In this day&age, a game made with something not unlike Infinity engine could really stand out.
Beautiful, hand drawn maps can be so much more impressive and fresh than anything the slightly worn, WoW-esque over the shoulder 3d can deliver. Icewind Dale has a number of areas that remind more of stylish paintings than mere zones. Games cloning look and feel of WoW can't quite achieve the same aesthetically pleasing, timeless effect. Ofc, I'm not claiming WoW or Dragonage would be unenjoyable by default. It's just terribly boring to end up using same goddamned UI and camera angles in every single RPG, MMO or otherwise.
were they hand-drawn? from their looks I thought they were pre-rendered but of very good quality.
Edit: meh going through text too fast, regarding maps yes, they do look hand-drawn to me as well
The thing with having a game of this scope and detail today is that in IE-days, it was probably cheaper to create massive worlds with so many joinable NPCs and non-joinable ones, so many lines of dialogue etc.
Today with 3D and voiceover becoming industry standards, if someone were to put all this effort, my guess is that he'd go for an mmo, much like Blizzard did with WoW, which nonetheless I find pretty awesome.
You never know ofc, I hope as well BG III comes out and is as glorious but I'd be happy even if it came out and its size was in the same scale as today's single player RPGs.
