For about the past week I have been working on a Mass Effect style Rainmeter Skin.  To date as far as I am aware this is the only Mass Effect styled skin for Rainmeter available.  It is centered around the orange haptic interafaces featured in Mass Effect 2 and the Illusive Man.

For those of you who are unaware of what Rainmeter is, it's a very light desktop resource display that can be used to show system usage or just make your desktop look awesome.  If you don't have it already, I would strongly recommend downloading it (It's light on resources so even older computers can use it).  It is very easy to learn and set up.

This is what my desktop currently looks like.  Not all of the displays are included in this picture, but hopefully you get the idea of what it does.

I am still putting a lot of work into this, as it is in very early development.  There is also a Mass Effect 1 HUD skin included in the download file on DeviantART, so you can check that out as well (but that part looks like crap at the moment and needs serious work).

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FREE PROGRAM "SPEEDFAN" IF YOU WANT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE TO WORK

EDIT:  HELP SETTING UP THE SKIN, FINDING WEATHER CODES, AND CHANGING THE LAUNCHER

To edit a skin, right click on it, go to "skin menu," then select "edit skin."  Your computer should open up Notepad and you will see a lot of code.

WEATHER:
First off, you have to find the weather code for your area.

1. Go to http://www.weather.com/

2. Search for your town and country (ie London, United Kingdom or New york, NY, United States)
- When your search have given you the right location you will be taken to the page where the weather is displayed. You should now look at the URL (the address bar).

3. The URL should now look something like this:
http://www.weather.c...oday/UKXX0085 (http://www.weather.c...today/USNY0996 )

4. The weather code is now in the URL. The part we are looking for is: UKXX0085 ( / USNY0996 )

5. Take the weather code and open up the config file for the weather skin as mentioned above.  You should see something like this:

Posted Image

Circled in red in the picture is where you want to put your weather code.  Then save the file, and refresh the skin (right click>skin menu>refresh skin)

LAUNCHER:

I have greatly simplified changing the application launcher for people.  You can now click the EDIT button on the skin and it will open a text file where you can change the name and path of the application in one clean, neat place.

For example, if you want Mozilla Firefox in there, click the edit button, change the name of the app to "Mozilla Firefox" and then input the path for the executable (Firefox should be C:\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\Firefox.exe)

If you run into any problems, message me or try checking the Rainmeter forums.

Brilliant, I am downloading now, i've heard of Rainmeter before but I never looked to download anything because it didn't have something like this.
Now it does. Thank you good sir!
Just a quick nooby question: How do you install it?

I am guessing you are wondering exactly how to install this specific skin to Rainmeter, rather than Rainmeter itself correct?

If so, you first have to download and extract the skin file from deviantart.  Insider the file are the wallpapers necessary to go with the skin, and two fonts that need to be installed.  To install a font you just drag and drop it into your fonts folder (usually C:\\Windows\\Fonts, you may have to restart your computer for it to take effect).

Inside of the folder you will also find two other folders labeled "Mass Effect 1 HUD" and "Mass Effect 2."  The ME1 HUD is just a teaser and not necessary.  The ME2 folder you should copy into your skins folder, the default installation path is C:\\Users\\Username\\Documents\\Rainmeter\\Skins (could be different depending on your operating system).

Once the Mass Effect 2 skin is in your skins folder, either refresh Rainmeter or restart is, and you will be able to load the skins shown above.  To load a skin you can either open Rainbrowser or right click on any Rainmeter skin on the desktop and go to >Configs>Mass Effect 2>specific skin name

Rainmeter can take several days to learn, but in the end is worth it.  Let me know if you have more problems :P

Wow very impressive, love the Cerberus Daily News tab in the corner. The layout fits the loading screens nicely, but of course this is far more interactive!

Really good work

Those are the only two skins that do not specify a skin path so I am guessing you have a different skin path than what is programmed into the files.  If you want them to show up correctly you would have to edit the config files yourself to what your specific path is.  If you need help determining the path, let me know.

How exactly do i determine the path or edit the config files?

Somehow, I've managed to get the system and the launcher to show themselves but no others. (also the launcher won't move) please help.

To determine the path, you need to find where you installed the skins folder to.  If you didn't do a custom install it should be either in the program files or your documents.  Mine, for example is

C:\\Users\\Darkstar\\Documents\\Rainmeter\\Skins

The directory where the Skins folder is stored is called the "skinspath."  To edit a config file, you right click on it, scroll to "skin menu" and then click "edit skin."  It will open up a bunch of code in Notepad.  It might look complex, but if you look closely it's pretty easy to understand.  In the launcher, for example, you can scroll down a little to find this

[Bar1]
Meter=IMAGE
ImageName=outline.png
X=150
Y=6
W=190
H=40
Path=#SKINSPATH#Mass Effect\\Mass Effect 2\\Launcher\\
Hidden=1

The part where is says Path= is where you would have to put in your own skins path.

EDIT:  Are you using Windows 7 by chance?  This can make a very big difference.

Yeah, I'm also on Windows 7.

EDIT: Because I haven't mentioned it yet, your skin is completely amazing.

No, you're definitely not screwed.  My guess would be that Windows 7 uses a different default skin path.  If so, you just need to move the Mass Effect folder you downloaded to the path.

You should try moving it to
C:\\Program Files\\Rainmeter\\Skins
and then refreshing Rainmeter

the stuff that isnt showing up are the image files, like the cerberus tab for the launcher, or the circles for the system, also no top and bottom bars

 To change the path you have to edit the config file (which you can do by >rightclick>skin menu>edit skin).  While this is not difficult, it would be very tedious to change every one.  :?

Inside the config file would look something like this:

[Bar1]

Meter=IMAGE

ImageName=outline.png

X=150

Y=6

W=190

H=40

Path=#SKINSPATH#Mass Effect\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\Launcher\\\\

Hidden=1

The path is where Rainmeter searches for the specified file.  In your case, Rainmeter is looking in the wrong path.  Be sure that the Mass Effect 2 folder containing everything is within the Mass Effect folder (like where it says in Path= above), and each subfolder should not have been moved.

This is seriously just about the coolest thing ever. Thank you so much for sharing!

Using the fonts you provided, I reskinned StarDock accordingly, and this is my new and awesome desktop.

 You can customise the App Launcher to get a few programs there.  The programs on top however are part of a different program called ObjectDock.
The icon pack I used for ObjectDock is called "Devine Icon Pack" but there are thousands of packs out there so you could probably find a better one.
