Flemeth is also WAY to powerful to be a companion. It would be weird if one minute she can kill whole armies singlehandedly and turn into dragons and when she joins shes lvl3 and can cast only 3 basic spells.

I think she'll be like Elminster in BG. Every once in a while she'll show up and give Hawke vague clues in her riddlespeak about what to do next.

It will certainly be fun when the people start filling in. I betting they will be interactive, taking you to a mini-bio.

I would like if the characters joined after some kind of quest or getting to know them event, im not saying the full Mass Effect 2 experience, but more than bumping into them down the pub and them insisting that they come along...bit too much of that in the first game.

Well, Morrigan (I think) mentioned how if the vessel that Flemeth is in isn't up to her power, it takes her time to "settle in". This could explain her as a party member; with every level up, she becomes more acquanted with her new body.

This is assuming that she is a party member at all; she could just be a reoccuring figure like you said.

ON ANOTHER TOPIC: Random idea! What if Flemeth possessed Wynn? I was just thinking about the new Flemeth screenshots, and her new look. Plus, Wynn says she was being kept alive by a spirit, right?

Ok, I forget how Wynn described it exactly, but is it possible?

I'm actually hoping there are less companions. Large casts draw away focus, and I prefer a smaller paty of well-developed characters each integral to the story, versus a throw-away and irrelevant group.

She's sort of already possessed. In fact, when she confronts the Desire Demon she mentions that's what she's protected from it.

I'm looking forward to being able to kill or force my companions away from me (except for the few I actually like) I felt like I couldn't do that in Origins because the grey wardens needed all the help they could get and it doesn't seem like a good idea to go after the arch demon, cutting through the horde in the process, with just Alistair

Ok two of each class is fine for me it makes 6 companions , but still there will be ( I think ) "companions" like Mabari / Golem. So that make even more companions. I would like to have werewolf or vampire in team :)

Not only that, but a smaller cast allows for a deeper relationship and, simply put, more dialogue. What is the point of a dozen characters when they start to say "can it wait? I'm in the middle of some calibrations" after just two brief conversations.
On the other hand, a smaller cast might be bad if you are forced to take a companion along that you don't like around. Well, just think in Awakening terms - stuck with Oghren as the only warrior option for quite some time isn't that awesome.

Its been confirmed that there will be at least 2 companions for each of the three classes. Add in a couple "special" companion (like Shale and Barkspawn from DAO) types, and I think you have a good number.

Even though Flemeth could technically be in a new body with a new power level, the screenshots we've seen have her as a dragon crushing darkspawn with ease. Of course, Varric is apparently an unreliable narrator. But still, I would think she would be way too powerful to be in the party.

I actually thing that a lot of companions could work for this game (twelve or maybe a little more) because it stretches over such a long time. You wouldn't have to have all of them with you at once and they could come and go as the story dictates. Then again, we may have them with us the whole time. My first instinct, admittedly, is to want more companions, but that could be bad if they lose depth. But if the writing team can handle it, it would be pretty cool. We don't know anything for sure, but the silhouettes on the DA2 main page suggest eighteen (I think) characters. I doubt they're all companions though.
