Victor Wachter wrote...Let's just put this line of argument to rest. The purpose of the concept art is to demonstrate the base body, before you put clothes and armor and whatnot on it. Nobody is running around like they are in the concept art, and our men do own shirts.

Should I take this to mean female humans and elfs fight in high heels? Because I cannot help but notice they are both standing with their feet in the high heel Barbie feet position. Please. I beg you. Don't do that to us. It was good that the women in Dragon Age wore real armor, just like the men. Please, please, please don't high-heel-ify us. :(

Otherwise I like the concept art, except it makes me sad I can't be a dwarf. :crying:

No I think that's just an artist thing. It makes feet and legs look more graceful for women and it's harder to draw a foot from a frontal or 3/4 view if it's planted on the ground and make it look nice. Men's feet are easier to do flat because they're bulkier.

My 2 cents as someone who draws. Sometimes.

And yet it was managed with the female qunari and dwarf. There's no real need to make the female elf and human stand the way they are.

The dwarf's feet you are also looking down on from a higher angle so you avoid that problem. The Qunari has shoes on. It's easy to do with shoes, especially ones with a simple silhouette as hers have. Believe me or not, whatever. I'm just saying I would probably have done the same and it wouldn't have meant I thought she was wearing heels.

I think they are drawn like that to show that human and elves are more "graceful" and the qunari are more rigid in posture.

Wanna play a Qunari SO bad.

Why yes I *do* play Draenei. They're my favorite WoW race in fact. Anyway I like what I see so far. I won't miss the dwarven ape-arms.

My sentiments exactly. I love the Draenei. Image IPB

It sucks so hard that we can't choose our race in this one. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

So does anyone think that will be default "underwear" for characters?

The bald men in pants they have in the game look like male human conept art :)

Considering the mockery over the underwear in the first game, I think they'll at least be changed.

Doesn't really fit the time, though. I mean.. the female ones look more like erotic underwear taken out of a catalogue. Especially the female elf / human.

Erotic??? It's just normal top and bottom with a bit of red on it Image IPB the elf has a veil but otherwise it's just a fantasiy-ish onepiece

wow what amazing diveristy of standard of beauty. lets see weve got the regular hot human, the hot human with pointy ears, the short hot human, and the race that looks like the night elf with horns thrown in. i also like how if bioware stuck to their true art design for quinari the female version would end up looking hideous so they redesigned her to be the standard hot human female with horns elohel

It did twinge me and made me feel like this as well.  The line about 'an opportunity to explore the standard of beauty' while women basically look the same in every race.  Scary thin (where are their organs?), buxom, beauty queen faces, and lacking in muscle tone.  Body image relatively uniform.  I was hoping for more toned women juxtaposed next to their overly buff and bicep-heavy male counterparts.  I was also hoping for women with thicker waists and different shapes than hourglass waif.

I'll wait to see how the in-game models look.

FemShep's not an hourglass waif.  That was refreshing.  Although I do love how people on the ME forums complained about that as a bad thing.  DANGNABBIT they wanted Shep to have the option of looking like Miranda, and thus we have the dress from the Kasumi DLC :pinched:

Honestly, I'm fine with objectification in video games as long as both genders get some eye candy.  There's nothing inherently WRONG with emphasizing certain visual characteristics.  And boy did we get some eye candy n the new qunari...yum.

Hmm... Are my eyes tricking and/or failing me again or are males slightly blurred and out of focus, while the females are a bit sharper and brighter?

And for the podcast... its hard for me to understand anything about art direction and how things look when using words... I need more pictures and/or video dangnabbit.

It looks like they were all drawn seperately, and were moved onto the same sheet after the fact, which probably accounts for the different sizes and qualities.

As far as the landscapes and such go, I'm all for using pieces like The Triumph of Death as inspiration. But here is the thing- what I liked in Origins was the diversity of areas and landscapes. yes, some may have been construed as "whimsical" but its that contrast between whimsy and the harsher environments that makes the game the better.

If all we see are harsh, worn down, brutalist architecture and landscapes, that gets boring unified design or not. I want to see a nice vibrant Lothering and Ferelden first and then steamroll it with the Blight- its the contrast and change that keeps things fresh.

Agreed, mostly.  I'd rather my eye candy be more realistic and not over-exaggerated like an uber-buff cartoon character.   But hey, to each their own.

100% agreed.  I am so bloody sick of brown video games.  Video games that are nothing but gritty, realistic, and above all, the same insufferable texture and shade of bumpy brown.  It looks realistic, but it's BORING.  And not pretty.  Part of why I'm so looking forward to Kirby's Epic Yarn and Epic Mickey is for some COLOR in my video games, dangnabbit.

Thedas does not have to be brown to be realistic.

I agree...apocalyptic landscapes can be cool and all, but not if that's all you ever see. I hope there's a lot of geographic diversity.

This.  Why don't we ever see the effects of the Blight on the land?  All I've noticed were some burning buildings, and then some green grass, but yet the area is infested with darkspawn and it's nice as a late summer day outside.

guess because you never frequent the areas where the Blight is rampant, like Lothering. Ostagar is covered in snow and is mostly stone architecture.

I mean.. it's over the top for the time and age. [I know it's fantasy but I'm comparing to medival times irl]

You have a good point there.  I was thinking of Honnoleath (sp?) when I wrote that post.  I went there to get Shale after Lothering had been overrun and it was pretty far south.  So here is this beautiful little village that's overrun with darkspawn and doesn't look any worse for wear.  Also, what about the Kocari Wilds?  There is a whole darkspawn army hidden in there, and the land looks rather healthy.  Don't get me wrong, I loved the landscapes and environments that were created, but it was just a little something I noticed.
...actually, now that I think about it, I believe that there were some blight effects in the deep roads with the corrupted spiders - black water and a general feeling of ickyness.  Of course, that could be because I hate spiders.

And because spiders in video games are an embodiment of evil no matter what game we're talking about.  Blade spiders, the spider fight in the Deep Roads, D&D Spider swarms...spiders are just bad news in games.
