 Right, just to be clear, I HATE the idea of Hawke, I really do.
And this seems to be the general opinion.
Am i right in thinking it's a surname? So we can pick the first name but we have to have Hawke. I can get that, like Cousland, right?
Hawke can be male or female? Okay. Fine.
but my biggest problem is why BioWare would do this. Why take a good system (which needed a few improvements) and make it worse?
The ability to design your own character was one of the best bits of DA:O for me, why ruin it with this new system?
And, DA2 can't even be half done, right? So why does BioWare have this selective deafness on the huge dislike of Hawke, why don't they just say 'we heard you, no Hawke, you can design your own character,'

This would score them brownie points.

Your opinion?

Really? Why isn't BioWare changing a name I don't like? why are they ignoring people who keep saying they don't like the name? Well, besides the fact that we like the name (you'll have to decide for yourselves after you play the game whether you change your mind), aren't y'all the same fanbase that has accepted names like Elminster, Drizzt, Bilbo, Littlefinger, Belgarion, Pug/Milamber, Sadira, Haplo, Dresden, Cadderly, Tasslehoff, Gandalf, Cloud Strife, Geralt, a skull named Morte, even Cousland and Aeducan?

I have no doubt "Hawke" will cease to become an issue once people begin playing as him/her.

Cousland and Aeducan were actually pretty wicked awesome names, I think the reason people do not like Hawk is because to be honest it sounds real cliche. It also sounds like the main character of a bad 80s movie.

I have no problem with the name though I am just letting you know why I think Hawke is not as good a name as the other names you guys have come up with.

And that's fine. Everyone's got differetn tastes and backgrounds and influences, so they'll like different names. I'm more responding to those who believe that:

a) Hawke is somehow less creative or a worse name than any other we could give tothe character;
B) the name Hawke automatically ruins the game;
c) OMG why are you destroying my hopes and dreams, BioWare? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Yeah, those kinds of people.;) Personally, I believe that if fantasy fans can practically worship a dude named "Drizzt" or "Sephiroth," the name "Hawke" isn't that much of a burden, lol. and really, "Cloud Strife?" come on!

I'd really like for people to put out their idea for what the right name could be out to the community for critical evaluation. I think you'll find quite quickly that coming up with a name that everyone is happy with is a losing battle. Everyone just picks what they think sounds good, and if these things don't overlap, complaining follows.

This is exactly correct. Even if we changed the name, while it might make one group of people happy you'd just get another group complaining about the new name. When it comes to something that is subject only to aesthetic evaluation there simply is no magic bullet that will please everyone. Anyone who thinks that is fooling themselves.

And, no, the solution is not a toggle. Posted Image

You know as a writer I would really like to know whether you are really happy with Garrett Hawke. Or Marian Hawke for that matter. But seeing as the only response you could give would be public, hence 'official', I guess we never know.

Since my participation on these forums is voluntary, if I don't want to say something I simply don't comment.

I like Hawke as a last name just fine. Any name is going to have connotations that are particular to the person, so some people will never like it. Others simply need to get used to it, and then they won't remember that it could have been anything else. Still others like to mix in their feelings about other changes to the game, like the voiced protaganist, and make that the reason they dislike the name even though you didn't choose your last name in DAO either.

But if you prefer to believe that I'm not allowed to say what I think and that someone is forcing me to come here and tell you this, by all means do so.
