Update your video driver. I'm willing to bet you've got an Nvidia card.

Mine just plain crashes when I transition from inside to outside on the latest drivers CONSISTANTLY!!... win 7 64 bit OS, Phenom II 4x CPU... GeForce 240 GT (DDR 5)... running on a Gigabyte built mobo with 4 gigs of RAM... and yes, I just updated the driver, directx 9.0c, etc, etc, etc... like YESTERDAY... still the same old issue... can't leave the house after the 1st scene in the standard campaign... most annoying!!

And what version is your video card drivers? I ask because some of the NVIDIA card drivers are directly the cause of these kinds of problems and have been discussed frequently in these forums and on the Legacy BioBoards forums. If you are useing an NVIDIA card, I would strongly suggest reading This Tpoic

Your NVIDIA drivers are okay, what about DirectX 9.0c, have you installed that?

Please, post your system specs as is outlined in the first post of this topic

Yes of course, I updated directx 9.0c... I'm trying to play with all 3 official expansions installed and have ran the updater until I get the latest version... maybe it's because I might have updated each time I installed an expansion and/or I installed an expansion not in the correct order... I'll try a clean install... what is the correct order to install each expansion? I have gamersgate/D2D hybrid version...

Did you follow the step indication to install NWN 2, do not update, exit out after install and launch the game and play through the first conversation before doing anything else?

Yes!

Is it maybe because I am running it at my monitor's native resolution (1680 x 1050) and NWN 2 doesn't support it or something? I'm also running with all graphics settings on max, full AA, etc, etc, etc... what would you recommend I try running it at?

No, I run it on native resolution of 1680*1050 and my larger monitor at a native resolution of 1920*1080.

Is .NET Frameworks updated to version 3.5 or better?

Well windows 7 64 bit comes with .NET 4.0... but just to be sure, I went to microsoft, downloaded it... selected repair to original state... started up default campaign... got the furs, etc... walked outside... and... Hey no crash!! Well that's a plus... but now everything is pretty much BLACK... :(

In theory, you should not be having any problems. The only things that come to mind now are...

1. If you attempted to install .NET Frameworks 3.5 on top of 4.0, I don't know if that would even work. You would have to remove 3.5 and then update that to 4.0.

2. Antivirus/Antimalware programs. Some AV apps, such as Symantic (Nortons) and McAfee can cause strange behavior. Try disabling your AV programs when playing.

3. Custom content. Some custom content may cause strange behavior, especially those designed to allow for custom races and classes.

Hmmm... so... ok... I shut off ad aware... shut off SETI@home (it uses my GPU)... and tried again... took the furs, etc... walk outside... and crash to desktop... >.< It's like it's trying to change my monitor's resolution when I transition to outside... and something is buggy... because my monitor will display a change in DVI input... only well, somehow it's not working... again, I have the 64 bit drivers, not 32 bit ones... because I'm on win 7 64 bit here... so any other ideas that I can try? Could it possibly have to do with my 4 core CPU? I'll try forcing it to single core affinity with task manager and see if that helps...

edit: Well, forcing the game to a single core seems to speed up the loading time... and it didn't crash when I went outside... but everything is still BLACK... again, what would the recommended graphics settings be for a Geforce 240 GT like mine?

Are you running the game in XP compatibility mode? If not, that may help since NWN 2 is a 32bit game.

Looking back at your screenshot, I noted that you are running some custom content in your override folder. I would suggest this:

Rename your Neverwinter Nights 2 (call it NWN2) folder in your Documents folder, then start a new game, create a new character, play through the scene at home, then go outside and see what happens.

Renaming the the Neverwinter nights 2 folder will cause the game to create a new one and will verify whether or not the problem is being caused by any custom content ot settings you are using. If the problem clears up, then it may have something to do with content or settings used.

Ummm... that's not MY screenshot... that's someone ELSE with a different issue... Anyhow... ran it in win xp service pack 2 compatibility mode... disabled desktop theme, etc... Still CTD's when I exit to an "outdoor" area in multi-core mode... and now it's doing it in single core affinity... must be some graphics setting that my card doesn't support doing it... again, I have everything set to high, max AA, etc... any suggestions there?

Try turning AA down to 4

Ok, I turned AA completely *off* and it still does it. Again... somehow, when I go outside, the screen resolution wants to change while it's loading... and I'm pretty sure it's this behavior that's making it funky... what resolution SHOULD I be running NWN 2 at?

The native resolution setting for your monitor should be your default.

Make sure the NWN2.ini file in Documents\\\\Never Winter Nights 2 folder is not write protected, and that the display option resultion settings are correct for your monitor. Here's an example of the settings or my system to give you an idea of what to look for in your nwn2.ini file:

[Display Options]
FullScreen=1
Width=1920
Height=1080

I have been experiencing a similar graphics problem which has resulted (temporarily) in giving up playing NWN2. Updated the drivers yesterday, somewhat unsurprisingly I have an NVidia card. Sad thing is I bought this computer to allow me to play NWN2.

My issue is that outside everything looks bright white, almost as if it is half way through the flash phase of a nuclear bomb.

It would appear the update has resolved my problem, although W7 would not detect the new driver for me - I'd to go to the NVidia site & download the latest manually. Happy Days.Posted Image

Apparently, this is why the game keeps crashing to my desktop... according to the error log, anyways...

Error occurred at 8/22/2010 09:46:52.

E:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\nwn2main.exe, run by Zanzibar.

E:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\nwn2main.exe caused an Access Violation exception in module nwn2main.exe at 0023:004901b4.

Write to location 00000000 caused an access violation.

Any clue how to get it to NOT do that?? lol...

Microsoft never has truly "recent" drivers, so that no version of Windows can update drivers particularly well.  Game players should always be going directly to the source for either the latest updates, or the old archives when it's one of their older cards that you must use old drivers for.

Zanzibar, if your issue isn't resolved by a reinstall it is very likely to be an hardware issue.

Windows 7 does an outstanding job terminating programs before a BSOD occurs. It makes it a little more difficult to know that it is hardware related, but it definitely is better for the system.

Don't really see how a brand new, Geforce 240 GT could have a hardware issue here... and this is the ONLY game that I have that it does this on :(
