Whose story is it anyway?

Let me briefly introduce myself. I've recently played through dragon age and have enjoyed the game alot. One of the main things I loved about this game was the dialogue. The effort Bioware spent on this game, especially on the scriptwriting and the voice acting is mindboggling. I think this will set the standards, or at least introduce a new perspective, for games/stories to come.
I'll be honest, I haven't spent much time on these forums. But I've noticed that alot of people are having problems with the supposed "new direction" dragon age 2 is taking. Moreover, there have been talks saying that the writing team is "diva like" and that they think that "this is their story and they think they can do whatever they want with it".
Now I don't see what the problem is with that. I mean, this IS their story, is it not? Just because we played through it, we do not become entitled to the story and have no right to tell the writing team how to write their story. For example, just because you read Hemingway, it doesn't mean you can tell him what to write next (I don't mean to compare Hemingway to Bioware's writing staff, but Bioware has produced its share of wonderful stories over the years). I hope that someone will agree with me that given their success, the writers deserve, at the very least, the right to work on and develop their story in peace.
Few authors release their unfinished work to the public for opinions. While it may be Bioware's intent to ask for fan input, I doubt that the purpose of these forums are to have the fans write the stories or decide on the direction of the stories. I think Bioware is making a very bold decision in having the writer(s) communicate with the fan base directly, in the case of David Gaider and co. I cannot imagine the frustration that these writers have to deal with. Not to mention that the writers would probably have to hide their frustrations for fear of bad press.

This is a video game meant to be bought and enjoyed by consumers. BioWare makes games that we are supposed to be invested in, that we care about, that we want to see continue. People not liking the new direction is to be expected. They have every right to voice their opinions. No matter which way you look at it, if people didn't like what BioWare was doing, the company wouldn't make money, and then they wouldn't make games. Pleasing a fanbase is in their best interest.
That being said, there are only a few people who really hate the direction the game is going. People who are content with it aren't going to serial post in every thread about just how content they are all the time. Don't confuse noise on the forums to mean that's what we as a fanbase prefer.

Well that tends to happen when you throw on horns, demonic looking body paint, and long finger nails on a race that was generally heterosexual before, just to "set them apart".
WTF?
Anyway, I will say that if the devs are deeply frustrated by people's complaints, they are doing a fantastic job of not showing it.

If there's something that I don't like about the game, there's not really anything I can do to change it. I've chosen to play it, I'm along for the ride that Bioware has constructed. It's just that I get to choose which twists and turns the ride takes me on.

Ah yes. Just like everything else in life, the voices of the malcontents are always the loudest.

Yes because this change clearly ruins the plot of all future DA games.
Oh and also, what the hell kind of gay men do *you* hang out with? Sounds kinky.

I shudder to think what "story by committee" or "story by popular vote" would turn out like.
Well, every single character and npc in the game would be romanceable and your party size would be infinite for starters.

In the sense you're asking, yes it is absolutely Bioware's story. I shudder to think what "story by committee" or "story by popular vote" would turn out like. Eugh. I think Bioware's writing team by now has a pretty good idea what critics and fans like to see in a story, and really, how much do any of us know about DA2's story? Not much. Certainly not enough to get all hyperbolic about it.Blumbum wrote...
