You know as a writer I would really like to know whether you are really happy with Garrett Hawke. Or Marian Hawke for that matter. But seeing as the only response you could give would be public, hence 'official', I guess we never know.

Since my participation on these forums is voluntary, if I don't want to say something I simply don't comment.

I like Hawke as a last name just fine. Any name is going to have connotations that are particular to the person, so some people will never like it. Others simply need to get used to it, and then they won't remember that it could have been anything else. Still others like to mix in their feelings about other changes to the game, like the voiced protaganist, and make that the reason they dislike the name even though you didn't choose your last name in DAO either.

But if you prefer to believe that I'm not allowed to say what I think and that someone is forcing me to come here and tell you this, by all means do so.

Well actually I am thinking you would just have ignored my post as you said you could just have not commented. I honestly couldn't even say why I dislike it. But I have seen quite a bunch of reasons why people don't. I just think it is maybe too simple. People would have expected something more 'WOW'. As some said, more Cousland or Aeducan like.

at first i thought hawke was a mandatory first name, but then i saw it was actually the last name. as a last name it's fine to me. as you said, we never picked our last name in origins either. da2 essentially has 1 origin instead of 6. that's the only major difference. i think people just want something to complain about. my only concern right now, and it is fairly minor, is that the pc version gets the same treatment as the console versions. by this, i speaking about development. i understand all the console changes need to get out there so console people know what to expect. i'm just hopeful the pc gets equal treatment during development.

also the only difference in regard to character customization is you have to be human. you can change facial appearance and whatnot. stop freaking out you people. even if you really hate the name hawke and can't get used to it is that REALLY going to get in the way of you enjoying the game?

Well as long as the lastname is my only problem I will get over it. Tbh I don't like my RL lastname either but I have to do with it. Anyway, human is just fine for me, since I don't like dwarves at all and aside from the ears, elves are not really different from humans in DA:O.

I didn't like Hawke when I first heard. It sounded masculine, it sounded cliche. I couldn't think of a better name though, and I figured that I would just come to accept it. I have. Now, I figure, with use I'll be unable to think of any other name being the "right" one.

I just thought, since DA2 is also known as DA:The Lost Human Commoner Origin, that the reasoning behind the name Hawke is to find a name that is on one hand a common name and on the other hand still should have sort of a coolness factor. So that's why Bioware decided to pick a name that people could think, hey, that's my neighbor's name!

Actually I could think of one even without lot of thought. Hawking. I'd like that better, but don't ask me why.

I can't say I really have a problem with the name Hawke; in fact I find it better than many of the surnames used in Origins. There's just something I really don't like about the name "Cousland" for example; I don't like the way it sounds, and it makes me think of cuisine every time I hear it. Even though I didn't like the name I went with it and survived the experience; granted I didn't hear it every two minutes as we likely will Hawke, but even when I did hear it I wasn't foaming at the mouth I was thinking of cuisine. Whether you like a name or not is a matter of taste (har har) but ultimately the surname of the protagonist is a really minor detail, and I'm not sure how it could really impact your enjoyment of either the story or the game.

Yeah but then all the posts would be about Steven Hawking...

Hm if I think about it I didn't find Cousland too well at the start either. But now I rather like it. I guess if you carried it through DA:O and DA:A, then it finally sits with you.

Yah I didn't think nobody would complain about that name either. But I wouldn't at least.

I don't have a problem with the name Hawke.

When I went to high school, one of my friends, his name was Drake. Not a nickname, thats just what his parents named him. Its actually a very historically relevant name.

So no I don't mind Hawke at all. As far as anything else about him. Its too early to tell and and little has been revealed. I really liked what I read in Game Informer about Dragon Age 2 so far though.

But those names are terrible. Seriously, go to someone who does not play RPGs and/or has not played DA, and tell them about that awesome Bhelen Aeducan dude you met, and watch them not accept the name as normal or otherwise 'good'.

Hawke is fine. Simple short names ftw when everyone has to use the same name :)

Ironically, although (some) people are complaining that Hawke is unoriginal and therefore boring, in the realm of fantasy it's actually fairly rare from what I've seen. The "normal" thing to do in works of fantasy is to use names that have weird/alternate spellings or have some meaning in a made-up language. Hawke is actually an exceptional name in that it breaks fantasy standards.
