They may just be some quick background to place the early character shots in though.

Personally, I want marketing that includes Ms. Marian Hawke, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that one. How many times do we all have to go through the deluge of people who only see the images/videos and thus drop by here to rant about wanting a female option or don't even do that much and stay in the dark forever.David Gaider wrote...
You want the female Hawke's default name?Anarya wrote...
What is Lady Hawke's name?!? Graaaar Bioware why do you do this to us girl players? *cry*
Marian.
Doesn't EA WANT to reach female gamers?

But you're assuming the mass of gamers are intelligent enough to understand that just because there's a female character on the screen doesn't nullify their male character. In marketing, if you appeal to both, you'd only confuse the majority and they'd back out of the product. Since the product is more targetted toward a male audience, it's marketed towards males with this one big badass mofo that goes around ripping people apart.

It appeals to the God of War crowd.

For marketing purposes, you'd want the biggest appeal possible and God of War's graphic and brutal nature appeals to a lot of the male dominated audience.

That's the worst backwards justification I've seen in a long long time. If you show both protagonists, male players will magically forget that there's a male protagonist possibility...? Yeah....It's rare to say this, but I think you need to give teenage males more credit.Dave of Canada wrote...

I fully endorse both sex advertisement but..
Trust me on this, advertisement of two main characters can confuse the general audience. I remember there were a few threads on the Mass Effect 2 boards when they showed a picture of Female Shepard, people were like "wth? i didnt know i was playing some broad" and such. Female players were pleased with it.

I'm afraid it's true, Cat Lance. Young male gamers simply cannot hold the concept of "choice" in their heads, even taking into account statements like "You can choose to be a male or female Hawke."
I have no solid, reliable data to support this and my premise has not been in any way peer-reviewed, but I know it is true. After all, Jade Empire had a woman on the cover and it was not a runaway success. Coincidence? I think not!
Edit: My sarcasm failed, I guess. I don't
actually think this.

This isn't a stonewalling issue though, it's the sort of thing that marketing can fix fairly simply. Imagine an image with Marian and Mike Hawke back to back with some marketing slogan about choices blahblahblah on it, as well as a video showcasing both with maybe some footage of the male/female choice in character creation. It's the sort of thing that if they spent half a second on it, they could create extremely viable option that reach EVERYONE as opposed to cutting their nose of despite their face, by cutting out an entire demographic. Especially one that would have fierce loyalty. Many many women almost exclusively play puzzle games, fighters, and MMO's. WHY? Because in these games your sex either doesn't matter or you get to CHOOSE. If BioWare actually let people KNOW in the marketing campaign that their was choice of sex, they'd have droves of female gamers sticking to them like glue.

And...Metroid? Bayonetta? Tomb Raider? To be fair, with the latter two it was more fanservice than anything else. Though one of the things I appreciated about Bayonetta was how bluntly upfront it was about the fanservice. Refuge in audacity and honesty, and it worked.
As for God of War, Kratos has a very nice model to look at

I find no fault in your logic except for this. The only women they can market to are the ones that are not even aware this game yet exists. All of you that are already showing "fierce loyalty" are a given. Some of you may get angry and walk away, but most of you are already a sale. Marketing spent on you is wasted money, in a strictly business sense. Same as marketing spent on me would be. The current marketing targets males who have enjoyed similarly styled games but have not yet bought into BioWare fandom. It doesn't target women of the same description, nor does it target anyone that is already a fan of BioWare.Cat Lance wrote...

Oh, no, I meant female gamers in general. I used to be all over 1up and you'd be amazed, with DA and ME, a lot of the female gamers there were aware of the game, but not following articles or anything like that, because they thought they were yet another "boys only" game.the_one_54321 wrote...

If EA/BioWare made it plain in the stuff people see and consume easily, images/videos/commercials that they have a CHOICE about the sex of their own character, you have NO idea how many women gamers this would attract, and once they got here, they'd find out that this is NORMAL for BioWare games, thus they'd stick like glue.
PS-Why would I expect them to market to demographic they already have in their pocket? I don't expect them to market to us die hards, I expect them to make games that are enough in line with what they have made before to keep us. That is, giving us the choices. I'm extremely upset about DA2 ****ing a lot of the choice out of the DA franchise. I am also seriously shocked by the decision. Did they really not realize that was what we all liked?

Though I still maintain Kratos isn't bad eye candy. Just ignore the hammy VA and look at him from the neck down

I think if anyone did even a moderate amount of research on a BioWare made game all that would jump out and scream at them without delay. I see what you're getting at, but I tend to trust marketing professionals to usuall do what will attract the highest possible number of characters. That's the only goal that exists for marketing, after all.Cat Lance wrote...

Also, missed this one before, but this is a prime example of what is WRONG with the marketing for these games. They make them look like they are something they are not. Meaning that the people who WOULD enjoy them pass them by and the people who run out and by it on opening day are pissed as hell about wasting their money.Dave of Canada wrote...
