Hi all, I have been following the installation guide in front and finally success! Yay and thank you! However I have question about Patch 1.69. I own the Diamond box so do I need to download and install this patch?

Yes.

2. (Diamond edition disc only) Run the patch on the disk.
3. (Disk install only) Go to the patch page (link currently not working. See updates below for patch links) and download the correct 1.69 critical rebuild and install it. (Both GOG and Impulse versions are correctly patched).

So you need to run the patch on the disk and then the 1.69.

Oh I skipped step no3 because I though it is for those owning disk other than Diamond edition. So now I have already played the game if I install the new patch will it jeopardize my save game? Or I need to reinstall the whole thing? Sorry I have not played pc game for like many many many years!

UPDATE 4 : With Kudos and thanks to Lightfoot8. FOR WINDOWS INSTALLS NEEDING 1.69

Critical rebuild downloads for the final patch (1.69). These are for the English game running under Windows.

If Hordes of the Underdark is installed
If Shadows of Undrentide is installed, but Hordes of the Underdark is not
If neither expansion is installed

So I need to install one of this section right? as I am window user.

Shia, one thing you might want to add
is disabling User Account Control (UAC) before installing. Microsoft
recommends doing this for both Win 7 and Vista users that intend to run
software designed for XP on the new platforms.

They do? I and my friends have never had to do that to get NWN working and I've never seen it offered as advice before... not that I doubt your sincerity in offering this, I just feel uncomfortable adding info I haven't managed to confirm to the main post. I think I'll quote you under an "alternative advice section"

This is the original text from the setting window for UAC:

Not recommended. Choose this only if you need to use programs that are not certified for Windows 7 because they do not support User Account Control

So while its not explicitly recommended, Microsoft does acknowledge that UAC should be turned off for older programs - which would include NWN. When you dig deeper into UAC all it does when disabled is allow any program to execute with administrator rights - as it was in XP.

I help maintain a network where I work that has 32 computers running Windows 7 and 48 running Windows XP. We had all kinds of software issues with the Windows 7 computers so we called in outside support. The first thing their technician did was turn off UAC. With just that one move our software problem list disintegrated.

Oh! But there are other versions of the game that use disks (In EU it is called deluxe and has less issues than the US one) and they all need the patch. Only Diamond requires you run the patch on the disk b4 running the 1.69 patch.

... but yes, changing the cersion will make your saves unplayable ... IIRC (anyone care to confirm or deny that? )

Soooo best is finish your game and then patch to 1.69. Choose the patch that says windows and HotU.

Hope that helps.

Have fun :)

@ Pstmarie: I added a general advice section and included yours :)

hello, having limited success with getting nwn to run.

i updated drivers which gave me some head way but now it crashes the moment pavel moves to enage in conversation.

running windows vista, and as far as i can tell i followed the guide to the letter.

i have had some additional unrelated nwn issues since updating nvidia drivers, so this may possibly be the problem but i am unsure.

any suggestions would be greatfull.

Do you have the Heroes Edition by chance, buggaluggs?

The paval related crash is due to missing files that were not put on the instalation CDs.

As such, since the old Bioware forum is gone, I'm unable to locate the download link for these missing files.

EDIT: Found it on the support site.

http://supportfiles....m/nwn/convo.zip

Uncompress the related files in convo.zip to your install \\data directory.

Example:

G:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights\\Data

FP!

Hi Shia and all present,
I (as with all here) am experiencing a compatibility issue with my new Windows 7 machine and Diamond edition. I went into properties of both NWN.exe and NWNmain.exe - XP SP2 - Administrator Full Permission. And the game will not run. Wondering if anyone can help me get up and running. I'm a new player and with moderate Computer skills trying to improve my NWN skills so I can enjoy gaming with you all. Thanks for your guidance, Mr. Ed =)

Let me make a suggestion... repost your problem as a separate topic with suitable title in this (the Tech Support) forum with your full system and installation specs (Check the "Start Here" sticky).   It will receive faster attention than one buried in a reference thread.

Shia's Win7/Vista thread was intended as a reference sticky rather than to address individual issues.  However, should you uncover a useful tip that has not been documented here, at that point repost the resolution here for others to use.

Hi there, I also have the diamond edition and am replaying the game with my computer upgraded to Windows 7. It would not run until I loaded the latest patch - even so I had trouble with my mouse being sluggish and unresponsive - configuring the game as XP compatible and playing as administrator has helped a lot though my wayward mouse still drives me crazy at times. The annoying thing is that my computer is so much more powerful and my video card so much better than what I had when I first played the game. I am not technically too skilled when it comes to computers but can follow simple instructions. I do struggle with the American reducing everything to a series of letters though I have finally sussed out what OC means!

I have a few additions/suggestions to this post since I just got the Neverwinter Nights Complete version which has both NWN Diamond, and a NWN2 Compilations on it. link if curious: http://www.amazon.co...c/dp/B005JQ05RS

The NWN version included on the DVD has the same issues as the GoG version. You need to download and run the 1.69 patch from bioware for it otherwise you get the same texture problems.

Also, I don't know if its been mentioned yet, but to get the videos running on an ATI/Win 7/64 bit machine and reduce some compatability issues you have to:
1. Right click on nwnmain.exe in the folder and select properties. Then Disable visual themes and disable desktop composition under the compatablity tab.
2 (maybe). Select disable scaling on high dpi images and set the compatability mode for Windows XP SP2
3. Download a fixed blink32.dll from http://www.mediafire...binkw32_ati.zip
4. Back up the old blink32.dll in the Neverwinter Nights folder by renaming it, (The suggestion from ATI was blink32_ati.dll.
5. Extract this file to the main folder.
6. Open nwn.ini and go to display settings and change SafeMovies=0 to SafeMovies=1.
Notes: Since shiny water is unsupported by ati, you should probably disable it.

Of course I may have just dumped all this in the wrong topic, except for the first comment.

I tried downloading the HotU patch from the links on this forum, and also from the NWN Community Site, unfortunately, they both link to the files.bioware.com versions and broke on the final corruption check.

However, I did manage to download and update successfully from NWvault. Enjoy.

That's strange.  XP is usually fairly trouble-free and reliable needing few or no tweaks.

This topic is not intended to solve general problems and is dedicated to Vista/Win7 idiosyncrasies only. I suggest you post your own problem topic and furnish your game version, system, hardware and driver specs as outlined in the "Start Here" sticky to give folks a fair chance to help you.  If it's integrated graphics and/or sound like on some notebooks/laptops make that clear as well.  Clearly define all you have tried so far to get the game to run.

Just wanted to add my experience, hopefully can save someone else some headaches.

Early on in installation, you are asked whether or not you would like to install the texture packs, and there are check boxes for 16 meg, 32 meg, and 64 meg. Note that you don't have to check any of them. Not sure what in game difference that they would make, assume that you might get a more visually appealing experience if you can run the highest setting. So I opted to install all of them.

Each time I started the game, got through the gamespy server selection, could even log onto a server and select a character (as these were servers I have played on and have characters in the server vaults). Then, while loading the module, loaded to about 85% within a second but then just hung there. Loadscreen displayed, but the progress bar frozen at about 85%, just hanging.

I tried lots of things including most of the solutions suggested above, one at a time for the most part. What fixed it for me was one or two of the following (I did them both at the same time so not sure which did it for me):
1.) uninstalled McAfee virus software (it was bogging down my system anyway, I prefer Avast)
and
2.) I ran nwnconfig.exe.
Clicked on "change"
Then was able to select 16 meg texture pack (changed it from the 64 meg down to 16)

That did it for me.
Hope this helps someone.

Just to give also my experience on this subject:

Configuration is AMD E350 (HD6310 integrated) + 3GB ram.
Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 32 Bits
NwN + SoU + Hotu (Diamond), patched in 1.69

Unable to run nwn without checking "compatiblity mode XP-SP3 or SP2",

With latest AMD drivers catalyst 12.3: Lags in game even at very low settings, nearly unplayable,
With AMD drivers catalyst 11.4: The game just runs fine with good settings (1366x768, 64MB texture pack, shadows on...), no more lags.

Cheers,

Edit: Ah, and removed "shiny water" option of course.

This thread is more of a guide and links resource than an individual problem-solving one, so I recommend that you post your own topic describing your full specs as nicely listed in the tech "Start Here" and any accomdations you may have already tried (like disabling sound, shiny water, etc.).  Be as specific as possible so the community can grasp the clearest "picture" possible and then be patient.  The remaining members may be few in number but are probably the most dedicated folks around.  The NWN Complete edition seems to have presented a unique subset of issues so it may take a bit longer than normal to resolve your problems.  Hang in there!

I'd try making a Games folder (or whatever you want to name it) and installing NWN in there.

Hi all, I installed before reading this guide and I skipped the part where you install the patch on the diamond disc, and I just went straight to installing the 1.69 patch. I haven't noticed any ill effects from doing this. Should I expect any in the future? What is the reason for installing the intermediate patch on the disc? Isn't the 1.69 patch a comprehensive one?

Also, I had the jittering problem and I read somewhere else that I should set CPU affinity to -2 to fix it. I did that and it worked, even though I don't know what the -2 setting does.

One last problem that i am having is that once in a while when I start the game, it crashes and I get a small window error message that says "Neverwinter Nights has stopped working" I just end the program and try again and that usually works.

TBH, I never installed the patch manually off of Diamond. The installation just did it automatically.  When I went to play the game the first time, the welcome screen reported that it was running at v1.66.

What you need to keep in mind is that diferent configurations and especially different OS versions may call routines just slightly different.  The v1.66 to v1.69 recommendation came about after many failed installations "forced" this particular tenet.  In my own situation, the ONLY way I was able to get v1.69 to install properly was to first install v1.68, with both patches applied as critical rebuild versions... and that routine worked great.  I have no clue if the v1.66 included on the Diamond DVD was a critical rebuild or just a simple update of the former version.

Also, I had the jittering problem and I read somewhere else that I should set CPU affinity to -2 to fix it. I did that and it worked, even though I don't know what the -2 setting does.

Congratulations!  That's the benefit of any reliable procedure... no insight is needed to succeed. ;)

I would suspect an inadvertent corrupt file, an incomplete one or a driver issue.  It depends on how annoying the crashing becomes as to whether you are willing to experiment further.  If so, document EXACTLY the procedure and settings you used to get it to operate as well as it does now just in case.  You may know better if/when you start to add customizations (like CEP) that push the rendering capacity farther than the vanilla game.

Hi there. I have been playing NWN1 since release but have experienced several lulls (breaks if you will) during my stints. Unfortunately, I have lost my game discs but my CD keys should still be registered to this account. I remember on the old nwn.bioware.com website, there was a way I could retrieve them.

However, I find myself currently wanting to play NWN but don't have any way to install the game (no discs). Does Bioware/EA not support a way to download the game clients and retrieve my old CD Keys? Other developers (Blizzard comes to mind) support this level of service and I find it surprising that Bioware/EA is moving away from this format.

Unless I'm missing something of course.

Significantly off-topic in a "How-to-install-NWN" thread, but nonetheless...

Once Bioware was absorbed into EA the legacy site was closed along with all services and the substantial knowledge base.  "This account" on BSN is not the one you typed your keys into many, many moons ago. Apparently, EA decided 10 years was long enough to support NWN and have refocused their resources (including whoever is left from the original Bioware staff) in other ventures. In short, when the NWN discs and keys are gone, they are gone for good, unless one is capable of navigating the space-time continuum.

Many folks in a similar situation simply DL a copy of the Diamond version from GoG or similar game vending site.  The standard cost is around 10USD but there are occasionally promotions that offer even better bargains.  No need to shop on Ebay that way.
