Why were the archers in the gorge and not behind mantlets (for that matter why were there no mantlets at all) on the parapets above the gorge?
Why were there no catapults on those parapets (seeing that there were Scorpios present)?
How stupid is Duncan in the use of the Grey Wardens that he allowed his people (which are best classed as irregulars/skirmishers seeing the varied equipment and tactics) to be used as the anvil in a classic hammer and anvil tactic instead of the heavy infantry that Loghain has with him?
If the Grey Wardens were more then irregulars why didn't they use equipment fit for the task at hand?
If the Grey Wardens were more then irregulars why did they perform the utter stupid move of breaking rank to engage the enemy while fighting on the defense?

A better depiction would have been the Darkspawn leaving the edge of the forest approaching the defensive position set up by heavy infantry under what can be effectively described as a pin ****** worth of archer fire (seeing the plans calls for them being drawn in instead of calling of the fight in the first minute). Meanwhile the Grey Wardens are working on opening up (or keeping open) an avenue of attack for Loghains army.
When the player then clears out the first floor a movie should play showing the Darkspawn committing to the attack and the archers and catapults opening up with everything they have.
Clearing out the second floor a movie should show with Darkspawn starting to pour out of the tower wiping out the archers and catapults on the tower side allowing the Darkspawn in the gorge to get into contact with the defense.
After clearing out the third floor a movie should play depicting the Darkspawn having taken over the parapets on both sides while some ogres are starting to toss down rubble to prevent escapees (possibly with Duncan yelling that they can still win if Loghain and the army under his command engage to show that the situation is dire but not hopeless).
Then when the player beats the ogre play the movie showing that Lohain leaves, the death of the Grey Wardens since there is no safe place they can retreat to anymore. the defenders being decimated from the front, behind & above and the player being overwhelmed by the Darkspawn still pouring into the tower.

This sequence builds up from a routine order to the utter necessity of the player succeeding (to save the defenders, Grey Wardens and have any hope of getting out of that tower alive) making the betrayal of Loghain that more bitter and surprising (it was now predictable since he's supposed to be a genius at war and made so many mistakes that I'm wondering if he's a  blood mage who turned off everyones ability to reason).

Because they wanted the fight to be a dramatic action sequence, not a demonstration of tactical efficiency?

This is a spoiler. And it cannot be answered without giving more spoilers.

The battle is conducted according to someone's wishes. Considering his intentions, is it any wonder that all those points you mention are not utilized?

I think he forgot he's no longer playing Total War and is back in an RPG, where the cinematics are there for dramatic flair rather than reality. :)

The same problem happens in all fantasy movies/media. Real war sucks. It had to be made romantic to be consumable by the masses.

Yea I didn't understand why the grey wardens were in the gorge and in front of the gates? Why were they not on the gorge terrace shooting down upon the incoming army, dropping hot oil and such down upon the incoming army.

Yeah but that part where the Ogre squishes the king is so baddass. You are missing the point!

They used bad tactics because the king didn't care about tactics. He wouldn't listen to his Strategist remember? And that's why they were wiped out...

I think they were setting a trap that the Darkspawn would go for.

Why wouldn't the grey wardens fight at the front lines. Not sure what makes you think they are skirmishers. The grey wardens are elite warriors and they are very good at fighting Darkspawn. have you read some of the codex entries about the wardens? Or heard the story that Wynne tells about them flying into battle on griffon's and holding the lines during battle?

It looks like you'll have to remain unhappy. I would merely suggest to you to either find a job as a military strategist for video cut-scenes or stop playing games if they make you so unhappy over a simple video to post such a long diatribe.

These aren't really very big spoilers and yeah I agree with OP that the strategy was terrible. The same problem occurs often in movies too and it can be agonizing to watch.

Did you pay attention to the king at all?

He didn't give a s*** about strategy, all he wanted was the glory of front-line battle.

It´s in the title, so it´s visible that there are spoilers. Anyways the OP is right, i also wondered how someone as experienced as Duncan could lead his men and his king so badly in battle. On the other hand history is full of bad decisions in war, because of unable leaders.. and this King seemed very very unable to me as a strategist.

Which looks cooler people standing in a line slashing at darkspawn or doing a dramatic charge into the middle of the battle.

I work for a videogame developer and we do not currently have a cutscene military strategist on our books. If you want to apply for a job, go ahead...

... meanwhile, I'm with the posters above who said that this is a spoiler thread and that a full answer would also be a spoiler. Suffice it to say, a perfect defence was not meant to be
