I've had KotOR for a while, but I've never bothered to get past the first city area. However, I'm in the mood to actually beat it. Does anybody know any godo builds to use? I don't want to end up screwing myself with a bad build, like how I made my main character a two-handed warrior in DA:O.
Good characer build?

Well this all depends on what starting character type you are and which Jedi class you want to become.
If you want to be a Melee character you can go soldier/ Jedi Guardian and sink your points into Strength and Constitution with leftover into Dexterity(to be harder to hit)
If you want to be mroe into using Jedi powers then focus primarily on Wisdom and Dexterity (Again for AC bonus)
IF you can give an overview of wha type of character you want to play then I can be more diverse.
However with being a Jedi Wisdom is the most important skill for more effective Jedi Powers ( I normally sink enough points to start with at least 16 wisdom or higher for a non combative class)
Also keep in mind that you don't have to use your character lvl ups right away so you can save them for after Jedi training to get more force powers and feats, and there are plenty of stat boosting items and implants in game to help improve your primary stats further or to compensate sats that are somewhat neglected.

Why don't you check at gamefaqs for good builds?
I tend to make a scout for a mix between feats (dual wield) and skills (treat injury, repair and persuade as crossclass skill) but also for free implants.
Then i level up until lvl 5 and stop levelling until i become a jedi. I ALWAYS choose Consular for healing, buffing, force resistance and offensive powers. Any Jedi can wield lightsabers at a certain level.
hope it helps

Start with dueling scout. Alot of skills, good starting feats and skills. Two-handed becomes good only after you have become Jedi. Also dueling is better agaist multible enemies and good from start of game. Also go dex build, not str based. Str build is good for soldier/Jedi Guardian build. Because you can ignore skills, intelligent and even force powers.

Go Soldier/Jedi Guardian as mentioned earlier. Pistol weapons are not very good in the early stages of the game. Focus on perks to be able to wield two swords. This will benefits you when you become a Jedi, only then you use two sabers (a long and short one). Make sure when your a jedi to get the staple powers like jedi heal and speed maxed out. You can really dish out damage fast at max speed.

Damage? One attack round consist (assumptions):
1. Main hand
2. Off hand
3. Flurry (one extra attack with this feat)
4. Speed (one extra attack wit this force power)
So, one hand get 3/4 damage compared two-handed fight, because it's missign off hand attack. That's 75% damage what two-handed can do. Because "to Hit" and "defence" is usually between 20-30 for character. Then from dueling you get +3 "to Hit" and "+3 defence. That's 10% bonus to both. Also damage only helps with one enemy, because character can only hit with melee weapons one enemy at time. How ever, defence affects multible enemies, because multible enemies can hit you same time.
My point is that players look way too much about damage and forget that survival is about both offence and defence. 75% + 10% (from better to Hit) = 85% So, two-hand does 15% more damage. How ever, from one enemy it has 10% less defence. More than one enemy the difference goes up. So, two hand is good gainst boss enemies, what hole game has handful. How ever, pretty much every other situation in game consider multible enemies.
So, think twize before looking just damage, because then you defence leaks more. I example play at the moment in Kotor 2 one handed and I can kill most enemies with one hit. I have about 40 defence, so only boss enemies actually is able to hit me. Most the time I don't take any damage at all. So, it's more about protecting my team members than worring my own health. if I can allready kill enemies with one hit, increasing damage doesn't do any good for me.
How ever, if you go solder/guardian build, I would maybe go str and two-handed build too. Reason is that this build doesn't get much skills, force points or powers, so it's easyer to be in armor with high vitalty and strenght. How ever, Jedi sentinel or concelor is better to be one handed and dex build. Mostly because lower vitalty and more force points and powers. Means using robes what allows higher dex. Sure, you can do two-hand weapons too, but it comes good only after half the game has done. Meaning about above level 10. As dueling is good from level 1 to 20.

You know it's actually pretty hard to make a build that will screw you over in this game. I saw my brother beat the game on hard with str, dex, and con all at 8, just pumping wis and cha. It actually turned out rather powerful but my point is you don't need to put any thought into your builds in this game. Just do whatever sounds the most fun and roll with it. Any build can complete this game on the highest difficulty.

I'm playing atm (1st game of KotOR ever, w00t) as a Scout/Consular. Seems to be working okay so far. I admit I had a sneaky peak online for build advice.
I stopped leveling on Taris at lvl4 so I could maximise my Jedi leveling later.
I read adding more than 15 points to str, dex etc is pretty pointless, because of bonuses and so on. I have no idea if this is true, but my current build is Str 14, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 10, Wis 15, Cha 14 (I think, off the top of my head).
I never really know what to do with skills, so I tend to accept what the game wants me to take, sometimes taking more Persuasion if I feel I need it. Now I have Cure I don't need any more treat injury.

If you want to use dual sabers/saber-staff I would recommend a strength focused soldier/guardian.
If you choose to use a single saber, I would recommend a dex focused scout/guardian, as your damage potential is not fantastic, so you may as well take advantage of the better defense the dueling feats offer.
Edit: grammar

Okey, as I also ended my kotor 2 gameplay little while ago. I played in Kotor 2 also Jedi sentinel with many skills and one hand lightsaber with dueling. I build my self again dex based. What cause the end fight to be joke. Meaning my damage with one handed lightsaber was really good and my defence was sky high. I had like 41 defence, what meaned in end, that enemies could not even hit me.
Yes, you can build your character many ways, but there is differences how they play out.

Soldier/Guardian is what I usually use to tank the game.

I actually don't recommend a Soldier/ Guardian build. I feel that if you are going to go with a guardian you should go Scoundrel 5/ Guardian 15. Alot of the force powers, Stasis, Whirlwind, and their various evolutions will leave enemies "flat-footed" what this means is that they are not only easier to hit, but that if you have sneak attack damage i.e. scoundrel levels that you get to add that to your damage as well. This makes for a much more powerful attacking build, you'll get a few less feats, but you'll still have plenty to accomplish what you want as a guardian. My favorite build however, is Scout 5/ Consular 15. This gives you a decent mix of starting feats, as well as 2 free levels of implants (which have some pretty BA abilities) you have a decent base for hit-points and you don't get wasteful first level feats like Heavy Armor, which you won't wear basically once you're a jedi. The Consular gives you a ton of Force Powers allowing you to have all your favorites without worrying that you're missing something awesome. Shock and it's eevolutions are the most powerful attacks in game. I don't personally play sentinels often, but if I do, I'd go with Soldier class early to get some basic combat feats out of the way, as that's the only thing you'll really be missing if you go sentinel.
BTW the reason it is suggested that you take only 5 levels of your initial class is that there is a level cap set at 20, this means you want to get as many levels of jedi as possible. However to maximize your feats you'll want to take 5 levels of your base class, the only way I'd change that is maybe 6 levels of sentinel, for their class feats, or 7 levels of Scoundrel for another 1d6 of sneak attack dmg.
So my favorite builds are as follows,
Guardian--- Scoundrel 5/ Guardian 15
Sentinel--- Soldier 5/ Sentinel 15
Consular--- Scout 5/ Consular 15
sorry for the length
tl;dr lol

also on my consular build I typically go *Dueling feat chain as I like the defensive bonuses (+3atk and +3 defense at max) I boost my dex for defense (usually starting at 15 and as I level boost to 18) my wisdom and charisma will usually start at 14, and I add points to get Wisdom to 16. I always want high defense for my Consular as they have fewer hit points. The high Wisdom and Charisma are needed since their modifiers, (+2 at 14) are added to the save dc's for your force powers. If you need DC's and modifiers explained let me know, I'll be glad to help.
* that is focusing on 1 weapon not "dual-wielding"
