Significantly off-topic in a "How-to-install-NWN" thread, but nonetheless...Jyro X wrote...
Hi there. I have been playing NWN1 since release but have experienced several lulls (breaks if you will) during my stints. Unfortunately, I have lost my game discs but my CD keys should still be registered to this account. I remember on the old nwn.bioware.com website, there was a way I could retrieve them.
However, I find myself currently wanting to play NWN but don't have any way to install the game (no discs). Does Bioware/EA not support a way to download the game clients and retrieve my old CD Keys? Other developers (Blizzard comes to mind) support this level of service and I find it surprising that Bioware/EA is moving away from this format.
Unless I'm missing something of course.
Once Bioware was absorbed into EA the legacy site was closed along with all services and the substantial knowledge base. "This account" on BSN is not the one you typed your keys into many, many moons ago. Apparently, EA decided 10 years was long enough to support NWN and have refocused their resources (including whoever is left from the original Bioware staff) in other ventures. In short, when the NWN discs and keys are gone, they are gone for good, unless one is capable of navigating the space-time continuum.
Many folks in a similar situation simply DL a copy of the Diamond version from GoG or similar game vending site. The standard cost is around 10USD but there are occasionally promotions that offer even better bargains. No need to shop on Ebay that way.

Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, ATI HD 5800, 12 gigs of RAM, Desktop, full admin rights, ran DVD as admin = installation not happening.
During installation from DVD, the initial splash screen to install would appear with music. After clicking to install, the splash screen would disappear. The following error would be shown:
"Access to %1 has been restricted by your Administrator by policy rule %2."
I tried everything listed at the beginning of this thread, which didn't work. I soon found this:
"Software Restriction Policy Notification displays a message to the user and writes an event to the event log when the user attempts to run a program
that is not allowed by the policy. If the software restriction policy is enforced on all users, then messages will be displayed to both standard users and administrators. If the policy is enforced on all users except local administrators, then users logged on with administrative credentials will not be notified
as the policy will not apply to the programs that they run.
If the policy is enforced on all users and the Basic User default security level is selected, local administrators may not be able to run programs that require administrative credentials unless those programs are specifically excluded from the rule.
Right click on the software installation file and click on “Run as administrator”.
If that doesn’t help, then follow these steps:
1. Click on start and then click control Panel.
2. Open Administrative Tools.
3. Open Local Security Settings.
4. Click Software Restriction Policies.
5. If no software restrictions are defined, right click the Software Restriction Policies node and select New Software Restriction Policy
6. Double click Enforcement
7. Select "All users except local administrators"
8. Click OK
9. Reboot the computer."
(from here)
It worked! I was able to install. All good, now.
*note: I had no software restrictions defined (5 above)*

I've recently purchased the Diamond Edition of NWN 1 from GOG.com and can't seem to get it going on Windows 7. The game itself runs but the FPS is very low - almost less than 1. I have a Dell Studio 1537 with a dual core Intel, 4 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 3400 and an integrated AMD Audio. I tried to run it in a compatibility mode (XP SP 3 and 2), as well as play with the other options in this properties tab. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!
Best wishes,
Yulian
P.S. Additional specs: I run a 32bit Windows 7. I tried to update all drivers to the newest version.

This is a "How-to-" thread. I suggest you post your question as a dedicated topic in this (Self-help Tech) forum with as descriptibve a title as possible. Be certain to post your full system & hardware specs as recommended in the Start Here sticky when you do. It will give the community a running start to help analyze the possible source(s) of your problem.BGOrion wrote...

Just off the top of my head, I highly recommend you DL & apply the Critical Rebuild for v1.69. The GoG v1.69 patch is not that reliable according to others. Integrated components are often insufficient for games that use OpenGL but I'd at least investigate the more obvious possibilities (like driver versions) first.

I've been following the posted guide as best as I can figure to the letter, installing with UAC deactivated, using the appropriate critical rebuilds, running under compatibility mode Windows XP service pack 2, making .ini file changes here and there, and so on and so forth.
despite my efforts however, every time I start the game through the NWMain.exe, or NWN.exe files, after the first splash screen comes up the game immediately crashes and I recieve the default Windows "A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly" error log.
running Vista, any other hardware or software questions, I'd be happy to answer.
I'm out of ideas and any help would be sincerely appreciated!

The link for the fixed bink file wasn't working but I found a new one:
http://www.mediafire...nkw32_ati-2.zip
I'll repeat the instructions just in case:
1. In NWN folder, name the old "binkw32.dll" to "binkw32_ati.dll"
2. Extract the new "binkw32.dll" into NWN folder.
3. Enjoy!
This fixed the movies in game where before i would only see a black screen, now I can actually see the movies, and they are also fixed in the menu.
I have Win 7 64 bit with a 5700 Ati graphics card.
Good luck to all you people enjoying Neverwinter Nights!

At first it was the driver fail issue (which I've also had with NWN2 but not quite as drastic). Most people said this was connected to a program that runs with nvidia drivers - PowerMizer. I found a youtube tutorial on how to disable it and followed that.
What ended up happening was instead of driver fails I now get a full system crash. As in my Win 7 (64 bit) just reboots randomly when I'm playing.
I've done everything that I could find suggested: the core affinity thing, the account management, the power management and threading via nvidia controls. And of course all the basic stuff like re-installing with admin permission, giving admin permission to the exe files and running them in compatibility with Win Xp sp3.
I installed the critical rebuild patch for HotU from ign's nwnvault.
At this point I don't even know what to do. I thought about just installing Windows Xp additionally just for this game, but considering compatibility mode doesn't work, will that even help?
Anyway, I'm stumped. And this is irritating to put it mildly. I'm willing to install an older OS for this, but I don't have any old hardware to run this on. And with all these cumbersome fixes, I'm still unable to play more than 3 minutes in a row.
I'll do some more testing when I can but I must say this crap severely cripples my motivation to push forward.
I'd welcome any input or advice anyone has for this situation.
*sigh*

Tried compatibiltiy mode with sp2 rather than sp3.
Tried the PowerMizer fix both with 64 and 32 bit words in registry. ( )
Both the failing drivers and the system crash persist however. I honestly can't even tell if there's a pattern when one or the other happens. Sometimes the driver fails and the game crashes, sometimes I just get a random reboot of the system.
The only options I have yet to try is to fiddle with the game video options (the much cited "shiny water" is turned off for me) and to try and find another OpenGL driver version.
I have NEVER had this much problems with any game ever in roughly 14 years of gaming.
Again, any advice would be appreciated.

5. Right click on these and select properties. Set them to run with full permissions, as administrator and under compatibility mode windows XP service pack 2 or 3.
I have also tried to follow the directions in the patch itself, I copied, then removed the contents of the override directory but I don't know how to unpack the file using the stated command.
2. Remove the BioWare-supplied contents of your override directory. If you
have not placed any files in this directory yourself, you can do
rm -f override/*
You may wish to backup your override directory if you plan to revert to
an earlier version at some point.
3. Unpack the file using the command
tar -xzf English_linuxclient168_orig.tar.gz
Could someone give me an easier way to apply the patch. I am at a total loss.

Do you already have NwN installed in that directory? Where did the install come from? GoG? Diamond Edition? DnD Complete? This matters somewhat.stormyfc wrote...
I have downloaded the patch I require for my version of NWN. I am running Win7. I placed the file in my directory C:NeverwinterNights.
Before answering your other questions I highly recommend whatever the source of your NwN, that you apply the 1.69 critical patch. Just download it and run it.
If you right-click on an app (like nwmain.exe) you should get a context menu like this:I do not know how to install it. I have read the directions on this site that says to find nwmain.exe and right click on it but cannot find anywhere where it lets me run with full permission..
5. Right click on these and select properties. Set them to run with full permissions, as administrator and under compatibility mode windows XP service pack 2 or 3.

(only probably a lot simpler :-P ).
At the bottom is the "Properties" link. Click that and you should see a "compatability" tab in the properties dialogue:

Click the check box for "Run as Administrator" (near the bottom) and "Run this program in compatibility mode" near the top. Set the compatibility mode to XP.
That bit looks like the patch for linux, version 1.68. Not at all what you want.I have also tried to follow the directions in the patch itself, I copied, then removed the contents of the override directory but I don't know how to unpack the file using the stated command.
2. Remove the BioWare-supplied contents of your override directory. If you

Try the two bits above and let us know what happened. We'll get you in :-)
Just might take a little untangling...

What does custom install mean? I try to run Disk 1, it asks for the Play Disk then after whirring in the drive, nothing.

It means you should be prompted to chose where you want the game installed and what peripheral components you want included in the installation (like GameSpy, Toolset. etc. IIRC).Rogue1618 wrote...

I recommend you start your own topic in this subforum, though. This sticky was intended more as a quick reference "How-to" thread than a problem-solving one (though several members have decided to use it that way).
When you create your new topic, please be sure to include as much information as you can about your configuration (OS, game version, etc.) as outlined in the "Start Here" sticky at the top of this forum. It will give a clearer picture of what you are dealing with so that others can help you easier and avoid sending you on a wild goose chase.
With just what you have provided so far, it could be a drive read problem in which case you could copy the contents of the CD onto your hard drive and run the installation from there, assuming that the drive can even read the contents at all, that is.
But please, start your own topic to speed assistance along. Good luck!

This is the most recent method for installing the GOG or Impulse Editions of NWN Diamond on Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1
- Install game using a custom install. When you are given the path to the install folder, change the path (using the "Browse Folders" button) to c://NeverwinterNights/NWN. Do NOT make any shortcuts during the install process.
- Download and install the 1.69 Critical Rebuild (see link for patch below).
- Open the NWN folder and find nwnmain.exe, nwtoolset.exe and nwn.exe.
- Right click on these and select properties. Click on the "Change Settings for All Users" button. When that window pops up, check "Run in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows XP Service Pack 3" AND check "Run this program as an administrator."
- If you want a desktop shortcut, right click on nwnmain.exe and create a shortcut. Drag and drop this to your desktop.
- Update your drivers for video and sound. (go to the manufacturers of your cards' support pages. Laptop support pages can be very behind the times).
Note 1: Try setting the game to "Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2" if you have issues running the game after installation.
Note 2 : Some users can run the Aurora Toolset (nwtoolset.exe) without compatibility or administrator modes.
Download the 1.69 Critical Rebuild
Open GL Issues
I have done this on my own system and it resolved ALL graphics related issues that were occurring for me. Other users report various mileage with this solution:
Download and install the Direct X 9.0c SDK from Microsoft
This will install several components that are necessary for correct performance under Open GL. If prompted to overwrite existing files with an older version - I never was - CLICK "NO."
