Amazing, isn't it?

Bethany seems like a thing of the past.

Fuse Bethany with a female Qunari and create Qethani.

I really like the designs...they look alot more distinct than their DA:O counterparts.

Hmmm...also I think there's a reason why the female elfs are on their toes, those ankle bracers, or whatever, look incredibly painful.

I see people already clamoring for a female Qunari companion.

But are there any roles in their hidebound society fit for women adventurers? No mages, no warriors, and I guess thieving is right out... Unless they retcon something like the the Qunari version of "silent sisters" in, which would make Sten's puzzlement with the female Wardens in DA:O kinda dumb.

And that doesn't allow female Q'nari outcasts to show up?
I'd say - allow David G. and his 'gang' to surprise us ;)

I think from picture it looks like the Female Dwarves are thinner than they were previously. In fact it looks like with all races the female bodies are much thinner.

Ack - the female dwarf reminds me of the 'pretty dwarf' mesh within
the Nexus version of 'Natural Bodies: All In One'
(not that they will not look like R2 D2 without his salad bowl helmet
in heavy armor again in da2 ).

If we are talking about a single female Qunari, no need to retcon anything. Just like all those male Qunari we met in Origins/Awakening that left their society (or had to leave), a female could leave just because of their rigid system.
And yes, I'd like a female Qunari warrior companion. A lot.

I'm pretty torn here - loved dragon age, impatient for DA2, really excited to see female qunari, and elves that are more differentiated from humans, but the shtick about the image displaying different standards of beauty? Really? When all the women have waists that are around the same size as their heads? That seems to be a pretty restrictive standard to me.

Don't get me wrong, the art is very, very pretty, and I'm liking the design of the female qunari a lot (though one wonders why her waist is so frail when she has muscular legs and broad shoulders - poor woman's probably going to snap in half!), but what on earth has happened to that poor female human's legs? She needs to get to a hospital to get those breaks set! And to boot, she appears not to have a ribcage, and if she does have one, it's concave. Note to artist - female backs, when viewed at this 3/4 angle, do not just slope in, flat and concave, to the waist like that. Study http://fineart.sk/show.php?w=1395, for example. Notice how she has a ribcage? And looks like she could actually stand and support her own weight? This issue is also hugely prevalent in the female elf, but hey, different species, maybe they have flat, triangular ribcages. Heck, it explains some of the in-game history - It's easy to oppress people who can't breathe properly, given their physiology. They can't run off as fast. And precisely why the human and elf females are standing on tiptoes in some weird approximation of high heels is absolutely beyond me.

And if the dwarf male is allowed to be...rotund, shall we say, why does the female have that tiny nipped in waist? Nice to see that double standards are prevalent in Thedas.

Bah. This artwork depresses me. :/

On the other hand, excited at more news! Now I don't know what to feel anymore!

These are just cartoonish in style, slightly exaggerated...do not fret :)

BTW - all male torsos are naked, why then female ones aren't?

Did the females in vanilla (unmodded) DA: O run around topless? ;)

Odd though to see a NWN oc bra on the female Q'n :D

After the reading of the google doc (thanks again Sir_Occam), I am very and very pleased it mention the Etiopian Churches style. You can't even imagine how pleased I am. Even my pseudo is inspirated by their spiritual leader, called Abouna or Abuna.I really agree they're very intereinsting not only in their design, but also because of their historical background, which can be use in the Dragon Age Chantry's background.

Why?

just take a look in their most religious city: Lalibella and its most famous church : St Georges (Biet Giorgis).
This city is the replic of Jerusalem, with his river ethiopians consider as the Jordan River.Ethiopia, with the Falasha hitory, is also considered as Beta Israel, perhaps the most ancient and historical living proves of the Biblical Isreal :their culture and habits are quite similar what the Ancient Writings describes, perhaps even more than the actual Israel we know.
And then, the Ethiopian Bible, is the most ancient version (originally written in Ge'ez), so perhaps also the most respected version of the Writings. In more than 2000 years, his religion has not change or even disappear in front of islam expandation.Take a look in Eastern Africa and you will see Ethiopia is the only remain of a Christianism Church, every nearest country have an ilsamic religion. Here is an illustration of the strenght of Ethiopian Church.it has resist time and wars.
And bettween the roman and Ethiopian church, to well understand the differences, one should read the Kebra Nagast (Glory of the Kings), know as the (true) story of the Ark of Covenant.

And I really think it can be used to illustratre the Chism between the two chantrys of Thedas.
Ethiopian chuches art, habits, etc etc are very different of the Roman chuch. When I transpose those two real Churches, I imagine easily how they fit so well in the Dragon Age Chantry theories.

So, as the podcast retranscription says "And I've always been fascinated by these monolithic churches in
Ethiopia...very interesting. They're basically carved into the ground
out of these huge, erratic stones that were left there. It's really
interesting-looking. We're exploring those different themes
", if the Imperium Church design is inspirated by the Etiopian ones, it's for me a big big big great news.I just can't wait to see how it could be.
Thanks a lot Matt

Sorry to continue this, but I would only have commented on the wonkiness of the female human's legs if the image hadn't been sold as displaying "different standards of beauty" when it's just trotting out the same tired old archetype. :/

Also, I'd imagine the female torsos aren't naked because it'd swiftly get a nsfw tag. :P And remember, dragon age ladies keep their underwear on even in sex scenes!

...except for the broodmother. And now I've mentally scarred myself.

100% agreed.  I am so bloody sick of brown video games.  Video games that are nothing but gritty, realistic, and above all, the same insufferable texture and shade of bumpy brown.  It looks realistic, but it's BORING.  And not pretty.  Part of why I'm so looking forward to Kirby's Epic Yarn and Epic Mickey is for some COLOR in my video games, dangnabbit.

Thedas does not have to be brown to be realistic.

Well and in terms of landscape the danger of Triumph of Death and then Throne of Blood is that Triumph is almost 100% browns and Throne is B&W so the palette isn't there but you are looking a lot of fog and dull landscapes (it is Scotland in Japan). I'd almost rather of heard Ran from Kurosawa because you get a much brighter color plalette despite the fact that the subject matter (King Lear) is almost as big a downer ad Throne of Blood - see here for some images from Ran: http://www.google.co...l=&oq=&gs_rfai=

For those who can't follow:

nsfw = 'Not safe for work' (worksafe wiki entry linked)

How it can be safe to play video games at work may be a completly different story...

I've got to see more to make a more adequate evaluation.

Right now, I don't get the "new art direction" based on a 1562 painting and a 1957 B&W movie. The concept art seems to be created from four crayons the artist found scattered on the floor instead of working from a full palette. IMO, it's altogether cheesy and horribly cartoonish.

I'm still playing DA:O and am happy with it, especially with all the current and future mods.

Will DA2 have a modding community (via a toolset)? If not, then watch a quick death of DA2. I hope BIOWARE doesn't cave in to pleasing EA instead of pleasing the fans (by way of rushing out this "sequel")..

Don't get me wrong -- I'm pulling for DA2 to be a huge success, but right now I'm bamboozled.

about the architectural design, and the ethiopian churches:

here's a picture of the 12th century rock-hewn church of Bet Amanuel:

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but I'm not about to wade through 12 pages to avoid making a duplicate post.

What's the chances of making an RSS for these? Adding to the iTunes directory would be nice, but a simple RSS feed would be plenty. Otherwise it's not really a 'podcast'.

I'll listen to the podcast before making final judgment, but I find it odd that the caption mentions 'different standards of beauty', yet every single one of the characters, apart from maybe the male dwarf, if you're not a fan of beards, conforms to the same standard of beauty...

Well, let me break my opinion into points:

  • Elves and humans need to use the same scale as the artwork, Elves in Origins looked like tall thin Dwarves compared to Humans, their ears look ok, don't care about their orientation really, it looks cool nonetheless.
  • The female Elf's nose actually look like they were taken straight out of Avatar, just a remark, not a complaint.
  • Male Dwarves look very good I suppose, don't know why they remind me of Vikings though, maybe the beards?
  • I hate that the female Dwarf looks like a fat porcelain doll, I guess Origins established the dwarves are kinda bulky thing, but they're much too wide.
  • Humans look Human, not much to say there.
  • The male Qunari look hunched, maybe just a posture but that's not the vibe you get about them when you see or interact with one.
  • Female Qunari? not much to say, looking quite agile, a good incarnation, a lot better than the one I drawn in my mind.
All in all, an enlightening  podcast, though I do not like the permanent emphasis on the comparison between GOW and DA, do they even have anything in common?

I can say I'm still neutral about the general direction of the game, can't wait to know more about the changes in this sequel.

This is cool, nice one, I really like those designs. but it also makes me more sad I can't play anything else but a stupid human. I hate those guys. Still though cool enough.
