The Fallout: NV advertisement mocking JRPGs

Bioware has been critizing JRPGs for a while, and as far as we know, Bioware games are not as successful as Bethesdas games in Japan. I think it is time for Bioware to face the J-market seriously now.

Perhaps a better term for the jRPG would be "interactive" novel or movie. You have slight control over the action but the story progresses according to a set a path.

However, what bothers me is that Bethesda is able to attract the niche of WRPG users in Japan, while Bioware seems not willing/able to do so.

I don't see that as a problem. BioWare doesn't have to appeal to every audience, just as Bethesda does not.

JRPGs had a major impact on my gaming. Just as much as Baldur's Gate II, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout, ect did. Perhaps even more. They are different from WRPGs, but different is not the same as lacking in value.

Not clever funny or creative at all.
C'mon Bethesda, put some effort into it!

I think this is a bit of a sad move by Bethesda's PR/Promotions department (assuming they're doing the PR/Promotions for Obsidian's New Vegas). I wouldn't be impressed, for want of a better word, if a Japanese company said that about Western games, so I doubt they're impressed a Western company is saying that about Japanese games.

I knew Bethesda were publishing it (after all, they do own the license), but I wasn't sure if they were doing the marketing too.Seagloom wrote...
Bethesda Softworks is publishing Fallout: New Vegas. Marketing is traditionally handled by the publisher. I wasn't positive about it when writing my post. Call it an educated guess.

The point is How is the Gaming Taste of Japanese gamers, so that Bethesda would be successful there or not.

I see the marketing department at Bethesda Softworks decided to poke a hornet's nest. This sort of ad is nothing new, but disappointing nonetheless. I'm not fond of the mock competition approach to advertising. It just comes across as juvenile. Personally, I prefer western made RPGs. However, my first RPG was Final Fantasy II (IV). JRPGs are what exposed me to this genre. Without them I wouldn't be here, and I would have missed a lot of great stories. Final Fantasy III (VI), Chrono Trigger, the Lunar games, Grandia, Septerra Core, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Breath of Fire and countless others...

I'm about 97% in agreement with this.
My first cRPG was actually Bard's Tale, and it was probably years after that when I was first introduced to a Final Fantasy (also FF 2) and I still, to this day, consider FF 3 / 6 to be one of the best cRPG stories I ever experienced. Oddly enough, outside of FF 3 and 7, and now 13, I've not played hardly ANY JRPGs.
That doesn't mean I feel the need to mock them.
Is this really necessary? Does everything have to boil down to immature "us vs. them" inanity? The sports mentality? The "mine is bigger than yours" stupidity?
Go ahead and get your chuckles, Bethesda, and know that you entertained a small portion of your prejudiced fan-base while simultaneously alienating a large swath of potential customers.

It's quite annoying to see the Fallout ad go down the predictable path of mocking jRPGs.

theres just so many things wrong with Fallout in Japan. As for Bethesda, Bethesda Corp has made a very recent (past 6 months) push to grow its brand, its publishing of 3rd party titles and of course, its relationship with the legendary John Carmack @ Id Studios.
