Be that as it may, ATJ, Maric is never presented to us as someone who tends towards infidelity, even counting his dalliance with Katriel. Yes, he was betrothed to Rowan at the time, but as far as he knew, the betrothal was political and had no idea Rowan had fallen for him.
Now, that said, he and Rowan were on very poor terms at the end of Stolen Throne, so in the years between that and The Calling, I'm willing to bet that he and a servant slept together. We don't know the circumstances, so I wont make any conjectures. So, my money is on at least 3 kids, though only 2 are for-sure confirmed.
Sure - but I'm trying to think of ways to explain a) why Anders is a dead ringer for Cailan and Alistair (I just don't think the character modellers would do that without a reason), and
Heh, I guess I was looking at the infidelity issue through real-world glasses. I know that in our own ancient(ish) history, Kings have often had dalliances/taken mistresses with the tacit consent or even approval of the Queen. As emotionally heartbreaking as it often must have been, practically it was a better solution than the possibility of being constantly pregnant.
