It's the nature of a group discussion. I'm not able to listen to it yet and a lot of people are probably in the same boat.

Anyway, since no one seems to be commenting on the podcast...
Who thought it was a good idea to hire an art lead who admits to loving what other people hate?
Also...are WoW and Gears of War really considered competitors of DA2?
Honestly, I'm not to bothered by the art I've seen so far (other than the hurlocks and the human/dwarf females in that concept art. The human female just appears to be poorly drawn and has...something...on her chin, and the female dwarf is starting to be a bit too Lineage 2 for my taste) and I actually rather like the environmental concept art.
I'll have to see more actual in-game art before I can really form an opinion about the overall art changes.

-The Qunari look more aggressive, like a people who originated from a violent, survivalist locale.
-The Elven race now possesses more of a feral, feline like form; one could even surmise that unlike Human origins from Primates, the Elven people decended from jungle predators or a more stealthy, lithe species.
-The Dwarves acutally *look* like a race which has rarely seen the sun, but demonstrate the iron and stone like nature of their surroundings.
I won't bother arguing with those still decrying every last change to the Look of Dragon Age, I will simply say that every new piece of concept art creates a great degree of anticipation for me. One question, however. We've seen a female Qunari now, so...does this mean Female Qunari Companion/Love interest? Now *That* would be something...and slightly painful...

Nah, seriously, they look good, but why does their clothes look Japanese, or is it just me?

*snerk* Oh, you mean Matt's whole spiel on his contrarian nature. Eh. I thought it was just a segue into him talking about that really oppressive, monolithic architecture. And the concept art that I've really liked so far for DA2 was the environment art, so no complaints about that.

Just over 19 minutes. It was very well done and I can't wait for some gameplay videos that show how all the different rigs look. Probably after the 17th. Also, I'm completely interested in how the other companions will look with the new design, the nonhuman ones I mean.

I can't speak for Matt, but I like the contrarian statement. It speaks to someone who has trained himself to spend time learning about things that others might not. Hopefully, we see it play out in the ownable art style that he discusses.Sable Rhapsody wrote...

on the chin I think that is a tattoo similar to some appearing in recent Star Wars creations

I really like the look of the Qunari female. It would be awesome if we could play and explore the Qunari race in a future Dragon Age game.

I wonder if the different rigs will be obvious enough where it'll spill over into gestures, battle animations, etc. Or if it'll just be a more subtle thing that gets rid of the she-hulk walks and some of the more awkward postures for PCs who aren't a human male. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I suppose that's a good point. Lets you draw from a broader pool of knowledge when designing things. And again, so far I've found the architectural concept art full of win, so props to Matt for that. Though as for an "ownable" art style, I honestly think y'all are fighting an uphill battle there. The market is so saturated with sword n' board fantasy, of the high, low, dark, chartreuse, and bright pink varieties, that I think a clean, attractive art style is probably as good as it gets unless you want to go super-stylized a la WoW.

With all respect for Victor Wachter and the work the Dev team does - I would like to point out that this search for a new Dragon Age style has made Dragon Age look like every other game out there.
Feedback, whether pro or con, is always welcome.
And i simply thinks he's wrong when he says that people couldn't identify Dragon Age Origins from a few photos, DA-O had a very distinctive style that is now replaced by what seems like a hybrid of WoW and the Teen-Titans cartoon, And in my book that's a really sad thing.
Though i hope i change my mind when i see more pictures.
As a fan of animation (not anime, think Disney, DC Comics animation, etc.), I don't think it goes all the way to the Teen Titans or even the WoW side of things. The models are stylized, but not so far away from realism as your examples. The color palette will make a big difference too.
We have months to go, and therefore more images to help you form your opinion between now and then.

Yes I can see why you may not have wanted to say it on the podcast (to avoid confusion with marketing and whatever), but we're all diehards here. Show some love for the ladies, please.

It's Hawke for both, isn't it? Please don't bring up ridiculous charges of sexism over simple issues.

The sexism was a joke, and I mean the first name, it's mentioned in the podcast.

I was thinking of it more on a level of designing for a mass market, yet loving things that most people hate seems kind of like working at cross purposes.Victor Wachter wrote...

Like I said, I generally like the artwork I've seen (with a few notable exceptions), but I realize that I apparently have somewhat idiosyncratic tastes, so I can't extrapolate from my own opinions to a mass opinion, which is important for the success of the game.

No I think you're very much not alone. It seems like this piece of concept art is getting a better reception than the first Qunari one. Or maybe the haters are just AFK at the moment, I don't know.
