There are two main ways to put NWN onto a windows 7 or Vista machine.
If you have a new machine as well as your old machine and a home network or flash drive etc and simply want to transfer your nwn to the new machine, then the easiest thing to do is use windows explorer to copy from the old machine to the new, and then delete it from the old machine. You keep all your settings and everything using this method. (Only use this method if your NWN is patched and working perfectly)
1. On the win 7 machine, use windows explorer to find your NWN install on your old machine and drag and drop the complete nwn folder to c drive on your new machine.
2. In the nwn folder find nwnmain.exe and nwn.exe.
3. Right click on these and select properties. Set them to run with full permissions, as administrator and under compatibility mode windows XP service pack 2 or 3. (If your old machine was vista, then this has probably already been done, but check anyway!)
4. (If you want a desktop shortcut) Right click on nwnmain.exe and create a shortcut. Drag and drop this to your desktop.
5. Update your drivers for video and sound. (go to the manufacturers of your cards' support pages. Laptop support pages can be very behind the times)
If you wish to install from the disk(s) or from GOG or from Impulse
1. Install game using a custom install. When you are given the path to the install folder, change the path using the browse folder button so that it is NOT installed in 'programs (x86)', but directly on C drive. Do not make any shortcuts during the install process.
2. (Diamond edition disc only) Run the patch on the disk.
3. (Disk install only) Go to the patch page (link currently not working. See updates below for patch links) and download the correct 1.69 critical rebuild and install it. (Both GOG and Impulse versions are correctly patched).
4. Open NWN folder and find nwnmain.exe and nwn.exe.
5. Right click on these and select properties. Set them to run with full permissions, as administrator and under compatibility mode windows XP service pack 2 or 3.
6. (If you want a desktop shortcut) Right click on nwnmain.exe and create a shortcut. Drag and drop this to your desktop.
7. Update your drivers for video and sound. (go to the manufacturers of your cards' support pages. Laptop support pages can be very behind the times)
Good Luck

The 1.69 patch never got released for languages other than English, so you will have to go with the English patch for 1.69. Then download the community provided 1.69 dialog.tlk French version or German version and replace the English version provided by the 1.69 patch - et voilà!
GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING ADVICE FROM THE COMMUNITY
All users: All issues.
Get the latest drivers for both video AND sound. Don't miss this out, it's vital.
Both AMD and nVidea have recently released drivers which are reported as being far superior to any before for NWN.
Realtek sound devices have a notorious reputation for causing issues. The latest drivers do make a HUGE difference.
All windows users: All issues.
Note on the compatibility tab under properties: The options "Disable visual themes", "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable display scaling" may improve
your performance or help troubleshoot issues. It depends on your exact
setup. Most users can leave these alone, but experimenting with them
shoudn't harm your machine.
All users: stuttering/low FPS
1. turn off Shiny water in the video options setting
Vista users: For any performance issue/crashing
1. Find nwnplayer.ini in your main install folder (which should be c:/neverwinter nights/nwn ) and open it with notepad.
2. Find the line "Client CPU Affinity=0" in the "[Game Options]" section.
3. Change the "0" to "1"
4. If that doesn't work, experiment with different values in the same line. I have seen lots of different numbers given as advice and one of our vista computers needed it set to -2, but BW reccommends 1.
nVidea users: Stuttering/low FPS
1. Go to nVidea control panel and turn off (or experiment if it is already off) Threaded Optimization.
ATI users: Stuttering/ low FPS
1. Go to catalyst control centre and experiment with settings on the AI.
(Turning it off sometimes helps FPS but may make your character disappear. You can re-enable your character visuals ingame by turning "show environmental effects on character" off.
Brand new windows computers
1. Check if you have direct X 9 installed. download link
Win7/Vista users: Any issue
Pstemarie wrote...
Shia, one thing you might want to add is disabling User Account Control (UAC) before installing. Microsoft recommends doing this for both Win 7 and Vista users that intend to run software designed for XP on the new platforms.
Huge thanks to all these community members for providing the links and advice and keeping the game and community alive.
Good Luck and have fun [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]
