Tactics are as varied as players in strategy games. Everyone has diffrent preferences and diffrent styles of play, share them here! what tactics do you *always* use? (by tactics i mean the orders that you set up in the tactics screen, I.E. Sten:health less than 50% use least powerfull health pultice) feel free to go a step further and designate what armor types you use for what types of characters.

For me when the game first starts i get two things setup in the tactics menu immediately. First i get my party to focus fire on one party member, then i setup when to use pultices so i don't have to hover around them all the time or pause everytime they need a quick lesser pultice.

First i always have all of my party members assist the main melee DPS, then i tell everyone to use the least powerfull health pultice when their health reaches less than 25% in the beginning.

This doesn't go through pultices nearly as fast as you would assume. In the beginning some pultices are used (of course) but i have never actually run out of pultices.

Beyond that all i add are healer tactics and up the point at which they use a lesser pultice. after i get access to heal and taunt i put their healing requirement up to less than 50%, by this time enemies have skills that can easily take 25% of health, killing party members before they can heal, and the heal skill insures my tank never falls below 50% unless it is a difficult battle, in which case, the lesser pultice use is warrented.
healer tactics depend on who is doing the healing.

If it's morrigan first i get heal, set to heal the tank once his health is less than 90% (so yes pretty much rapid healing) then i get forcefield, i used to think it was a cheap spell but i didn't know the thing only lasts 15 seconds, its a life saver sure but its not nearly as game breaking as i thought itd be.

With forcefield i set to use on the main tank when his health is less then 75%, by this point pultices are all but a thing of the past for most battles as long as the tank keeps aggro.

Regeneration i set to use on any ally that has less then 90% health. most of the time thats my tank because he keeps aggro.

If its wynn its similar but the way i set up the spirit healer tactics are, group heal if main tank is less then 75% health, cast lifeward if ally is less then 50% health.

Then i set the same forcefield tactic when she gets taught that.
My decision on armor is based on pros and cons and comes out to this

Rogue Archer DPS - light armor
Rogue melee/Warrior DPS - medium armor
Off tank - heavy armor
Main tank - Massive (unless i can't find massive then heavy).

This insures the only people getting attention are my tank or, at the worst, an off tank.

With this set up i have literally put the controller down and beat the flame demon encounter, the high dragon, and even the unbound. these battles took some pultice use yes but still. so long as you can keep a good stock of pultices on you its a great setup.

So how do you play? what orders do you give before battle?

I think Leliana comes with that tactic. It was terrible. She'd run for bowman then run back then she'd run for bowman and then come back. Anyone else have this happen? I took that line out.

I don't use tactics, I disable them all. I manually impart every order for every fight.

For my archer, I have stunning skills at the top of my tactics just in case some melee monster targets her and the rest or sustained abilities. I have Leliana as my archer, I have her use suppressive fire, rapid shot, and one of her songs on then just have her attack constantly. This debuffs the crap out of anything she attacks. And for crowd control, I have her use scattering shot. But thats about it.

I'm not that great at tactics, but my first line for all party members and the Warden is

self.health<50%.use lesser health poultice.

for my mage line 2 is always self.mana<75%.use lyrium potion

Dog line 2 is self.health<25%.mabari crunch.

from there on it depends on the party mix...

party: dual rogues, dog, morrigan.

Lel archer: ranged, archer: enemy.using ranged or magic attack.attack or critical shot

self.attacked by melee attack. rapid shot

ally.morrigan.attacked by melee or ranged. attack

Morrigan: ranged, damager: enemy using magic attack. a hex or elemental depending on my mood and point in the game.

ally. Leliana. attacked by melee or magic attack. mind blast or crushing prison.

Results: Lel and Morrigan attack other ranged enemies, and help defend each other.

Dog and the Warden: varies, but Dog is set as a defending or aggressive warhound focused on: first - defending the Warden, second - attacking mages.

Seems to work ok though I am still experimenting

Set Leliana's behavior to "Ranged".  This will prevent this sort of fibrillating (or it should).  In fact, make sure everybody's behavior is changed to something other than "Default".  I always set my fighters to "Aggresive"; Leliana (when I build her as an archer) and Morrigan to "Ranged";  Wynne (always my party's healer) gets set to "Cautious" and rarely gets involved in actual combat.

I think this thread would be very interesting is we all contribute with their tactics.

I play DA in other language (Spanish) so i don't know if all tactics are well translate.

I playing a nature mage with morrigan (nature mage too with her default spells of course), sten (Shield & Mace) and Leliana (Bow & 2 daggers).

My Character

   1. Self : Health < 25% // Use the lesser health poultice

   2. Self : Mana < 10% // Use the lesser lyrium potion

   3. Self : Mana < 90% // Cast Spellbloom

   4. Sten : Health < 100% // Cast Regeneration

   5. Sten : Health < 75% // Cast Heal

   6. Enemy : Near visible enemy // Attack

As you can see I barely have tactics with my character because i always control it.

Morrigan

   1. Self : Health < 25% // Use the lesser health poultice

   2. Self : Mana < 10% // Use the lesser lyrium potion

   3. Character : Mana < 90% // Cast Spellbloom

   4. Self : sorrounded by 2 enemies // Cast mind Blast

   5. Morrigan : Enemy attaked her // Cast Horror

   6. Enemy : Rank elite or higher // Cast Affliction Hex

   7. Enemy : Rank Boss or higher // Cast vulnerability Hex

   8. Enemy : Clustered (?) by 3 // Cast grease

   9. Enemy : under effect (limited movement) // Cast Tempest

   10. Enemy : Rank normal or lesser // Cast Stinging Swarm

   11. Enemy : Near visible enemy // Cast Lighting

   12. Enemy : Character's target // Attack

I use with both (my character and Morrigan) shapeshifter forms a lot. But i don't use any shapeshifter tactics because are glitch.

Many battles have a Elite enemy clustered by at least 3 or 4 enemies, i always cast earthquake with my character and Morrigan cast affliction Hex on the Elite, then i start to cast a tempest and morrigan cast the grease. When i cast a stinging swarm for aditional damage, Morrigan start to cast other Tempest, then Morrigan cast another stinging swarm and... well... are all dead.
The key of this tactic is the two crow control spells (grease and earthquake). Morrigan's grease makes them slip and reduce their movement speed, then i cast a earthquake (I LOVE it) that makes them fall and, of course, reduce their movement speed again.

if the enemies can't fall or slip (wolfs, the deep roads things (i don't remember their name, "depredadores" in spanish language), werewolfs, etc) i start to shapeshifter in a Flying swarm while morrigan cast her affliction Hex and grease (for the movement speed penalty). then i attack them with the swarm and they barely can hurts my because the movement speed penalty.

Sten

   1. Self : Health < 50% // Use a health poultice

   2. Self : Sorrounded by 2 enemies // Taunt

   3. Self Sorrounded by 3 enemies // War cry

   4. Enemy : Near visible mage // Shield Blash

   5. Enemy : Near visible mage // jump to 11

   6. Leliana : Enemy attacked her // Shield Blash

   7. Leliana : Enemy attacked her // Taunt

   8. Leliana : Enemy attacked her // jump to 11

   9. Enemy : Rank elite or higher // Shield Pummel

   10. Enemy : Rank elite or higher // Assault

   11. Enemy : near visible enemy // attack

Sten is my tank, he taunts every enemy that he can, mages are my priority so i order sten to attack the mages when he view them. Morrigan and my character can protect themselves so i do a tactic to protect leliana if her is attacked.

Leliana

   1. Self : Health < 25% // use the lesser pultice
   2. Self: under effect (Inmobilize) // critical shot
   3. Self attacked by melee // change weapons
   4. Self attacked by melee // dirty fight
   5. Self attacked by melee // jump to 10
   6. Enemy : near visible mage // pinning shot
   7. Enemy : Rank elite or highter // Crippling shot
   8. Enemy : High armour // Shattering shot
   9. Enemy : Sten's target // attack
   10. Enemy : near visible enemy // attack

I use leliana's critical shot to shatter the petrify (inmobilize) enemies (my character have petrify of course), if leliana is attacked by melee she change her bow for the daggers, and attack the enemy (sten will try to help her). If she see any mage she try to inmovibilize the mage with her pinning shot if she success then she try to score a critical shot while sten is attaking the mage.

Well.. that is all, i know i have terrible english, sorry about that.

Thanks all that contribute with yours tactics.

I'm not at my gaming PC right now, but I can give a brief outline of how my tactics are set up.

First off, behavior (this is important, but often ignored):
I've got my melee fighters all set to aggressive (I tend to use the "Hold Position" button to stop them from running into traps).  My Archers and combat mages set to ranged, and my support troops set to "Cautious" (that would be Wynne the Healer in my case), or "Passive" depending on my mood and the situation.

Tactics:
Myself (dual weapons) -- I usually don't do much with tactics for myself since I rarely every don't have control of him/her, but I do a few to make sure he/she survives while I'm distracted.
[Aggressive]
1. Self, health <25% >> use least health poultice
2. Self, Any >> activate any buff I use all the time
3. Self, Any >> activate a second buff I use regularly
3. Self, Any >> switch to my preferred weapon set
and so on... (you get the idea).

Leliana (set up as an archer with some two handed):
[Ranged]
1. Self, health <25% >> use least health poultice
2. Enemy, nearest Mage >> Critical Shot (or Arrow of Slaying if she's got it) "I hate mages!"
3. Self, being attacked by melee >> switch to melee weapons
4. Enemy, attacking self >> Dirty Fighting/Below the Belt/Attack

Alistair (sword & Shield tank):
[Aggresive]
1. Self, health <25% >> use least health poultice
2. whomever Leliana is targeting >> Attack/Shield Pommel/Bash/whatever (the intent is to get Alistair & Leliana teaming up on the same target).
3. Leliana, being attacked >> attack the b*st*rd attacking her.

Wynne (Healing/Support only):
[Cautious/Passive] (<- can't decide yet)
1. Hero, health <50% >> Heal (yes, my character comes first).
2. Ally, health <50% >> Heal
3. Hero, being attacked by melee >> glyph of warding
4. Self, Mana <25% >> jump to 8 (got to save the mana for the all important healing).
5. Alistair >> Heroic Offense (luxury items that are skipped if mana is in short supply)
6. Hero >> Heroic Defense
7. Hero >> Heroic Aura
8. Self, being attacked by melee >> glyph of repulsion
9. Self, health <50% >> use least health poultice
10. Self, mana <25% >> use least mana potion

Sorry, I couldn't go into details, but that's the outline.
