i recently purchased this and just finished my play through.  it took about 15 hours total.  I didnt do all the quests and infact i had about 20 still left undone.

Over all i thought the story was interesting, but over all it was rather easy.. (perhaps that was my party)  I had almost no deaths through the entire playthrough.  perhaps  maybe 10?  a couple were wipes basically from just not paying attention and letting AI do its rather unspectacular job..  (not a big deal)

orgins i thought have many more challenges over all.  Pretty much the only challenging fights i found was the arcitect.  everything else was pretty ho humm.  the dragon fight in the swap was interesting, but not really hard.  It just took a while and a bunch of potions., but constiering i hadnt used basically any up till then, other than a random one here and there, and of course a bunch of small mana potions it wasnt a big deal.

I did find it much more of a dungeon crawl than orgins, which i kinda found rather disapointing.  I personally play bioware games for story, not creature romping.. If i wanted mindless killing id play diablo.  (that style of game play hasnt interested me in over 10 years)

there were some interesting storys, and i did think some of the flavor stories were nice.  Like the guy with the weding ring delivery, and some others of the sorts.

But over all i found the campanions rather lacking in flavor..  what could of been deep stories and interactions felt almost like they barely brushed any surface.  Even the character like/dislike to you seamed like an afterthought.  Like at the end they realized they didnt do anything for it, and then added a few random gifts, not like they effected anthing in the game.

i really would love to see more offical campains, but i really hope the represent  the orginal orgins, verse awakenings.  Ill take no voice acting, and a great story over what i got in awakenings any day of the week..

awakenings wasnt all bad though.  the story was nice over all, and i really liked the whole vigil keep aspec.  I also thought the city was well done.  Over all it was rather enjoyable..  But it did come up shy on the leanth of campain, and the character developement .

I also thought the areas were well done over all..  atleast as far as the visual aspecs went, along with a nice varreity of enviorments.

Over all, id say maybe an 8.5,  story was rather shallow though so maybe about a 6..  which is suprising coming from bioware..

i really liked the howe character,  he was by far the best of the 3 i had in the party.  Ogren wasnt all that intersting this time.    the mage.. was really rather boring too, and he reminded me way to much of alister.. humor was almost identical.. if i closed my eyes i really couldnt tell the difference.   I also would of though as a templar his reaction towards me woujld of been bad..  but really it had no effect, even though i did everything i could to make him angry like not destorying his phalectory, and hunting mages and working for the chantry, and he just kept chugging along..  I didnt recruit the female dwarf or the sheild guy so no clue on how they are.  that will be for another playthrough.

Im wondering if you can get the elf in the party..the mage from the forest.. she seamed like a very interesting character.  If not thats really a shame.

I do look forward to another deeper installment from the offical bioware folx..   so how bout it?

Those are pretty much the same thoughts everyone has here. The underdeveloped companions is my biggest complaint considering they all had lots of potential.

About the difficulty, when I played it with an imported Warden from Origins, the game was pathetically easy. With an Orlesian Warden however, the difficulty is much better balanced. It's clear the game was designed for a new character starting at level 18 and not an imported character that was also carrying several upgrades from the original campaign (points from the fade, tomes, extra talents and skills).

accually.. the character i used was a lvl 18 import.., the character wasnt really all that powerfull..as i didnt really add much for upgrades, other than the fade points. I also just used templar armor, and a few other things form the orginal campain.. basically the gear i had from like lvl 10 on and never bothered to change anything. I used wardens neckless and no rings,.. my boots and gloves and belt were also nothing special at all, everything else was all better from the new campain, and i even didnt bother upgrading armor or neckless to more powerfull things, even my weapon i used was nothing that great.. i found that very early in DAO.

everything i found other than the main armor, and neckles which i never swaped was all new stuff from the campain... then again a sheild fighter is pretty much invincible anyway.

I never even added runs to anything.. and most of the time i just sold everything i found.. and didnt bother buying anything other than paying for walls, and buying a few potion componets..

perhaps if i had another character it would of been harder.. but with a sheild fighter it was like easy mode from the start (i played on hard, and accually checked about 5 hours in.. thinkiing.. did i swap to easy? on annother play through and forget to reset? I didnt...

this one battle i got bored and everyone died in the start of the fight,, the one battle near the end, with the armored ogre and the elite mage.. the fight took about 10 mins.. But i yawned through the whole thing. .

One thing, you said you had about 10 deaths in the whole game. I always go for a zero death game (for me or my companions) which increased the challenge considerably for me. I also play on nightmare difficulty.

Nonetheless, the game is much easier than Origins, that's for sure.

well..  6 were  in the seige on the city..  and basically me not paying attention...   i was just letting AI do everything and didnt bother to look at the other characters..   the 3 characters droped all at the same time..  once was leaving the chantry..  i wandered off, and didnt see the emessary that was to the left..  I dont even know what he did, but they all droped at the same time..   the other was the armored ogre and battle mage, both elites..  i basically was tanking the armored guy, and then noticed the mage and draged um both right into the middle of everyone pilled up in one spot..  i was being super lazy.. and didnt bother to just click on each of the other guys to move them out of the way..

basically me just not taking any effort what so ever with my back turned and then i noticed everyone was dead a second later..

a couple were random ones that  howe wandered off and got wacked cause something snuck up behind him..   again,  User error..   Not because it was hard..  Basically it was because the game was so easy.. that i just was content with doing basically nothing to keep the team alive other than hitting taunt on a rare occasion..

i barely even set tactics on anyone,,.  Never touched howes, and i think the only thing i did on the mage was remove a couple spells from the list, the mage was set up to use the arcane bolt, freezing touch, heal and regen..  thats it..  and i almost never switched to him to cast anything else other than a rare cone of frost, or to cast defence on ogren a hand full of times..  i didnt even add a last ditch potion..  rarely would i even switch to anyone other than my main..

on rare occasions i would use a stamina potion.. i think i used maybe 5 the whole time?  the only battle i needed potions was the armored guy that everyone droped..  and the archteict..  i think i used 2 small heals on the final battle..

I just completed my first game and I have to agree with what you said. I made the mistake of importing one of my solo characters and he was so over powered that game was almost boring. I had to go the same route as Zjarcal above. No one could drop and I used no potions for the game. I think I reloaded 5 times after starting that.

It did do one thing for certain. Made me happy my warden isn't going forward into DA2. Those stories are done and I need to start new ones. I'll have to try the Orlesian Warden next time and make a balanced build instead of hardcore build.

I also just finished my first playthrough of Awakening as a

dwarven noble rogue import of lvl 23.

Carrying in inventory 3 massive armor suits (blood dragon,

Armor of the Legion and Cailan’s Armor) a few high end weapons and wearing

Warden Commanders Armor myself as well as Marics and duncans sword and of

course the high stat necklace and belt.

In some places where my companions were all dead for some

reason I just wouldn’t lose health. Especially at the end were we had to fight

1 bad ass disciple and about 10 of those children things I was solo’ing them

while my friends were down. Without having any problems other then not having

enough stamina to keep my abilities fueled my health didn’t even go down… Fun

to see, but quite boring.

My general expression of Awakening is that the game is fun… More

fun then Origins and way to short.

My opinion list about the campaign:

- Loved the idea of having a province to rule and protect.

- Hated the idea of not being allowed to actually rule the

province you occupy:

1. Like recruiting and training additional soldiers instead

of constantly hear whining about not having enough soldiers.

2. Like paying for the rebuilding or reinforcing of various

towns damaged or destroyed by darkspawn.

3. Allowing the soldiers to use rune improved weapons by

using a rune donation box system like in the Origins camp.

- Did not like to see the choice I had to make between

Amaranthine and Vigil’s Keep or atleast having to see the Keep fall after I had
reinforced it so dramaticly.

- Did not like the missed chance of exploring the deep roads

under Vigil’s Keep… Potentially leading to long lost and even by the dwarves of
Orzammar forgotten Thiags.

- Did not like the missing talks and romance choices I saw in Origins it
was boring to raise or lower their opinion of you only with gifts (which I had
only collected and not even given to them

file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Robin/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image002.gif)

My opinion about the companions after my first complete playthrough:

- Liked 3 companions … Sigrun,
Anders and Nathaniel.

- Disliked 1 companion … Oghren

- Didn’t really speak to 2

companions… Justice

and Velanna

- Felt sorry to see 1 companion

not live through the joining (twice) … Mhairi

Overall I think the expasion deserves an 7/10, it loses 1 point for being way
too short and 2 points for having some things I did not like (see above
list).

In my opinion this expansion Dragon Age: Awakening should have come first and
from the

moment the Arling of Amaranthine is “safe and secure” after the final battle
the

whole “battlefield” should expand to include the remainder of Ferelden and

having to fight a sentient intelligent Arch Demon awakened by the “intelligent”

darkspawn who escaped your wrath. Who uses his power of magic to make all
darkspawn

smarter and more intelligent without the constant use of grey warden blood. But

also keeping the responsibility of ruling the Arling, recruiting new Wardens…

recruiting new soldiers… Visiting the Couselands in Highever for diplomatic

reasons.

Ow well a guy can dream can’t he?

I just finished my first Awakenings playthrough, with an Orlesian warden, and agree that combat is usually much easier than Origins but I still got a fair number of injuries from attacks that would do 200+ points of damage. For instance, something quickly killed three of my party just outside the chantry in the siege on the city - I think it was the sharpshooter.

I never bothered to buy any gear nor make any runes. Runecrafting is not my idea of fun.  I'm also not much interested in having 30 different spells or talents to choose from.  I like having to be tactical and choice is good, but there can be too much of a good thing.  I mostly stuck with the tried and true Origins spells and talents and only used the new ones vs. some of the bosses and elites.

The only reload was with the two dragon thralls. A combination of factors - I had gotten lazy from all the easy combat, it was my first major quest, and my warrior warden was still clad in second-hand stuff. Dang that Silverite Mines bug - I had to replay the whole area, stripping down first.

What impressed me most about Awakenings was the visuals.  I quite liked the look of the different areas.  I thought the companions were well done, too, but you get to know them much less as Awakenings is a smaller game all around.

yea..  what ever it was that has to be the same thing that got me as well..  i exited the chantry and charged down the stairs and started waking away, and then noticed that everyone else was dead..   whooops   lol

in some ways amakenings reminded me a lot of the sword coast expansion.  In the aspec that it just added a lotta combat, with some decent story..  but not much in the way of any NPC backgrounds.

really i did think it was well done, just not as well done as orgins.

and im with you on the girl dying in the joining, i was really bummed that she died,  i really wanted to have her as a compainion..

the other person mentioned someone named Velanna,  Is that another NPC to recruit?  if soo where is she?

She's the dalish elf you encounter in the Wending Woods.

Yep, when you first encounter her she'll ask you to kill her, but if you keep the conversation going you can offer her to come with you into the Silverite mines. Once that quest is over she'll ask you to let her join the Wardens.

A word of warning, she can quite easily become one of the most annoying companions you have depending on how you treat her.

sounds fun.. thats what this game has been missing.. thats the one thing that i really miss compared to Baldures gate, How you treated your party members, and more imporanatly the choices that you made really effected them to a huge degree.. having one get all bent and start a fight with the rest of the group, or basically telling you to sod it off.. and walk away in a huff.

I really wish this game had much more of that. Ahh well, here's hoping to new mods : )

I think i am nearing the end of my first playthrough of Awakenings(beat deep roads and marsh parts), and excepting a few minor issues with a few parts where....

Characters heads would move wierdly during a conversation(only happened 2 or 3 times tops), 1 guard looked like it was superimposed on itself during a scene at Amaranthine(1 time only), and the merchant bug(i recruited one..she showed up, then disappeared...didn't know i could recruit the other, and he showed up...yes, i had to check the DA wiki to see what the dealio was) i found it pretty fun...except for one part, of course.

As soon as i start up the game i see this bad ass female Warrior with my imported character...i honestly found her to be extremely cool, as well as beautiful....i'm thinking to myself, now here's a nice little side dish while Leliana's gone, and she doesn't pass the joining:?....sigh. Where for art though, Mhairi:(. I actually nodded when Ohgren made the rack comment:). As far as character development goes i have to concur with those who point out the lack thereof, although it could be argued that you wouldn't normally have that happen in real life as well in such a short time span.

I actually rather enjoyed Ohgren being in Awakenings. At least he kept the pity party to himself for most of the game, unlike Origins when i wanted to stick a boot up his arse. Don't get me wrong, i kinda felt bad for the guy, but let's face it.....the future of the country is at stake. As some people would say though, isn't like a guy to be thinking with the wrong head? Especially Ohgren.:P

I have to say while i don't expect graphics to be picture perfect, it's obvious that Bioware is making advances in how well the they are coming along using the PS3. It was easily noticeable in both Leliana's Song and Awakenings.

I also have to say that i'm not finding myself complaining about bug issues while i am playing, because except for the few i mentioned above and one freeze in the woods just before entering the mine(my first DA freeze if i remember correctly) it's been pretty much smooth sailing for 17 hours or so. Except for a sleep period, this is all i've been playing.

I will have to see what happens when i start up a whole new Origins character and play it all the way through all the possible DLC for him/her to see if any save issues came along with the patch, as my GW was almost done with Origins when the patch hit.

My eyes did kinda bulge a bit when i saw the 10MB saves, though.

Awakening was interesting. I thought Anders showed that the templars weren't permitted to kill runaway mages anymore. The fact that he could escape from the Chantry and not get killed makes me wonder if Alistair or Anora didn't implement a change to the Circle tower to stop the templars from killing the mages if they run away (or if, like the Dalish getting land, the Mage boon is going to be part of the story regardless of whether the Warden is a mage or not)? Wynne's apprentice Aneirin was killed (they thought) when he was a kid and ran away, after all, and Anders stated he ran away seven times. I do wish we could've gotten to know the other characters better.

I've only just finished it, to be honest. Despite pre-ordering it, I decided to wait until 1.04 due to the horrors of patch 1.03.

Overall I found it pretty enjoyable. I liked the companions (even Oghren wasn't as bad as I'd been lead to believe, though his gift approval bug thing meant I couldn't finish his personal quest). Nathaniel was easily my favourite - too bad he's not a romance option.

For this game I used my gay mage who romanced Zevran (nice to see the letter in the Codex, but really it should have come from the private who, ya know, gives you your letters), spared the Architect and saved Amaranthine. Left Sigrun, Justice and Velanna at the keep, and they all died. (Well, technically Justice was already dead...and Velanna's corpse was missing). In his epilogue he ran off with Zevran to Antiva, which suited me fine.

I need to try with my Cousland prince consort and go for the other options next time, though I'm not keen on the "Warden disappears" epilogues that tend to go with those. Anyway...onward.

I totally agree

My biggest complain was the difficulity.

I had no wipes at all and I played on nightmare. Also my main character didn't die once.

He is kick ass but still.

Great game overall but and the ending was superb.
