"We have a canon" solution -- Thedas history can be Shrodinger's Cat!

Bioware says that they have a "canon," or "default" setting for the end of DA:O for people who want to play DA2 without importing their DA:O setting. The benefit to this is that you get to increase your market accessibility, which is a good thing. Not only people who didn't buy DA:O, but people who did, loved it, but for whatever reason never ended up beating it, can jump right in.
The PROBLEM is that once that's out there, we all have that sinking feeling that our Warden wasn't THE Warden, and our Warden chose "wrong" when they made Anora queen, sponsored Bhelan, or didn't go through the DR.
I think the best way to have done this would be to take that list of flags that are set based on choices in DA:O, and currently have a default setting for a brand new game, and randomize them at the start of every game.
- The paths are already all there, so this isn't actually any extra creation work, just a random number generator at start-up to set those values.
- This way, now there's no "real" Thedas history that we either got right or wrong while playing through DA:O if the history is randomized in every game of DA2.
- It just adds replay value! It would be fun to see what unique variation of Thedas you're playing this time, going into it and being surprised by the little things.
Like I said, I know it's probably too late in development to actually do this, but I just thought I'd share my little solution because I've been thinking about it a lot since I saw that interview. No matter how you slice it, it feels a little invalidating knowing that my character(s) made the "wrong" choices. It would be neat to preserve the idea of Thedas as a history in motion while not promoting one outcome any more than another.

Seriously, Triceratops and Stygimoloch are now no longer dinosaurs? Pluto is no longer a planet? Asperger's is no longer a disability (well, it no longer EXISTS)? Get it together, scientists.

It would be cool to see what set of choices you ended up with each time.

Shouldn't this be called Schrödinger's Canon?
I'm down for that

When I played ME2 through without importing a save and found out that Shepard had let the council die and done a few other things that I hadn't, I was like "wow this Shepard is such an ass" and I found it really difficult to care what happened to him because they were not the choices that I thought were "right"
If the set up at the start had been randomized then it would give people who had played the first game a reason to bother playing the second through without importing their save.

All the things you just listed are what scientists getting it together looks like. Science is all about constantly revising previously-held notions.Bryy_Miller wrote...

As for Schrödinger's Cat, well...I wouldn't judge all science based on Quantum Mechanics. Everyone knows it's a bit...out there.

Agreed...also, I haven't read anywhere that Asperger's Syndrome no longer exists.

Not a bad idea. Not sure how easy it would be to implement, though.

It's very simple, I think! Admittedly, I haven't done much programming since university, but usually there's a numerical value for every fork in the storyline, and the values that make up the state of history at the start of DA2 are set depending on your choices in DA:O. As it is, those values will just be set to defaults for new DA2 games. All I'm proposing is a quick in-game diceroll that will randomly set each of those values to one of the possibilities, instead of having them be fixed ...
I don't know if that makes sense

If you haven't done much programming, you still would know better than I, as I haven't done any.

It's no longer a separate syndrome (really, it never was - the point here is that the medical commuity was wrong, and now they've made a correction). Asperger's is just part of a Autistic Spectrum.Riona45 wrote...

No, we won't. What YOU choose is YOUR canon. Aside from that nothing else should matter, especially not someRosaAquafire wrote...

In theory a nice concept, but like I said: the default is there for the newcomer. This means there will be as few references to the previous game as possible, to avoid confusing the player. Randomizing things would not help achieve that.I think the best way to have done this would be to take that list of flags that are set based on choices in DA:O, and currently have a default setting for a brand new game, and randomize them at the start of every game.
Besides, now you have an excuse to go back do a totally different playthough (not that I would do that).

Wow, I think this is a really good idea! I wonder if new players would really *get* it though. The game would have to mention early on, somehow, why certain random differences in the history were occuring with different playthroughs.
Why should they explain anything to anyone who is playing a SEQUEL to a STORY BASED game.

That said, randomizing everything achieves this anyway and does it better, so it's a good idea.
