So last night I was trying to figure out how to create my own GDA
file in order to make it so that areas will not scale based on what
level I am.

I opened areadata.xls and basically just changed all
the values in the "minlevel" column.  So an example would be, if an area
was originally scaled from 10 - 20, I would just change it to 20 - 20.
The only exception were areas that had a prefix of "ran".  I assumed
that meant it was a random encounter while traveling from place to
place, and I just didn't think it would be right to force the player to
defeat level 20 monsters at level 5 :).

I compiled the
areadata.XLS file into a GDA file.. Strangely it made 2 files.  One
called areadata.GDA, and one called something like scaleparty.gda (can't
remember for sure, and it's not in front of me).

So I moved
areadata.GDA into my Override folder where all my other mods are
installed, and loaded up the game.  My question is - How do I know if it's working?
I loaded my current game and went to an area I hadn't been yet (Haven),
and it didn't seem very difficult, though I was expecting it to kick my
butt (My char's are about level 11-12).

-Is there a way to tell if it's working?  How can I know the level of the enemies I'm fighting?
-Was my modding process correct?  Am I doing everything right?
-Can I create my own sub folder in the Override folder for my new GDA file?  Does it matter what I call it?
-Anyone
know if that scaleparty.gda (or whatever it was called) that got
created along with my areadata.gda needs to be used also?

Thanks for the help.

there is more then one .2da in some .xls files so you get more then one .gda if you compile it.

and if yyou don't change a .2da you don't need a new copy.

there is multiple overrides in each addin. you should use the singleplayer override.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean be multiple overrides? and what is the singleplayer override?

So as I was experimenting last night, I noticed there were 3 or 4 different override folders. Is that what you meant be multiple overrides? If so, which one is the singleplayer one? Would it hurt to just put them in all of the override folders just to make sure it works? Or would that screw stuff up? Thanks.

(My)Documents/Bioware/Single Player/core/override/ (sorry for the forward slashes; the forum software doubles up on back slashes). It technically can also go in packages/core/override.

Awesome thank you! One more question though - I've read that putting more than one GDA file in the override folder will cause issues unless you put them in subfolders. Is this true? And if so can I call the subfolders whatever I want? Ie: Override/Areadata/areadata.gda

will that work?

Thanks again, I hope this thread will prove useful to other people looking to do the same thing as well.

you don't need subfolders, only one .gda with the same name is loaded, trying to add more is pointless, subfolder will not help beyond the fact that you won't overwrite the other. one of them will still not work.

other then that you can have as many .gda as you like in a folder.

when I got to My Documents/Bioware, the only folder in there is Dragon Age
