First and foremost before I install this thing (which will likely be after many playthroughs), can I use MSSQL 2k8 Std x64? I will need it to work on projects from home anyway, and I'd rather not have two instances of SQL running.

If so, what are the caveats do I need to keep in mind?

If unknown, can I prevent the installer from installing its MSSQL Express version so I can mess with the settings manually?

If not, is there a version out there without MSSQL pre-packaged in the installer?
If not, why not? :P

You can have both installed but the toolset wants 2005 database. So unless your good enough in setting it up to work in compability I suggest you have both installed.

I think I'll give it a miss then. Work's more important than the toolset, and as I mentioned, I'd rather not have two instances of SQL running.

I have SQL 2008 Express installed and it seems to work ok. (though it required restoring the database manually from included backup, it is addressed in the toolset wiki) You can skip installation of the 2005 version bundled with the toolkit, there's a checkbox for that in the installer.

Reports are that it works with SQL2008 just fine. You may need to put the database in "Type 90" mode, which is SQL2005 compatability. You'll find it in the properties of the database itself, but you will likely need the 2K8 Management Studio Express.

I am running against SQL 2008 Enterprise x64, with no problems. If you restore the backup in tools\\dbbak to a new database, it'll even automatically set the compatibility level to 2005 ("type 90") for you. The installer does have an option to provide your own DB settings.

That's good to know. The more non-Express SQL experience I get, the better. I'll definitely tinker with it, then. 2008 R2 is at the starting gate. Maybe it'll be out by the time I start tinkering.
