I ask this because I am finding items that are 100+ gold on some of the vendors..I think the most I had was about 50 and of course it goes fast if you upgrade to anything.
Is there a time when gold becomes a non factor? I won't want to cheat so I was curious.
Gold- Do you ever get large amounts?

In my first playthrough of the game my heroic achievements logged my highest total gold in possession at once at 253 gold. So yes, it is possible to get a lot of gold

Yea.. the game economy is pretty questionable in my opinion. 7 gold for the backpack from the camp merchant.. Several silvers for ONE freaking fire arrow... arrows should be 5 coppers each, not 5 silver!

Fire arrows are a special enchantment for your bow that are not required for the bow.
If you have no arrows specifically equipped in your quiver, you will attack with an infinite supply of regular arrows.

I'm about 2/3rds done if not a little farther and I have about 170ish gold. I find it easy to make money. I pick up everything and sale sale sale....

My first play through I had somewhere around 100g I think. I got tired of picking everything up and selling it about halfway through though. I suppose if I actually did pick up everything that wasn't nailed to the floor and sold it I would have had a lot more.
However, I do think some things in the game are overpriced especially if you consider the small amount of money you earn if you don't pick up every little thing.

I managed to get a backpack for 52 silver today on my human mage, but my thief had to pay 7g the day before. So I assume it may have something to do with the abilities you choose to select.

Also even if you play as a "good" character try asking NPC's for rewards, it will significantly improve your finances. For example, I found some documents once, gave it to the priest in Denerim and demanded a reward. She gave me 7 gold. On the other occasion I retrieved love letters for a dwarf fighter. He gave me 15 g! Needless to say I demand rewards from everyone from now on
