to possible D&D 3.5 PnP types rules and restrictions. This can involve attractive features such as Perma-Death, Friendly Fire, Weapons/class restrictions, Rest Restrictions and other such additional things that make it Hard Core Rules. Not for sissies.
- HnS = Hack and Slash. This means the server doesn't necessarily enforce Role Play (or possibly even care) but you're guranteed to be fighting -- a LOT. That's why it's called Hack and Slash. Lighter on Role Play, story and In Character restrictions, though compensated by giving you what you really want -- lots of things to kill or kill you.
- Heavy RP = Heavy Role Play. This means you are expected to create a character -- not a toon, not an avatar, not stat driven wakizashi -- a Character. You know, like Han Solo is a character. He's got a background *(even if not everyone knows all of it) and a set of attitudes, ideals, desires, goals and hangups. And in an RP Heavy PW, you are expected to be In Character. Some more than others.
- PvP = Player vs Player. Pretty self explanatory I think. While on WoW or Star Wars Online or any other large scale MMO where PvP is allowed you'll find campers and squatters ready to gank the unwary newb upon entry, this is less likely on a PW. It can happen, mind, but there are usually starting areas for newbs that are non PvP so new players can get their ears dried before they go off and start trying to carve a name for themselves.
- PvE = Player vs Environment. This means instead of always worrying about one of your adventuring buddies slipping a stiletto into your liver from behind, you just have to keep an eye out for monsters, creatures and villains who are rock solid interested in removing you from the scene. That's probably more hyperbole than it's worth, but you gotta admit, it sounds exciting.
- IC/OOC = In Character/Out of Character. Role Play servers is where you'd most likely find this to be of note. In Character is pretty much an expectation on any Role Play Server. Some enforce it to the point where OOC shouts and tells can get you dumped, punished or even banned. You should know what's expected of you as a player who struts his hour upon the stage before your sound and fury OOC signify nothing.
- Haks = Files that go in your HAK folders to play the game. These files are things like necessary custom content for the server, including legal character restrictions, items that you must carry on your character (in order to have increased functionality for play) and other such things you don't know about, possibly don't really want to know about, other than the proper location to store them in your files so you can play.
I had to stop, because I can see people rubbing their brain cases already. Lightweights.
"Well dunniteowl," you say, "thanks for the semester's worth of acronyms and what not, but dang it, man, where do I get started to play already!?!"
I was waiting for you to ask me that. Right here:
Index of NWN2 PW's which is right here in this forum: NwN 2 Persistant Worlds & Multiplayer.
Now, if you've any more questions, by all means, ask away. Just don't expect me to be that wise old Shell Answer Owl in the trees, 'mkay? This is a very welcoming and friendly Community, both here and in the NWN forums. Plenty of folks will be here to assist you and answer your questions. Just bear in mind, most would prefer to teach you to fish as opposed to give you a fish. That means be willing to invest time in figuring this stuff out somewhat on your own as well. If you're totally new, though, welcome -- and ask.
best regards,
dunniteowl
