In this day&age, a game made with something not unlike Infinity engine could really stand out.

Beautiful, hand drawn maps can be so much more impressive and fresh  than anything the slightly worn, WoW-esque over the shoulder 3d can deliver. Icewind Dale has a number of areas that remind more of stylish paintings than mere zones. Games cloning look and feel of WoW can't quite achieve the same aesthetically pleasing, timeless effect. Ofc, I'm not claiming  WoW or Dragonage would be unenjoyable by default. It's just terribly boring to end up using same goddamned UI and camera angles in every single RPG, MMO or otherwise.

were they hand-drawn? from their looks I thought they were pre-rendered but of very good quality.
Edit: meh going through text too fast, regarding maps yes, they do look hand-drawn to me as well

The thing with having a game of this scope and detail today is that in IE-days, it was probably cheaper to create massive worlds with so many joinable NPCs and non-joinable ones, so many lines of dialogue etc.

Today with 3D and voiceover becoming industry standards, if someone were to put all this effort, my guess is that he'd go for an mmo, much like Blizzard did with WoW, which nonetheless I find pretty awesome.

You never know ofc, I hope as well BG III comes out and is as glorious but I'd be happy even if it came out and its size was in the same scale as today's single player RPGs.

From Game Banshee, it's 2 months old.

GB: Have you been having anymore discussions with Atari? I know at one time you mentioned to me off the record that maybe you were in negotiations about making a third installment to our favorite D&D game...

Feargus: Well you know, it’s one of those things. I constantly call and contact everybody, we have what we think is an awesome pitch for Baldur’s Gate III. We continue to talk to people and talk to Atari, and talk to Hasbro, and have been trying to figure it out. I would love to make it.

GB: Have you ever thought about bypassing all of that and not even using a license? You know, just go with D20 or the OGL ruleset and just create your own RPG?

Feargus: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s funny you should mention that. We’ve been talking about that recently and I need to call them up to ask the question about whether D20 is encumbered by all of the stuff going on or not. But it would be a cool thing to use D20. I actually checked the other day whether the open gaming license covers 4th Edition D20 and it does.

Someone will use BG tilte eventually. As long as it will be top quality cRPG, I'm fine with it.

So long as they remember that xvarts are worth 15XP per head I'm game.

I find it interesting that this "BG3" ghost has been around for almost as long as DNF, only without anybody trying to convince us that they were actually working on it. Do you think blondie will make an appearance if this game is ever to be developed?

*Sigh*

It's like discussing an attempt to dig up everyone's dearly beloved relative to be exploited by somebody who has no connection.

Funny that you mention it, 20 hours ago new rumor about DNF appeared :D

One issue that comes up is that how can you have a balanced game with a bunch of level 30+ characters. Magic will dominate, and the game might resemble  a bunch of demigods tossing asteroids at each other.

One suggestion that was made on the old forums was "BG: The Next Generation"!
We know that Aerie, Cernd and Viconia were fertile, why not Nalia and Jaheira? You would think that HaerDalis and Edwin have offspring scattered all over the place, and Minsc may not have even noticed that he got Dynaheer pregnant. You could have "guest appearences" by revered elders like Anomen and Mazzy, and surely one of Keldorn's daughters would want to take up his 2HS after his heroic end.

To me the real problem (besides all the IP ownership hassles) would be coming up with a new epic quest that would bring together these level 1 offspring from all over the sword coast (with a few of their parent's favorite weapons) and keep them together for a long, long, long time. Something like destroying the Twisted Rune, or going after Lloth just doesn't cut it.

Edwin may even have carried out a child himself.

But would you really want to play a level 1 paladin with a +6 weapon? Is that really a balanced alternative to level 30 characters (fighting Cyric and Lolth because... well, just because)?

Pfft.

They STILL talk about BG3 ?

FYI, BG is finished with ToB ... AD&D is finished, too.

Pretty pointless to still discuss it.

What I'm interested in would be someone making a good D&D4 game so I can try that system out for a bit.

That, and another expansion for NWN2 so I can finally get my Mystic Theurge PrC. Oh, and Combat Reflexes, too.

BG is a big branding name, it makes sense they think about reviving it. Besides this chat from Obsidian devs, Atari has said so as well, in '08. Of course we haven't seen any of this materialize yet, but who can tell what their near term plans are.

Yes the Bhaalspawn story is finished, however, I'm sure they can come up with something connected to it, after all they do have good writers.

Not sure, of course a BG III game may come out and be a disappointment, it also may come out and be good, it even may not come out at all. Still, interviews like that are bound to generate interest.

Yes, any D&D4 game would also be cool.

I suggest it only because "family weapons" would provide some sort of more substantial link between BG2 and BG3 than just  giving NPCs names like Manfred fitzMinsc and recycling the cities of Baldurs Gate and Amn. The weapons could always be dumbed down to +3 or +4 using the excuse that the passage of time has weakened their magic.

But would Manfred want a space hamster or an ice weasel? Image IPB
